If you've got alot of deer around (we do) don't plan on having much in the way of shrubbery left after the winter passes. This past year, they ate ANYTHING they could reach, up to ~ 8 feet high in our yard. Rhododendron, Knockout roses, arborvitae, trumpet vine, hemlock, raspberry canes, pine needles, bamboo, anything with a hint of green got devoured here.
So, as much as I'm an animal lover, bambi chili does get served fairly routinely as I recuperate. And the deer and turkey are not the least bit shy here, inspite of being hunted ruthlessly. There are more of them than us, it seems...
You're not too far up river from us here in Ashland

we also have too many deer around here. I forgot to close the gate around the pool and vegie garden. The deer came in and cleaned out the garden. Just about everyone in the neighbourhood has had a car collision with a deer. My car has been hit by a deer while I was stopped waiting for another deer to make up its mind weather to cross the road or not. The deer that hit me came running out of the bush and just ran into the car, then ran back to the bush.
Richard it is nice to see the souls of those who have a connection with nature also hang out here.
Long before I knew it was unusual, I used to walk the yard and approach birds on low lying branches. Quite often they were happy to jump onto my hand and go for a little walk. I would take them to my parents or brother or neighbours as a present but they flew away in the presence of others. To this day I find it amazing that because neither the birds nor I knew it was strange, we were both content.
All animals/birds know your presence and check you out for threat level.
I was in the most southern tip of Australia many years ago... a rain forest actually.
Not many people ever go there. So the birds and animals are not afraid... have not been killed and thus no reason to be afraid. Just curious.

I have learned what to plant and what not to plant.... in the late summer, when food is hard to find, they will eat Anything.
One of the many means to an end -- communicating with the deer --- is to observe them closely..... notice the wide eye spacing... to the sides of the head? They can not see straight ahead. When startled, they will just panic and dash away in any direction and hit things. I noticed this and that they would turn their head slightly to the side to see me.
I used this observation to be able to touch them...... when I was able to be that close to them. another story.... they are more sensitive to detecting motion and cant seem to see you if you sit still.... (but they can smell you). I touched them between the ears from straight between the eyes and they never saw my hand coming.... it startled them at first and they would jump.
Another detail (of which there are many) is that you have to bring your hand slowly from below then up to them.... not from above down to them...... predators come at them from above. At first, I put myself below them..... non threatning position.
It was long slow learning process to gain trust with these wild animals... who can easy kick the sh*t out of you.

Here and in Florida the term feral cat refers to a non domesticated house cat. From Wikipedia:
A feral cat is a domesticated cat that has returned to the wild, or the descendants of such an animal. It is distinguished from a stray cat, which is a pet cat that has been lost or abandoned, while feral cats have never been socialized.
One of the neighbors snapped a picture of the albino deer before it became someone's trophy.
There are too many deer here too. I have had near misses with deer while driving. They will freeze near the edge of the road when they hear a car coming, then run wildly in any direction when the car gets close. Often this is right in front of the car, or right into its side.
Most people protect their vegetable gardens with electric fences. Zappers aren't permitted in town and the deer will raid trash, so I use a paintball gun. There was a multicolored doe around the house here for a while. I guess it found a better neighborhood to raid.

That makes sense. The times I have been able to get close, I was covered in creek mud which has a odor all its own. Of course while wading in the mud and digging up Knotweed roots, I am not carrying my camera phone (or anything else). They can hear better than humans, me at least. A barking dog or a gunshot from the shooting range a mile away will cause an instant bolt.

There have been several videos on Youtube where a panicked deer trashes a trailer.....or a bus.

Next door neighbor contracted lyme disease -- the tick is harbored in the skin of deer (and other rodents) -- she was in pretty bad shape for almost a year. Same w a friend of my son.
Deer don't eat tree peonies.
The deer repellent sold by Bayer works pretty well, if you remember to use it every week.

Deer have a built-in birth control..... when food is plentiful, they will give birth to two. When the food is in short supply, they have one or none.... like in a drought year.
So, in places where the grass is green and plenty of it.... you will have more and more deer until they over populate the food supply then mother nature takes control and some die and others reproduce few. The population is regulated based on the food supply.

Wild cats, deer, mouses, moose, crows, hummingbirds, eagles, herons, swans, scavengers, hawks, loons, howls, spiders, bobcats, cougars, raccoon, ants, mosquito, grizzlies, brown, cinnamon, black bears, berries, plums, apples, grapes, and about a hundred more species of birds, and wildlife animals and all type of others like sheep, cows, horses, pigs, chickens, roosters, squirrels, pigeons, dogs, cats, ...are all part of my retirement time. ...Better understanding between I and all of them; we are living all together in better harmony.
The human species enjoy retirement almost as much as the wildlife species...
Wildlife just don't have martinis, pina coladas, cold ones, front porches (they got trees and lakes...), long chairs to relax in. ...Or hammocks.

I intend to live forever........
You will !
We all will !
But not forever in this body!
You will still be 'you' without the physical part ! 🙂
This is getting spooky ... 😉
Ha.....ha...😀
Wouldn't it be great just floating around ?
Maybe 'spook' a few people too !
Halloween would be a really enjoyable day !! 😀
Take it from someone who almost didn't... enjoy what you have while you have it.

Does getting head on by a Mazda MX6 while riding a bicycle count as a "near death experience"?
(relative velocity ~ 45mph)

anybody who has had surgery has experienced death. You get knocked out at lets say 8AM, wake up several hours later in a somewhat grogy state only to see your sister and wife hovering over you. You think This can't be heaven it must mean I am back in hell.
press the pain pump a few times and pass out again ahh! sweet morphine

I applied for the no1 position, but they felt I still lacked some rounds around the track. (I do check my topcoat for bugs twice a day)

Got head on my 72 vega back in '75, after local shop replaced valve guides, only to discover they left out some internal parts. Consequences... rings seized and engine dead. What a POS that vehicle was!
