Hi.
First message. I am really new at this staff, I mean DIY speakers, so I am flying hard in the net for information. Until the moment, Troels web page is the most informative detailed and illustrated page i find about the subject. It seems almost easy. But like I said, I just started.

I would just like to endorse all the positive comments made by various contributors about Troels. I have found him to be very helpful and forthcoming with both advice and encouragement whenever I have emailed him. He is also very prompt with his replies. More important however is the fact that he does not go in for bulls**t and go overboard on what his designs are capable of achieving, he leaves people to find out for themselves. The huge number of contributors to his Builders Page is testament to how much so many people value his contribution to the diy loudspeaker arena.

Hi folks
Sorry, the Eekels Mini was deteled by accident, calling a new project the same name. The Eekels mini is back.
With regard to my affiliation with Jantzen Audio you can read above what it is, or go to the bottom of my intro page.
And you can thank a number of vulture dealers in New Zealand, Australia, Spain and Eastern Europe for not showing the crossover components' values any more. These guys have no respect for copyright laws and nick designs, images, etc., for their own personal profit. They should make their own designs and launch their own products. I'm not spending e.g. 100 workshop hours on an DISC4 project to feed these guys:
DISC-4
With regard to the use of expensive crossover components, I use these things because they sound better. Not a lot, but better. It's no secret we pay dearly for small increments in sound quality.
best regards
Troels Gravesen
And please identify yourself before you speak out!
Just want to say thanks for sharing your efforts.
I think he should charge.
It takes a tremendous amount of time, knowledge, and experience to put something together that is musical.
Most ding dongs can take expensive drivers and use a crossover program.
But that gets them in the ballpark, it can sound so much better.
A true diy "can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear."
I respect someone who can get 90% of the sound for 10% of the cost.
Don't get me wrong, I am all for expensive caps and such, but that is a category where costs far outstrip value, but better is better regardless.
Thank you, all, for input and chiming in with priceless advice.
Most of diy projects are tough to sell and have less resale value compared to a name brand speaker.

Troels has done a lot for the DIY community and I don't intend to analyze him too deeply- if he's mislead anyone to personal benefit, shame on him, but that's not the impression I'm left with. I like that he went to work on the great drivers in the JBL L100.
Pfft, I reckon Zaph is the 'best crossover guy' on the net. No in-depth non-linear distortion and power handling consideration no care 😉.I loved this guy like a brother. The best crossover guy on the net.
I still support Troels with his commerical ventures - if his site is his primary job then good for him! Too many people want something for nothing these days.
Plenty of us can read between the lines of audiophool grade capacitors and such anyway - there is still interesting info on his site for people of any knowledge level.

Maybe he is just trying to do both - commercial kits designed for Jantzen and his DIY stuff. If designing some commercial speaker kits will help to fund his DIY projects then i'll be only happy. Also some people are better off using kits. This way at least a buyer will get predictable results on crossover side. Too often inexperienced people assemble Troels designs using junk components to save $ or simply use what available locally end up with comments like "i built it, but it sounded bright and thin" while other say "are you kidding? It's too dark and bass heavy".
I once built Zaph SB12.3 this way and it made my ears bleed while measuring perfectly until 3 years later i had just about every component used originally in the kit left from other projects so i remade the crossovers close to the original just to discover a very different speakers which i liked this time. Both measured the same but sounded very different.

Y'see, that's not my experience at all. I've tried different components back to back (poly vs electrolytic) and there was no notable measureable or audible difference.Too often inexperienced people assemble Troels designs using junk components to save $ or simply use what available locally end up with comments like "i built it, but it sounded bright and thin" while other say "are you kidding? In certain positions, different types of capacitors can affect the levels due to their ESR, but if you design for it then it makes no difference at it's only linear distortion. Be aware, that even a 0.5dB difference in the leve of one driver, while most people would declare it as 'measuring the same' certainly is audible if it spans a large frequency range. It's inevitable that some tweaking is required even for a good design in that respect.
Using a cheap capacitor that has a terrible tolerance (+/-20%) in a position where the value is critical, like a zobel can also have disasterous effects. The solution for that is simple - just get a bunch of them and measure until you find the one with the right value for the design, or 'trim' it into spec by adding a smaller capacitor along side.

Bah, tin-ear. 😀
Actually I've heard this effect depending on the internal cabling + amplifier, particularly the amplifier.
The more components (or few mediocre components in a low-component count amplifier), generally the more audible the crossover.
To me (by far) the worst culprit isn't capacitors or inductors, it's resistors. If possible, best to just use inductors with the resistance that's required and "skip" the resistor.
I don't see why Troels should not charge for his work! In any case good luck to finding a well-documented build like his on the internet. Audio is an expensive hobby and one cannot be expected to buy/obtain all these drivers, components and not at least cost-neutral.
I really think the diy audio community has a debt of gratitude to people who choose to share their audio endeavors, never mind doing well for years, on a nicely designed and organized site.
The kind of knowledge and experience available in this community is simply awe inspiring and we mustn't take it for granted. The continued availability of freely given knowledge comes with no guarantees.
Troels projects are inspiring. I think some respect and gratitude is due.

Actually, the title of this thread is defamatory. It should be changed or removed.
Agreed.
Barry.
I had the pleasure of building one of Troels' designs, though embarrassingly I never got round to sharing it on his website, though it is on here (now no longer in the line-up of Scan-Speak designs). Couldn't have been more thankful to him for sharing an excellent design which adorns my living room and still surprises people with the amount of bass extension a 6.5" driver can give.
I agree with the comments about him selling his work and there is a great balance he has struck with very detailed cabinet construction, then making it easy for the cross-overs and drivers by offering them as a package. Its much better documented than the likes of Wilmslow Audio and thus provides me with a lot more confidence in choosing one of this constructions.
And once again I am amazed at the people and knowledge contained within this forum and that the likes of Troels, Nelson Pass and Tom Danley all frequent it. There aren't many other forums like this and we should definitely treasure it and the people that help all of us to take our audio experience to the next level. So a big thank you from me to everyone here.

I'd love to hear the seas a26, the psydo dynaco a25 thing.
I've heard it used as a midrange driver and it was very nice indeed. Expensive, but nice.

I have a pair of TQWT mkII and TJL-2W speakers that a local DIY guy gave to me for free (I have no clue why, but it was an incredibly kind gesture!).
I can say that they are incredible sounding speakers!
I have to finish the TQWT's, though.
I have always liked Troels' website and designs. Now I have some and can say that he is an awesome speaker designer. 🙂
Thanks for your DIY work!!!

The fact that phools are stealing his plans shows how great he has become. Sadly not showing the values of his xover will not stop such low lifes, all they will do is buy one and copy, this is the sad reality of the human condition. we all say sorry TG.
I think having so many big speaker with exotic drivers i doubt Troels is really interested in designing "another budget 2 way" out of his own curiosity. Maybe without some commercial interest from Jantzen some of those designs would never have been born as they are unlikely interesting from "pushing boundaries of sound quality" point of view.
It's normal if some company order a design from him which he'd probably never do otherwise. I remember reading somewhere that about 70% or more of the kits that sell are low to medium priced 2 ways...
So untill the day we see DTQWT or ATS or Ekta crossover values hidden - i wouldn't worry 🙂
