TL Design I can't build

I'm not sure if I made it clear that the cardboard is sealing the tee from the pipe, not covering the crossover. I'm giving the crossover a platform to sit on that keeps it out of the line and out of sight at the same time.

Does that make sense? Or are we talking past each other?

...wouldn't it be neat if the tweeter was mounted on the end of one of the caterpillar's 'antennae'? i suppose you could have two tweeters, but i guess that's just not done.

Each "caterpillar" could have two tweeters-just don't hook one up. Depends if you want to spend an extra $35 or so for purely cosmetic reasons.

A slightly cheaper alternative would be to have two antennae, or eyes, (a tweeter looks a little like an eye), made of 2" PVC pipe. At the end of one is a tweeter. At the end of the other is a piece of wood or plastic, painted to resemble a tweeter. A piece of foam or clay, painted black, would make a nice imitation dome.

As a linguist, a far greater percentage of your friends are likely to be etymologists than entomologists, so you should be able to slide by with it. 😉

Nicely done, as WFB would say, nicely done. And on a couple of levels, too. 😉

A "fake" tweeter has already been constructed. It's covered with green cloth, with a hole the size of the Vifa tweeter's dome. An identical piece of cloth has been cut to cover the tweeter with a hole for the dome. THAT'S why I was asking about the tweeter placement.

And a yellow outline to match the one in the book.

Now BE PATIENT so that there's a measure of surprise left for the coming weekend unveiling.

I guess I didn't catch the fact that you intended to use the cardboard as the platform for the cross over. I guess I would of just mounted the cross over on the inner surface of the endcap, but now that you have the platform in there it makes sense to use it.

This was literally a square peg in a round hole problem. I didn't want to take the components off the PCB I have, and this was the best solution I could think of. I also read on this forum that a crossover should be outside the line (search "solder" and you'll find that thread eventually). So this solution kills two birds with one stone.

There's just one LITTLE thing left to solve. What should I use as a non-permanent mount for the driver? I have some gasket material to put around the end of the tee on which the driver will mount.

What should I use to adhere the driver to the gasket? Non-permanent?

The quick advice I can give here is: don't ever use a product containing silicone if you want anything else to ever adhere to the surface.

I talked to the PC7 people a few years ago, and that is what they told me. Silicone products do stick by themselves for awhile, but if you want greater adhesion and want to switch to a non-silicone product, forget it. Nothing sticks to silicone except another silicone product. The surface is essentially ruined for anything else.

They said this is not only true for their adhesives, but pretty much anything else they have researched, whether it is their product or not.

They allowed that it might be possible to sand the surface down enough to go underneath the level of silicone, which might allow another product to be used. However, they did not vouch even for this in practice.

knock test

The spirals are together, but still naked. I did a knock test. Here's what you will hear: three knocks each on four different sections of the spiral.

The first two are middle segments, the other two are either end segment.

Would you like to critique the sound?

Signal chain=Studio Projects C1 mic-->Mackie 1202 VLZ mixer-->Delta 44 sound card-->SONAR 2 XL-->Wav output-->Windows Media Audio format.

That's right, it's windows media stuff.

Thanks,

Dave

It's too dark to take pictures

Anyway, I wanted to have a nice write-up, and it's too late in the evening to take decent pictures or write a nice summary of the work.

Making 6-inch PVC pipe into caterpillars...go figure. At any rate, I'm almost done. I'll post a definite due date shortly.

Thought I'd tease ya a little...more to keep you posted than that, tho. They've turned into an interpretation of the very hungry caterpillar. You'll see what I mean.

I'm getting into the fatherhood groove, too. That's what's been taking so long...
