The Weather

Just a guess, but do you think they’ve been fed from the window at breakfast before?

An old traditional ballad or blues lick from a bazillion years ago, or at least Robert Johnson mid to later 1930’s, I think?, but yeah it’s become a fundamental part some folks’ lexicon.
Message In A Bottle by Police, 1979.
"Walked out this morning, I don't believe what I saw
Hundred billion bottles washed up on the shore
Seems I'm not alone at being alone
Hundred billion castaways, looking for a home
I'll send an S.O.S to the world
I'll send an S.O.S to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle, yeah
Message in a bottle, yeah...
"

Perhaps, but that’s a bit chilly for me personally, and what I didn’t mention is that after running the “heat“ all afternoon while out for a walk and brunch, the temp never got above 17C in the “rather compact” room (well under 400sq ft). I‘ve always preferred warmer rooms, (20-22 ) and am probably spoiled by having a nice gas fireplace in both our living room and den; keeps them cozy while not having to heat the entire house.

Fairy nuff. I prefer cool. I don't feel the need to have the house such that I can wear shorts inside in the winter. But that could just be that it doesn't get that cold here. Seems to be some correlation between outdoor temperatures and how warm people like their houses in winter.

On topic: forecast says high of 15C tomorrow. This is an odd December for sure.

-3.3C and another 5-10cm of snow on the way.

jeff
Yup, that happened, and currently (10:00am) reading a balmy 0C from our sheltered outside remote sensor. My wife is trying to talk me into a short (1hr for her) bracing hike later this morning. After 50yrs together you’d think she’d get it that I‘m not a particular fan of the cold, but I guess selective message recaption/retention is not solely a male trait.

In Vermont we have geniuses wearing shorts, short sleeves, and down vests at 20F. If it's dry, they are wearing sandals.

Maybe it's because in the spring/summer/fall it has become impractical to wear shorts, because of the swelling(exploding?) tick populations.

Pacific Northwest has nearly a foot of snow in many areas. I’m lucky I haven’t had to go out for any reason as it’s a holiday for me. The temperatures in the teens usually doesn’t happen here also until the end of January.
That didn’t stop me from shoveling the driveway and paralyzing (extreme, sudden back pain)myself right at the end of the job. Someday maybe I’ll learn to at least stretch first!

Yeah, I'd hate to drive in this stuff (PNW icy roads). I know my back, so the driveway gets two stripes; one for the left wheels, one for the right, for just one of two cars in the garage. 1st snow I did it, second I refreshed, 3rd snowing this morning - forget it. Light misty rain in Olympia when I last went out; I'm going to assume will eventually all wash away like it always does.

15.5 in the bedroom tonight, gonna be hard to breathe - without my nose freezing.

More than one time I've been riding in the car with a child, driving through a particular place that they'd call the "rich people's houses" or "rich people's neighborhood". Always wondered why they didnt teach in school - explicitly - "if this is what you want in life, this is what you need to do". I guess they dont teach that, because a good proportion of it comes out of someone else's hide. They'd be embarrassed to teach someone these are the kinds of things you have to do to other people, in order to get that. Not everyone, not every case of course.

When I was about 10, my father drove me around "skid row" which was the Near West Side of Chicago. (It isn't Skid Row anymore and that's an understatement.) Drunks were flopping everywhere. There were mattresses set up in the entrances of derelict buildings. To me they looked like zombies. Then one of the bums stole the boots off another bum while he was passed out in the gutter.

It left an impression on me. My father said that was where I was headed if i didn't do well in school and stay out of trouble. It worked.

My garage is warmer than that, without insulation, how is that possible?!!
Hope you’re staying warm…

The last time I was in the west side of Chicago, my Dad and I went to a donut shop where the whole neighborhood would come for coffee. I had the impression that most had grown up there.
