Well, I was just trying to get folks to think a little bit about what they were doing to avoid blown fuses and other embarassments. If anybody wants more clarification about the points I mentioned they can always ask me off line.
kilowattski said:I believe if you read the entire thread, that the agreement between Nelson and the builders is that Nelson does the design, he retains the rights to the design, and they must build what he designs. I don't think they can sway from the agreement.
They don't have to build the design my way at all, if they don't
want to. So far, the design simply consists of a power supply
which takes overkill advantage of the parts on the table and
an output stage which is simply a massive bank of Mosfet
followers. This is interesting from a DIY viewpoint, but doesn't
represent much entertainment for me personally - I've done it
many times.
The really interesting part will be the front end, and with the
modular approach to the PS and OS, we will be in a position
to explore a number of topologies.

Personally, i think Dave and Casey are doomed.
How about making a self-propelled chassis to even the odds a little? Put those 3+ hp to good use. Slap a chair on top, use some 18" woofers for wheels, and you have the ultimate ghetto blaster.

I think you could put swivel wheels on your Lazy Boy and mount the 18" woofers on a steerable board as a Pistonic atmosphere thrust engine. The umbolical cord would be a pain though. 🙂 🙂

He who retains everything.
Alrighty then!
A few things first. One. Not shown, are the added touches to the power supply that Casey and I are adding. these will not alter the basic topology of the supply itself, but rather enhance and protect things a bit.
Casey and i have spent a lot of time discussing saftey issues. and these babies are definitly something to be cautious with! so we have devised a 2 stage power up sequence system idea. 1st the transformers will power up, then the cap bank will ramp up to full voltage over a short period of time. We have some Monster 50A 500V mosfets that will will put to good use here. We have also devised a power discharge system so that when the amp is powered down, or a cover is removed and a saftey interlock is tripped. the cap bank will discharge quickly, but at a safe rate.
We are also toying around the idea of having a MCU system handle a variety of chores! But there will be plenty of time to play with such ideas AFTER we get going on these things.
For me the whole point of this is experimentation! Nelson has graciously provided us with a starting point. we will build it as he has handed it down to us. THEN. we will DIY it from there!
Only we are doing it on a Taco Bell Grande scale!!!
As far as the power line is concerned. im picturing dedicated 30-50 amp outlets for these babies!.... Hey I wonder if we could wire these in series and run them on 220V????? HMMMMMM!
Casey and I will be at the CES show Thursday! YEAH! and im sure a lot of brainstorming will be done and we will come back with many of the open details finalized!

I suspect a monster amp needs straps ?

On cold days, it takes a while to fire up the amplifier

To hold it down to the table I assume? 🙂
Anthony
What you need is a Crow Bar safty circuit, and a chicken stick back upwith soft dump and hard dump. Don't forget to safty jumper across the cap-bank when not in use.
How many Mega-Joules was that ???

I wont be satisfied this project was a success till I see someone arc welding with it 😎
A square wave and 20 amps would do it wouldnt it?

Hi Folks:
Casey here (the quiet partner).
While the identities of ZeroCool and SmarmyDog should probably remain anonymous, here is a pic of two strangers we saw in the PASS Labs room at CES.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Neither one of them looks like they would qualify for the "Worlds Strongest Man Competition". I guess they are going to have rent a fork lift to move the amp around.
😀
