Hi ChuckT,
Thanks for sharing that. I am not sure of your methodology for measuring ringing with respect to impedance matching. I can definitely tell you that if there is ringing with the Altec/Peerless 15335A transformers, I do not hear it. My ARC LS7 line stage has a rated output impedance of 200 ohms and the Weiner's input impedance is in the neighborhood of 30kohms. This should be fine for using the input transformers without the RC damping network. There could be situations like what you've measured on your scope, and perhaps the damping network is required. For now, I will continue to enjoy the Weiner PBTL as I have it set-up.
I tried a simple 10k resistor load and there is a lot less ringing for the Altec, but I can still see a large spike with very minor ripple after. For 2k load, however, everything looks nice. But unfortunately, the Wiener load is a bit higher than 10k

Order status:
- Pyjamas, lacro, wushuliu, blue5 and Nick S (not sure what your nick is) = mailed out.
- BBUK, williamau, gordon_lo: orders complete, need to pack into boxes. Meant to grab bubble wrap/packing peanuts and go through the bin of assorted boxes at work today, never got a chance to.
- tigerfoo/shochu/patkwok: orders built, need lockwashers for mounting kits. Popped into Fastenal today thinking they'd have them in stock... nope. Ordered a box though.
Almost got CFT out the door too but both stereo 8's I built last night have PVCC shorts :/
Got an assortment of Pro's built but not assigned to anyone in particular yet.

Good news and hope the troubleshooting will go smooth...🙂
Just a reminder..when done, could you ship them out together with ChuckT's big order 😀, thanks!

Dusted off an aikido lv kit i put together a few years ago and paired it with the wiener - sounds excellent! Some serious tube magic added. I am using one of the cheap ebay dact smd attenuators. Such a bargain. Forgot how good they sounded.
Alas, now I have to manually adjust the volume, unlike my pga2310 pre w/remote I've been using...
wushuliu,
Are you still enjoying the Aikido tube line stage with your Weiner amp? I would think John Broskie's line stage would make a great match with the Weiner amp. I have a half completed Aikido octal (6SN7s) tube line stage in boxes in the garage that I need to unpack and complete. I'm all set with my Audio Research LS7 line stage, and I'll end up selling the Aikido when it's complete, but I'd still like to try it with the Weiner PBTL amp, because I'm curious how that pairing would sound.

Yeah, I love it. Expansive, atmospheric. Only downside is working with the higher gain. I had to drop it from 26 back to 20. The aikido lv/wiener combo is yummy.

I am also powering the wiener with lifepo4s now, providing an even cleaner presentation. Not a huge leap from my modded Astron, but worth the effort (which was minimal).

Thanks. Off the grid might be the way to go.
As for gain, I've dialed my Weiner PBTL amp down to 20dB with the switching frequency set at 1.2MHz in BD mode. With the Altec/Peerless 15335A transformers, I am really impressed with the tone and timbre. With my upgraded Astron RS-12A regulated linear power supply, it has plenty of slam to reproduce complex passages with ease.

Hm, you don't care for 1spw mode? I find it more natural than BD (my speaker cables are not that long though which i remember saturnus saying was a critical factor for 1spw).
Back on track...
Thanks for the advice and well guessed. Thought the minus on source in was reserved for balanced inputs...and that a simple RCA connection as mine used ground.
Never mind the gain resistors. Found a nice shop in London for electronic stuff last week on a vacation trip, so the knob to the left will act as a 4-step gain selector using matched metal film resistors.
So..just a new soldering iron and a volume control away from completing the project.

I'm really looking forward to getting my weiner amp when it's ready. So many positive comments regarding this amplifier, my anticipation mounts. I normally use a vintage valve amp (Leak stereo 20) it will be fascinating to compare.
Got a few more boards built up, every 4 ohm Pro ordered for this group buy is now built and tested.Hi Gmarsh! Any updates on the order status?
Haven't been by Fastenal to grab more lockwashers, I'll pop over and do that today. Beyond that your order's ready to ship.
Finally rounded up some boxes/bubble wrap, packed up over the weekend, mailing out today: gordon_lo, wushuliu, BBUK.
gordon_lo and BBUK mailed out, left the receipt with shipping costs in the car, I'll nag you guys for shipping money later 🙂
Didn't make it to Fastenal.

I've got a power supply question, hoping to gain some insight.
I'll be using my new amp in a portable battery powered setup. I've currently got two 12v 9Ah SLA batteries for power.
Originally I was thinking I would wire the two batteries in series to get ~24v to power the Wiener stereo card. However, I'm realizing that the combined weight of two 9Ah SLA batteries is going to be a bit heavy. Also, sounds like two batteries may be overkill since the amp doesn't draw that much power.
So my question is, would I be ok with 12v powering the amp instead of 24v? And more importantly, is there any benefit/drawback of going with 12v, 24v, or some voltage in between? Should I expect audio output/performance to be somewhat similar anywhere in the 12-24v range?

I don't remember off the top of my head which amp you bought.
If it's a Pro, you need 18-36V, so you'll want 2 SLAs in series.
If it's not a Pro, and you're powering it off SLA's, the absolute max voltage that the TPA3118 chip can tolerate is 30V, recommend maximum voltage is 26V. Two fully charged SLAs at 14.4V will be 28.8V, which will definitely push the ratings on the chip.
Personally I'd go with 12V for a battery powered application. It'll be more efficient (1/4 the switching loss at 12V versus 24V). Setting the switching frequency to 400KHz and the modulation mode to 1SPW will give you the lowest dissipation.
In unrelated news, swung by Fastenal today and they didn't order what I asked them to order. So I popped by another fastener shop I didn't know existed until I searched for them on my phone, and they had everything! So I'll be packing up a bunch more orders to mail tonight.

Oops sorry, I ordered a stereo TPA3118.
Just measured my SLA batteries at ~12.4V fully charged, so at least 24.8V will be safer than 28.8V. battery link
Sounds to me like the more efficient single 12V is the way to go though 🙂 I'll have to try both setups out just for fun. Thanks!

The PBTL monos sound so much better than the stereo it's not even funny. I don't know if it's because I have them wired almost directly to each speaker (leaving < 1m or so internal/external wiring) with the 1spw, the Coilcrafts (yes I do think they play a part), the belden wiring to the aikido, recent PC software changes, or all the above. But these sound WAY better. Lower noise for sure and naturalism is superb. If I really had to guess I'd say the direct wiring and Coilcraft inductors. My previous modded YJ board with the Coilcrafts also had a naturalism the stereo wiener lacked a little bit.
But these monos. Wow. Great job, Gary!

hmm unless you have some fancy battery management electronics in the box I'd like to suggest that one or more cells in your battery is damaged. Should be more than 13.
