Do we think it involves distributed mode radiation necessarily?
I don´t think we have a well-defined principle. What the inventor himself writes in his patent is probably wrong. If any movement produces a positive pressure wave there wold be strong distortion.
But we have a well-defined argument against the proper function of a non-vibrating pivoting speaker: acoustic short circuit.
No matter whether the star changes to pistonic or bending wave operation mode at 5kHz, it lies almost 20dB above the pivoting mode in sensitivity. My conclusion about the practicability of the concept stands.
Good work el'OL.
It seems that every experiment and test have led to the same conclusion - this principle of sound reproduction is questionable. Further more, we STILL don't know how it reproduces sound and the inventor refuses to acknowledge this one fact which does not threaten his patent or any other paranoia.
We still await the ''breaking news '' from the inventor or some authorized reviewer(for god's sake - anyone with some credibility and qualification!) who will prove that it works well enough to sound like high fidelity and not require a billion watts to be loud enough🙄

When I touch the tripod that holds the device I feel a strong vibration, so it may be possible that this is the main source of the output below 5kHz. The output above could be quasi-pistonic as it its wavelength is small enough to escape the acoustic short circuit. Diameter of the star is 104 mm.

I'm not sure the inventor is claiming he knows how the sound is produced: he is only claiming that sound is produced, and that it sounds good 😉
Assuming a perfectly aligned and frictionless mechanism, i.e. with no unwanted vibrations from the support etc. it is hard to believe that the device would make no noise at all (due to pressure cancellation). It would be nice to understand the physical process giving rise to the sound, but in the end that is of minor importance to the majority of folks if the device sounds good.
What would be welcome is some blueprints, or a simple kit, that enabled us to build a good working device.
As a result of reading planot's posts on the first page of this thread, and the conversations between him and regular members of this forum, I couldn't help but continue to read the rest of this thread with great interest. Interested, because.. I've made several observations within this thread that have led me to believe there's a good possibility I might know who this guy is. If it's who I think it is, trust me.. it's definitely "vaporware". And if it's him, but ends up not being "vaporware" in the strict sense, the "invention" is still likely to suck balls. ..Just going by his past mistakes.
It's kind of sad, really. Since talking to this guy years back (if it's him), I've met several other people just like him. They've actually convinced themselves they're great intelligent inventors of some sort, when in reality, they're nothing more than sick twisted deceiving individuals, willing to go to unbelievably great lengths to obtain a dollar and some self-satisfaction. Simply put, they're habitual liers. All they ever do is lie, and others usually figure it out sooner or later. When that happens, they look elsewhere, and the cycle continues, often until the day they die.
If it is indeed you, John, coming to this forum was only another big mistake. There's far too many knowledgeable here. Certainly the wrong place for an individual looking to make a quick buck from uninformed car audio kids.
Like I said, I could easily be wrong though.
Either way, I think the whole planot thing is ********. 🙂

Agreed. However, I'm not so sure the motivation stems from dollars as much as it does from creating a false image for one's self, most likely as a result of being severely insecure with themselves. They search for and thrive off of gullible people who are willing to believe their BS. Once they've obtained a small cult of gullible believers who worship them, they'll sit back and spend all their time there, bathing in it (in this case, perhaps planot's future forum on his own website, which he already spoke of himself). I'll never fully understand it, because I'm not one of them. REALLY strange behavior though, often times seemingly without any reward, as it doesn't make sense at first glance and makes you wonder why someone would go through such trouble and do the things they do. It's odd. I've known far too many of them in person though, and even fallen victim to a couple of them. Never again though. I see straight though them anymore. Been screwed over too many times in the past not to learn a great deal from those kinds of mistakes.
And stop trying to copy the "invention". He likes that.

There are free energy guys like Steorn that have gone on much longer than this, there is always a critical mass of people that hates the status quo, it has an unacceptible boring finality to them.

I do not know this person (BHTX) is. He has chosen to block direct e-mail on this forum so I can not e-mail him directly.
I can not imagine who he is but he is definitely off the deep end since he does NOT "know" me.
"If" he has met me once then that _may_ be the extent of his "knowing" me. I must say that his statements definitely are straddling the line.
If this forum were policed properly then trolls like BHTX would not be allowed to post.

Well..........hello'' PLANOT''.
You make a point of posting that BHTX has blocked emails so that he can not be emailed directly.
May I remind you that you have done that ALSO.
I love how you emerge from the ''black lagoon'' when your credibility🙄 is on the line, yet you refuse to post or provide the members of this forum any information or answers to our honest interest and curiosity to the workings of your ''invention''.
I take no sides in this latest or alleged information provided by BHTX, but if you post here, post for the benefit of others or don't post at all.

I never said I knew planot.
I never even said I knew who he was.
I simply stated "I might know who this guy is", and noted several times that it was only a possibility.
I'm not a troll, that's obvious. I won't even waste my time attempting to defend myself from it, as that would be pointless, because it's such a ridiculous statement.
How dare you attempt to insult this forum once again, specifically its moderators, especially after replying to one of them the way you have. You obviously haven't the slightest clue about this place and where you stand. This forum is moderated fairly heavily, and they do an exceptional job at it (most of the time). As a result, there's a large hand full of respected members on this forum, legendary experts in this field whose names are often well-known throughout the world, who have become regular members over the years, genuinely sharing a great wealth of knowledge with this community, simply because they can, and because they want to. The vast majority of members here are generally good people, here to share valuable information, contribute to the community, or seek help during their endeavors in this interesting hobby. Although it may or may not be like it once was, this forum still possesses a strong sense of moderation with an unusual amount of decency, almost like somewhat of a conformity to a recognized standard of propriety, filled with an endless amount of great knowledge, with a strong dedication and generosity that can't be found anywhere else. There's no other place on the internet quite like it. As with your case, those who don't fit this criteria are usually identified as such fairly quickly because of these things, and they come and go. It doesn't matter who you are, what you know, your number of accomplishments, etc.. there's information to be found and shared for anyone who comes here. Aside from the most common forum rules, I think the only requirement is that you at least portray yourself as being a decent individual, and be willing to provide others with a certain level of respect. Regardless of what anyone thinks they know or what they've accomplished, no one is 'above' anyone here, although even a portion of regulars still want to believe they are, and I think it tends to stand out like a sore thumb, because that kind of **** simiply doesn't fly around here and people don't like it, at least I certainly don't. We're all similar human beings with a common interest. Yes, this is all common sense, or at least it should be.
My point is that you've done absolutely nothing to contribute to this thread, or to yourself. Rather, you only seem to want to cause problems. You've done a huge disservice to yourself by coming here and acting the way you have. If you really are genuine, the person you claim to be, and by some very slim chance this "invention" of yours is truly legit.. then you seem to be going about it in all the wrong ways, making every mistake possible. Not only that, but you've also made a big mistake in choosing to miss out on what this forum has to offer you. You really ought to stop doing what you're doing.. quit sitting there staring at Google Analytics and searching to find who's talking about you so you can show up and screw yourself over once again, and get your **** together. At the very least, I'd be banging my head against my desk if I were you right now. If you're this bad at things, you really should have considered only handling the design of your "invention", and left the rest of the process up to others who are more qualified. You've already proven yourself completely incapable of so many things required of you. To top it all off, you can't even communicate with people.. on the internet! Sad, sad, sad..
And to think.. if you are who you say you are, you're a 60 year old man! Fooled me!! I never would have guessed. I'd be considered fairly young by the majority around these parts. However, I could have done a much better job at handling things in your shoes and communicating with people at the age of 10. I'm astounded by your level of incompetence.
Regardless, if by a slim chance this is all true and legitimate, I still wish you great luck in succeeding.
As SY would say, who cares? There's nothing to see here. Move along, move along..
Bye. 🙂

tresch said:I only live 2 hours away from Omaha. I'd love to go listen to one of the prototypes, just out of curiosity! I wonder if he would be down with giving a demo? 🙂
Close to Des Moines?
There really are only a few ways to find out how well the prototypes work.
1) Listen to a high quality recording of the speaker. Could be music or sweep tones. Any sound card with a decent $100 microphone should do.
2) Travel to Omaha and have a listen first hand.
3) See Zaph type specs of THD, frequency response, etc.
But before I did #2, I'd like to have a listen to #1 to see if its worth the trip.
I've talked to John over the phone and he was going to have his "P4" demo by April-May this year. On his website, he invites people to contact him for an audition.
I believe all the reviewers referred to on his website's "testimonials" section listened to a single speaker. I'd only be interested in listening to a stereo pair of speakers.
The problem here is that to be interesting they'd have to be better than than the "Bohlender Graebener RD40 Planar Transducer" for around $1000. ( http://www.parts-express.com/pe/sho...706&vReviewShow=1&vReviewRand=2148849#reviews )
The planar transducer you speak of has absolutely nothing to do with the PLANOT
completely different operation principle except we know that the planar transducer is real and works.

el`Ol said:I guess he wanted to say that he sees the BG as the reference in its price class.
Exactly right. The omnidirectional nature of the Planot would most likely attract comparisons to planar speakers. The BG RD40 has usable frequency response from 500hz to 15Khz. As such it makes a wonderful midrange.
Another planar is the Magnepan -- http://www.magnepan.com/model_MMG but that's not DIY. It does, however, operate at lower frequencies.
Both have been around a while and sound good for under $1000.
And Newform Research may still sell raw drivers.
tresch said:right IN Des Moines, actually
I'm going to wait for John to come forward with good news on his P4 prototype being up and running. If I heard that he had a stereo pair working well, I might be inclined to drive up and have a listen.
But as a practical matter... even if we listened to them and thought they were really good getting the plans and building them to John's specs would likely cost more than $1000. And for that money there are many proven options.
In a conversation with John about 3 months ago it seemed he was more interested in licensing to a manufacturing company rather than to individual hobbyists. So from a DIY perspective, its probably a dead end.
Planot Speaker update from the inventor ...
Planot(R) speaker update...
The US Patent and Trademark Office awarded me a patent for my diaphragm design in December of 2010. # 7860265
I have been talking with many manufacturers but I can not yet announce a product on the market. The May issue of Voice Coil Magazine featured the Planot speaker in a cover article. That article resulted in more manufacturer contacts. Voice Coil editor Vance Dickson has agreed to review a prototype when I have one ready to ship.
A press release in 6moons.com has boosted monthly traffic on my Web site by thousands of visits. 6moons's , Srajam Ebaen, has agreed to review a Planot prototype, as soon as I have review units available. I have posted Google Analytics traffic data on my site.
People have been requesting I publish measurements for some time. I have now published frequency and phase measurements on my Web site.
Again, if you are interested in speakers utilizing Planot technology contact manufacturers and tell them, you encourage them to investigate licensing Planot technology.
I am working with companies to produce a supply of voice coils and magnets and I will be making new motors based on a proprietary design. The motor contributes a significant amount to response and efficiency.
