I "nailed" that ! 300 strikes-5 min. (still rapid intensification) 165+/285km - hr. Quite impressive.A crazy lightning ringed eye by noon tomorrow.
Florida must watch this closely ! Catastrophic.

Imagine in the old days, the little bit of advance notice they would have had before such an event. Good luck to them all.
Odd thing happened this year. We used to have to wait for hurricanes to form off the coast of Africa and wait a week for them to arrive.
Now some group of bored kids in the Carribean just have to run around in circles and we wind up with a CAT 3 hurricane by the time it gets to the middle of the Gulf.
Two in a row so far.
Also looking at the water temperatures reminds me why we never went on vacation in Florida until late September or October.

Just joking about the bored kids in the Caribbean area forming hurricanes. Just saying the last two spawned closer to South America rather then off the coast of Africa like the usual ones that hit the US.
Not following what caution is obsolete though.
Florida will get another hurricane this week and I really hope some wind shear will get it down to a 3 before it hits. The other reality is it hits at a wide 5 sometime on Wednesday.

My grandparents collected and then bound editions of National Geographic for about 20 years in the 1920's and 1930's. These are now in my possession. There were enormous storms in that era, rivalling what we see today...but all of the south US is much more populous. The hurricanes of 1935, 1937 and 1938 were catastrophic.
Not sure if you are talking about me since there are lots of people named George. In case you are, I packed up and left Florida 10 years ago. I now live 1100 miles north of my previous location and we still got a lot of rain from the remnants of Helene. Unfortunately both of my brothers still live in Florida, and one of them along with his two kids and three grandkids all live just south of Tampa in the center of the probable landfall zone for Milton. Attempts to contact any of them over the last two days has been futile.Anyone heard from George yet?
I put a random rotation of 5 sets of live "beach cam" videos on a spare computer early this morning. Both of the Captiva beach cams have since gone dark, probably due to the sketchy power situation on that Island. We were vacationing there when Helene forced us out. The power had already become unstable before we left. Two Sanibel Island cams are still up, though one freezes for several minutes at a time.
For the most part people seem to be heeding the "get out of harm's way" advice except for the activity around the "southernmost point in the continental USA marker in Key West. It seems that people need to have their picture taken as the salt water blasts them....and the now shiny car or SUV they came in. If you want to take chances with your life, that's your business. Please leave your small kids in the car! The surf was considerably worse this morning at about 9:00 AM as the first feeder band from Milton came through Key West.

Yes I meant George as in Tubelab knowing you were in the general area as the last hurricane. Hoping all was well.
I have friends near Orlando that decided to get sandbags and ride this one out. Hoping they are far enough inland.
My general worry is this storm may not weaken as much as they had hoped before making landfall.

I live 50 miles east of Orlando Fl. (Orange County) but I still wonder how much you can protect your house

I made contact with my brother who lives on a golf course southeast of Tampa. He plans to stay in his house despite not having hurricane shutters and living in a low-lying area. One of his kids who lives on a waterway that is connected to Tampa Bay has evacuated to a relative's house on high ground. The other kid plans to stay put, but I have not been to his house and do not know its ability to stand up to a big storm.
It seems that the Key West live cam has gone dark as has one of the Sanibel beach cams. Perhaps the Key West cam was intentionally shut down to curb the stupidity surrounding the monument.

The Key West live cam seems to sporadically come and go. I just watched someone get a pickup truck bed filled with salt water. Good for a previously rust free truck. The remaining Sanibel beach cam does not show a time stamp, so it may be a replay, or maybe it never had one, I don't remember. Time will tell.
My sister lives in Orlando , FL . she says just a lot of rain , a few branches down.
She put phone out back , the Mexican frogs (invasive) were so loud ! They loved it.
She is next to the St. Johns river state forests. Not much more wild near Orlando ...
McMansions from coast to coast along I4 ...

This is going to make our trip to the hockey game rather nasty. Driving is out of the question so getting on and off the train might dampen our spirits. it will be one of our windiest in a long time.
