Forecast last night was "a light dusting of snow".
Woke up this morning to 4-5" of snow covering my driveway.
It took almost an hour of shoveling to get out (100M long driveway), only to find the roads had not been scraped or anything to speak of. Even I-26 was a mess with icy on ramps (up hill).

Got down to -2 F (-18 C) last night, currently a balmy 8 F (-13 C) out there.
Ice everywhere now from the few hours of thaw we had on Sunday.
More snow tomorrow, hopefully just "flurries."
Keeping fingers crossed, no leaks so far, and the ice has not pulled down any gutters yet. (We lost one last year, cost us about $1500 to repair this fall.)

If the weather keeps here, I'm looking at heating cost savings of $1k+ this year.
Lose some, win some.

I got up this morning to go to the gym at 6:15 AM. The thermometer read -10F, so I did the right thing.....I went back to sleep!

Sunday it snowed about 5 inches. Yesterday the sun came out and melted most of it even though the temp never got above freezing. Then overnight the COLD came and froze everything. At dawn the sun showed up and started the defrost cycle again. I took a car load of stuff out to the new house, but could not get down the ice covered driveway, so I parked in a neighbors driveway and walked. By 3 PM it was T-shirt weather, 33 degrees, sunny and little wind. Now it's 20 and the slush is freezing again.
Tomorrow the cycle repeats.......
We never got over 12 F (-11 C) today so there was no further melting.. lol
Our 105 year old heating system has to be checked at least twice a day to make sure there is sufficient water in the boiler at all times to assure continuing operation.. Modern steam boilers holding a couple of gallons of water with leaky old lines, valves, and radiators are not a combination made in heaven. The old boiler had about 15 gallons of water in it, and needed water added once or twice a week.. We did not get an auto feeder as that would have driven the heating plant replacement cost over $10K which was more than we were willing to pay. I regret that decision every day in the winter.. lol When this one gets replaced in a decade or so I will make sure to add the auto feeder. LOL
More snow tomorrow, hopefully not too much.

Apparently it got icy in Oklahoma City. My daughter slipped outside her home and broke her right fibula.
Be careful out there!

Then there's the low water gas cut off failing...🙁
We have both electronic and electromechanical interlocks for low water level, plus I do check every day. We have the unit serviced every year and there are some simple tests I do periodically to make sure it is all working correctly.
Dry firing a steam boiler could result in a calamity so I keep a close eye on it during the heating season..
I'm planning to learn how to use an arduino to keep an eye on it and perhaps intelligently add water when needed.

Last night we got somewhere between 3 and 4 inches of the lightest, fluffiest snow I have ever seen. Shovelfuls weighed no more than a comparable quantity of fairy dust, certainly much less than a comparable volume of light, fluffy pop corn.. lol The ice underlying everything is more of an issue.
Currently about 24 F or - 5 C out there..

Tonight's forecast is another 3" to 5" of snow.
I wish it would hold off until Friday and I'd just take a 3 day weekend.
I chipped ice off the driveway at lunch time and put down salt. I'll chip more after work and hope it is enough to allow me to get out in the morning.

It started off cold, drive to work with the usual gloves and big coat. Then it turned to snow, lunch time drive to the local bookstore was 'interesting'. Then it turned to ice pellets. It's hard to stop them gumming up your windscreen. Needs lots of windscreen washer fluid.
Same here too,
watching the local TO news, 7-10 day wait for city to de-frost frozen water mains/feeds into mostly the East End Beaches area residents, eek and they outlawed out-houses years ago 🙂 Coldest Feb on record they are saying ... come on spring

I was going to do the 450 mile drive to OH this morning, but the forecast was freezing rain along I-80. Put it off until tomorrow. The stuff arrived here about 2 hrs ago.
Last Saturday I found myself saying "I want to drive the car. Wearing tennis shoes"
I took the 4WD Toyota van instead wearing boots.
We are getting another 4 inches of snow in Denver and the ice in the gutters did not get a chance to go away yet.

They forecasted freezing rain for us today. We are a bit further south, where I-70 crosses the Ohio river. We got a bit of frozen rain this morning early, it was 26 degrees at 9 AM, so we decided to abandon our moving plans, AGAIN, due to weather.
We decided to do something even more fun, go to the DMV again, trip #3 to get some more abuse......We left the house at 10 AM, it was 31 degrees and raining....a lot. The DMV refused our attempt to get new drivers licenses again. This time because a signed and "PAID" receipt from the builder is not valid proof that we own a house at the new address. We have a "PAID" electric bill, which is one valid proof, but the "PAID" water bill is not valid because part of the name is torn off (trip #4).
While arguing with the DMV, someone in the line told us how to win the game. The DMV requires two "proof of residency" documents, one of which can be a voters registration, and the court house will give you a voters card with one proof, so after 5 trips to the DMV and 2 trips to the court house, we were soaking wet, but got new drivers licenses, voters cards, changed our address for tax purposes, but struck out with gun permits.....one more trip....later.
During that time, about 2 inches of rain fell. A flood watch has been in effect since Sunday, but turned into a flood warning today. A river of mud was flowing down the street in front of the courthouse. The rain along with 40 degree temps melted much of the accumulated snow.
The forecast calls for rain all night turning to snow tomorrow morning and continuing to snow until Wednesday afternoon when it just gets COLD about -8F.....maybe today was the best day for a long drive.

And I was rolling around in that ice today trying to replace my flat tire. The #*&% jack that came with the truck wouldn't lift it high enough to get the tire off (no, I haven't added lifters). In 11 years and 260k miles I've never had a flat, at least not away from home. Always used a floor jack (and jack stands) to do brakes, etc. Tried to find a piece of lumber or something to set the jack on, but seemed a little too shaky. Walk a mile or so to an auto parts store... lovely day, maybe 20F.
We've been having kind of a nasty winter here, but obviously nothing like you guys on the east side are having.
F150 maybe.....I had a 2003 F150 and I discovered the same thing. The factory jack would lift the rear wheel just enough to get the flat tire off, but not enough to get a full size spare on. I had to deflate the spare, then pump it back up once it was mounted. Everything on the truck was as it came from Ford, no modifications, still had the factory wheels and tires.
