J74BL only left few hundred and only sell in quad. Price is $6 for 4 pcs with Idss within 0.2mA.
Got about 100 J74V NOS, lead a bit dirty. Sorted into 0.5mA Idss range. $1 each.

Thanks for getting back to me. The design calls for 4-6mA jfets. What would be the effect of 6.8mA Idss? More gain? Would this potentially unbalance the whole circuit? I am building Mads K Hoaas's Atlantis RIAA.

Can you post the circuit here so that others can help? Most likely the bias source resistor need to be changed to higher value for high Idss jfet.
I'd rather not go there, as I'm not an EE. I wanted a design that was tried and tested and highly regarded, so I don't want to go tinkering. Many thanks though, Lucas

Lucas, if the Idss of K170 is 4mA, how can there be 5mA flowing down the jfet path??
I think the jfets Idss should be at about 6mA as there is a 10R source resistor to give you about -0.05V bias (or -1mA less from Idss).
In conclusion, there is an error on the Idss specification in the circuit. On the other hand, I do not see a big issue to use 6.8mA jfets as the source resistor can be increase to get 5mA current flow at the jfets.

Another comment is that the gain of the circuit will be smaller if the source resistor is increased. Thus it should not be too high say below 15 ohm.
