I can't speak for anyone else, but I usually go without gloves unless it's too cold with just a shirt and sweater under a very thin jacket.
So gloves = maybe below ca -5c if I'm walking in the forest, sitting still and fiddling with just over 0c wet metal parts is pointless with gloves, so even then it's gloves at just below 0c.

Usually have like a beanie/hat in a pocket if the weather calls for a thin jacket, just in case.
Over 16c is t-shirt weather.

If you're active a combo of very thin wool sweater + long wool underpants, outdoors pants and gloves works well to -10c maybe even -15c, no jacket required. But if you are going to sit still for a while after sweating, wait until your back is nearly dry, then put on the jacket, or else you'll freeze really bad.

I don't do freezing, it's uncomfortable.

Not a fan of heat above 30c myself, but after one episode of chilblain bordering on frostbite while riding my bike to school as young teen - too cool for toque and gloves - I tend to bundle up from around 5C and lower. No need to explain about wind-chill after that.

Now suffer from mild Raynauds syndrome, sometimes even in the low teens C.
 
Do you have any use for "hand warmers"? I found them in the chemist for sale recently. Made up of "Iron powder, water, activated charcoal, vermiculite and salt." and apparently they are ok to use in a pocket or gloves.

We buy those by the box here. It's like anything else though, if you don't use them regularly, you'll forget you have them, which happens to us a lot.

The toughest thing to dress for is outdoor skating. You can bundle up all you want, but your feet are going to be cold no matter what.
 
-40C=-40F which is the common limit of living at Yellowknife. 16C is 61F which is where I can be fooled it's summer if direct sunlight ( today at 8AM ). 28C is 82F which is a very nice summer that could get too hot. Notice what I did there.
Hm, easy to remember these handy conversion points, thanks. I always have had difficulty with °C/°F conversion. Using Kelvin in everyday life would be better 🙄

We need skates with builtin warmers. Come on CCM get with it. I guess it will have to be socks with warmers.
I wonder how many have had the experience of a frozen foot thawing out process and the pain involved.
Certainly toughens you up as a hockey player.

Yeah, I'll have to try battery heated socks if my 2 year takes to skating. My 5 year old has already made her no skating / no hockey decree.

I'm told that if you leave room in the toe box enough to wiggle your toes that will work, but at 51 I doubt I can improve that much, I just try to stay off my butt.
 
I used to use thermal clothes on the motorcycle. I went out at -15C one day at 90 MPH and lived. The suit was Motomod from France. It felt like my throat was cut when I got off 30 minutes later.

The sun was still doing something last night at 10PM on the longest day.My son says there are 4 longest days as the difference is no worth saying between them. He made a similar point about 25 th December as being when the sun is no longer at the lowest point to ancient eyes.
 
It's UV light you need for vitamin D production

Sometimes UV exposure is not adequate to ensure enough vitamin D.

I recently skipped 8 months of sleep altogether, my head was highly disfunctioning during the second half.
A blood test showed insufficient vitamin D, despite a 40ft swimming pool in the backyard and lots of hours spent outside, 25µg vitamin D pearls are on the brekkie list since.
D is more a hormon than a vitamin, the ins and outs are not entirely understood yet

Vitamin D production declines as your skin tans from sun exposure. A dark skinned (from sun exposure) person will produce far less D that a fair skinned person. This is accepted by most medical researchers, but there are many other factors, the largest of which is the melanin type predominant in your skin (ancestry factors). Other factors still remain unknown or unresearched.

I really like to walk barefoot in the forest though, but not so much in the winter.

I have been a barefoot person for most of my life. I also lived in a tropical climate most of my life. The barefoot habit is hard to change after 65 years. I moved to a much colder climate 4 years ago but still do not wear shoes except to the gym where they are required.

The secret to being barefoot in winter is to never stop moving. Walking on frozen ground, within reason, is OK if you keep walking. Hitting a patch of ice will lead to butt prints in the snow. Calloused feet have zero grip on ice! I have found some flip flops that seem to grip better than most shoes. They have become my winter compromise.

Obviously my body's internal thermostat is somewhat whacked, and is getting worse with age, but I'm comfortable working outside in just a pair of jeans in sub zero C weather if it is dry and not too windy. Even at this temperature I will still sweat. A shirt will get wet down the back from sweat which can make me cold depending on wind chill.

The first body parts to get cold are my hands. They can turn blue or purple and really start to hurt at 5 to 10 C if I'm not using them, say just walking. The onset of Raynauds is related to the temperature of the rest of my body. My hands usually will remain normal down to near or below 0 C if I'm not wearing a shirt of shoes. If I put on a shirt, I must put on gloves.

For the first few years I got stares and comments, but by now the neighbors have grown used to seeing me outside working in the winter or shoveling snow in just jeans and flip flops (for traction on icy asphalt).
 
I heard recently that being fat is not a lifestyle choice. For years I was 87 Kg and then went up to 102 Kg. I had a life and death battle with the flu and went to 92 Kg. My body accelerated back to 102 Kg as quick as it could. I am officially obese although my doctor laughs and says I must have heavy bones.

In my work I meet things like this where the facts don't add up. If I was a "concept of obese person " my weight would not stop at 102 Kg. Without any effort on my part it's planted there. Equally when I do try it's makes me feel ill for no real change. I read that the fat we have is in fact an organ of the body and sends out messages to eat or stop. Thus modern life is somehow reprogramming us ( Vit D also ). It could simply be excess sugar which is in gigantic proportions in the most unlikely foods. If this is true, shame on you people who work with this as you have very rich lifestyles and are no more than witchdoctors. I speculate that if this function is correct then however crude the way it works the fat is like the pancreas and might respond to some stimulus. We might inject into the fat to start a rebuild rather than by mouth. Whatever the truth of it I admire someone said it.
 
Those heat pads and battery powered clothing is pointless, it runs out eventually.
I have no cotton socks, all of them are wool, varying thickness. Even if it gets wet you do not get cold with proper wool.

I really like to walk barefoot in the forest though, but not so much in the winter.

The socks are fine - they easily last a night's observing, then just get recharged.. 🙂
 
I sometimes get gout. Barefoot works. I guess I mostly walk barefoot since the gout. Mostly habit. Without any change of lifestyle my gout is mostly gone. Could be barefoot helped. I was barefoot in Sri Lanka which might be unwise. An old lady gave me a telling off until I said gout. At my journeys end was the botanic gardens which some say are the worlds best. The grass is like a carpet. I was so happy as I thought my feet would wear out and bleed. They didn't !
 
I hate Vitamin D supplements, they always make me feel like I'm over extending/exerting myself too much to the point that my neck and head ache like crazy. Sure they are probably the best substitute to caffeine for getting work done but I don't want to be that active, things begin to hurt a lot at that point then, bones begin to scrape together.

What I have been doing lately is drinking large amounts of Coles Orange & Mango "fruit drink" (25% fruit juice), I find that without the pulp (pulp just goes through me without being properly digested) I can have the energy that I need and it gives me plenty of up and go too. I drink this instead of soda pop. It isn't as sweet as you think it is, only 9.2 grams per 100mL of sugar. Its only cheap too at $1/L, I could fill my car with this.



Had some lovely weather all day today, nothing but sunlight all day. Hopefully the rest of the week stays the same and I can reassemble my car.

A few years ago we celebrated New Years Eve with a astonishing 5 degrees C (41F), people were dressed up in gloves, scarfes, hats, winter boots, the lot.

Half a year later we celebrated Midsummer Eve. The same temperature - 5C (41F) but this time were dressed in T-shirts, sandals, shorts ....

All May was a joy - between 75 and 85 degrees F for almost a month, but by the beginning of June, came the Swedish Summer, but today the sun is back.😉
