This is not just another gainclone

I've heard that one LED in particular can cause bad sound. It's a favourite of nightclub DJs who prefer it to flash on and off and call it the "clip" light.
I have also trouble with LED's which caused bad sound but an UV LED is the solution for me, besides I get also a tan. Also blue-green LED works fine for me.

I have used IR LED's also but I like the UV ones better. The UV LED's add a forth dimension to the sound.

As far as a "clip LED" IMHO anything that causes an alternating on-off load either to the amp or the speakers has to , in some way, affect the overall sound quality. All my designs are as simple and un complicated as i can get them.

Seasonal boxes

If you have Peter Daniel’s box making/ craftwork skills, ignore:

I have zero metalwork experience, but am soon to build two ‘gainclones’ (one 3886, one TDA 7293).

With Christmas here, the number of tins for lollies, chocaltes, coffee, biscuits etc is about 5+ times normal. Here in Oz, I found a great range at K-Mart. I got a large one for the PS, and a small one for the amp.
Only 15 shopping days to go . .

Anyone else done this? Strike any problems??

Cheers

Is a change from Panasonic FC to BG FK a good value?

I would guess probably not but the only way to know for sure is to try it and see.

I have read thousands of opinions since I started out in DIY hi-fi and although they are of academic interest, that's all they are (including my own)!

There is no substitution for practical experimentation as no two systems are the same.

Also 'good value' is a unit-less measurement that means quite different things to different people, depending on their attitude to money, their financial circumstances and their philosophy on life in general. 😉

Seasonal boxes Post #2248

Once used a Black & Decker drill case (don't know if they still use metal ones). I had to re-enforce the corners but other than that the only give away was the connections and two heatsinks on the back. The case contained two Maplin 150W mosfet amps (this was about 20 years ago). Access was perhaps a little too easy by opening the two catches at the front, but I didn't have kids back then.

The amps were eventually rehoused for a friend's keyboard amps, and I believe they are still in service.

Much fun though.

Hello Peter,

nice to hear an answer from the "master of the gainclone".

If I would like a very crisp sounding GC, with clear, natural voices and high resolution in the highs (very deep, strong bass is not necessary).
What kind of capacitor would you recommend?

1. BG standard 1500 µF

2. BG FK 1000 µF

3. BG N 680 µF

I listen to a JLH 2003 update (very high quality parts). THis amp outperforms my ZEN V1, my ZEN V4 and my Hiraga "Le monstre" with Battery PS in all aspects.

I can´t wait comparing the JLH with the GC.

regards

Günter

All the amps are made with nearly the same quality parts.

The Hiraga cames very near to the sound of the JLH. When I hear vokals or piano the JLH is smother and the highs are more crisp. That is what I enjoy hearing the JLH. The music has a lot of flow and the highs are very, very detailed. Compared to the ZEN´s it is like taking away a curtain.

regards

Günter

Zen's are nice and easy to listen to but it's not that hard to outperform them (especially if you have speakers within 93-94 and lower efficency).
Try to outperform Aleph 4 or Aleph 2,that will be the challange.
I'm not saying it's inpossible ,but it is much harder.
