I have a book on tensors and vector spaces, one page stick out. It is literally a page of integration symbols making it look horrifically complex.
The reality is that it's language being used makes it looks complex. In reality, the geometry is simple and expressed in a different language form the calculation is simpler and ideas can be deduced faster from it.
A good example of this in "real life" is Feynman diagrams. The same pictorial concept is being applied to quantum reasoning by Bob Coecke and Alex Kissinger and it won't be the last time a different language will appear.
I would expect the same is true for FFT and audio.

I knew a person (both of us were in a hospital, so I could follow what he were doing), who all day calculated the perfect tooth gear. He did it in head, and entered his results in an exercise book by pencil. He did not disclose any details, because his biggest fear was that someone would steal his intellectual property.
