Hi Skunark,
If your interested, I have an extra pair of Melbs I’m not using right now. PM me your info and I will send them to you.
I’ll get more when X has another batch made 🙂

Hi X,
Thanks for the note on having 2 cases and 1 Yarra. I plan to use the extra case for a different preamp build.

Hello builders,
I´m thinking loud layouting Wayne´s BA 2018 preamplifier to be also used with the YARRA mainboard.
What do you think about this idea?

It ought to work. The existing board is 60x63mm and pretty open. Four surface mount FETs in SOT23. Gain is just under 12dB.
Hi JP,
Are you thinking to layout daughter boards of Wayne’s preamp to mount on the Yarra MB like the Melbourne’s?

I tried looking around briefly but could not find any data on harmonic distortion profile, noise floor, etc. what is the signature of this amp? Looks like differential FET input stage with lots of CCS’s and a bipolar push-pull output.
Any thoughts on PS transformer voltage rating for preamp-only use and possible future alternate modules, i.e., maximum flexibility? Was planning on 25VA/18V...

25VA/18v is fine for general purpose preamp. If you want to drive a 0dB gain amp like F4 to clipping, you will need the 22v version.
Can the Yarra Preamp be configured to swing the Edcor audio transformer directly thru a coupling cap in the M2X, without using a daughter card?

Yes, I believe so. I have done that before with the Aksa lender which is the single rail version of the Melbourne (and I have completely bypassed the Edcor as well). It works fine and indeed, the Melbourne core (the amp in Yarra) was desgined to drive the 600ohm load that the Edcore presents.
Yessss !
That makes it alot easier for me, i just need to concentrate on the Yarra build up now.
Totally happy with my M2x, and now i can do away with those daughter cards.
Thanks !

Yarra M2X Direct Drive Test
Hi Meanie,
I just tested it out - connected the Yarra to the M2X with the input module removed and used a cap to bypass the input/output (bolts 2 & 4). I used a 15uF film cap that I had on hand (simpy made a loop and bolted it on the brass standoff). If you wanted to, you could solder it to the two little holes on the PCB that are used for a jumper. Technically, the Edcor is 600ohms and so a cap like a nice audio grade 220uF Nichicon Muse or Elna Silmic II should be used here for the deepest bass response. However, I tested that by hand holding a 470uF Silmic to the pins to bypass the 15uF film cap and could not hear a difference in bass. It could be that the impedance is much higher than 600ohms, maybe 2k evern? In any case, it works and sounds great. Verified to be good for this application.
