Troels Gravesen sells out. Somebody should discuss this, IMO.

I wholeheartedly join the coalition supporting Troels and his efforts. I have yet to find a website that comes close to the amount of information and designs Troels offers, free of charge. It affords DIYers of all backgrounds and levels of knowledge and know-how an opportunity to learn and to build. Just looking at the list of people who have built his designs, knowing this is only a small percentage of the total, shows the popularity of his designs.

I’ve recently had the opportunity to have a short email exchange with Troels and found him to be kind, courteous and informative. The title of this thread does strike me as unfair and uninformed as well as lacking any form of gratitude for all Troels has done for the community. We've been down this road before, with other respected designers, and have managed to lose them within the forum and/or have curbed their enthusiasm for sharing designs outside it.

Besides being critical where it’s warranted, let’s praise and thank people like Troels for all they’ve shared with us over the years. I look forward to his OBL update this year, if Troels chooses to not publish the component values, I’ll happily purchase a kit from Jantzen in the hope he receives his fair share of the funds.

I have to chime in also.

I own a business and I charge what I charge for a number of reasons. Demand obviously, but also my skill. Skill can also include your ability to do a job/service etc, but it also includes my inventory both of materials and equipment.

I do on-site paint repair for car dealers. The car dealers have a number of reconditioning services performed. But my service is the most expensive but also the most in demand.

So, while I have completely enjoyed the published xover designs Troels has provided, and built the Nomex 164 myself a few years back, I have to agree Troels deserves to be compensated.

In fact while I was building the Nomex's I asked Troels a number of questions, and made some modest donations to offer a small thanks.

It is a shame that his newest designs are not published, but he still has dozens which are!

The fact is, what compensation he is getting from Jentzen couldn't be more than a few hundred dollars per kit IF THAT MUCH. (My guess would be it's probably insulting what if anything they pay him, they are after all providing him with the xover components as it is! They are one of his sponsors.) And that is IF those kits sell...and that is a big IF!

When somebody doesn't want to pay me to do a job they have one option!

Go somewhere ELSE!

So Troels keep up the good work and get what EVER COMPENSATION YOU CAN for that hard work ,skill and inventory!

P.S. Troels...this is Dana From Florida!

Let's be clear. I am Troels' number one fan. The great all-rounder of speakers old and new. 😀

His free website is a huge asset to the diy speaker community. No-one gives away useful practical information like Troels. And I don't think I have appeared disrespectful of his knowledge and contribution at any point. But I suppose, due to a misunderstanding, I did RANT a bit about increasing lack of detail.

In fact some of you guys could learn a thing or two from Troels. You are so secretive! Ask yourselves why. 😉

In the old days, Troels would have been appointed by some Rich Patron as "Speaker Lauriate", been given a secure income for life like Leonhard Euler, and been left to just do what he does best.

As it is, he has to walk some middle-line between keeping body and soul together and pursuing the art. Ah well. 😱

😱
Does He??
I mean no disrespect. He is prolific and has about no competition in DIY world if it comes to variety of designs but is there anything specific about his work which makes his speakers stand out? Something different from what I can go and buy in the store for more or less money or better buy second hand for 1/4 of initial price? Any vision of sound at all?
He may be the nicest of guys (I'm sure he is) but if there is a single example of senseless DIY activity -no aim , no direction ,no reference points except maybe some technical specifics of the craft that would be Troels.
Isn't there enough boring speakers around that you have to clone and multiply them?

The thing about Troel's designs is, even if they aren't, audio world altering, that they are designs that one can use to build a good sounding speaker that you can say you did yourself..rather than buy from any of the manufacturers that market similar appearing speakers.

I think his designs show us how to put together a speaker that is much better in quality and finish than commercially available from companies that are available at franchise audio stores.

His designs as well as Curts Speaker design works show us how to build something similar to speakers I know are definitely way out of my price range for something a bit more affordable.

I'm happy with Troels website and understand his reasons. When he stops sharing, it would be really a shame.

Learned a lot more and still learning because of his website.
That speaks also for others who give the DIY community projects and testing drivers by their websites.

Soon of later it`s going to be same for Göran.

I'll try to hang on for a while longer, but publishing new designs are more time consuming and costs a lot more than many people realize!

There is so much fun to do, but so little time to do it. 🙂

Perfectly logical to charge an amount for a kit like NEXT4,
being very similar to a commercially available Wilson's
Alexia. For US and Canada only, the kit price excl.VAT
is US$ 3.603,00 + shipping. Add additional costs for importing
and timber, not that expensive considering the regular price
for Alexia being over 40 grand.
