The making of: The Two Towers (a 25 driver Full Range line array)

I must have missed a reply somewhere, but remember this: You can't win every battle.

I, and I know I'm not the only one, am happy when you reply to my posts.

Take care of that flu. Lots of warm drinks and rest. That means, listening to your Towers at reasonable, on the side of quiet, level. 🙂

I didn't even know I was in a battle 🙂. When everything I mention becomes an argument I should have known I was though. Even if what I mentioned wasn't even my opinion. Usually there's more than one view and it's healthy to know about it.

The stupid thing is: I just finished a reply. I didn't post it, but to clear my mind I had to write it down. I saved it to hard disk for myself as a reminder not to do this anymore.

I think I'll follow your advise, turn on my stereo and dream away. A dream about big subwoofers probably 😀.

Great scene and lyrics

Always look at the bright side of life...

Well all it took was some tunes to get the mood back in shape 🙂. Hopefully these flue signs will follow soon.

Listening to some tunes confirmed I do want to keep that bottom end firm and solid and see what I can do about giving it some headroom. Boy do I love that feel. Literally feel.
On Pink Froid (no typo) it shook my belly. And I'm not a fat person, on the contrary actually. Music can really be moving 😀.

I made some minor changes on the bottom end, released a PEQ cut I had at 14 Hz for safety. It might bring me trouble if I use that for Home Theatre stuff, but I can always keep my secondary "Zone" for HT guarded with some safety measures.

It's more than likely I will try a couple of subs, knowing how hard it can be to implement them to match the arrays. Still thinking about a clear Left Right balance to very low figures. I know all the common theory of that being less important below 80 Hz and all. I've ran a single sub in my car for years in mono. But this setup is different. The clarity it brings is still mindboggling.

If it doesn't pan out, well, it just has to! Maybe I'll bring in my old speaker with 15" woofer in, plug the port and try a few things with measurements. Too bad I didn't have many days alone this week (except today) so I couldn't really use this vacation time to experiment. I'm up for more experimenting. I'm ready for a new challenge.

My experiences with class D, mainly Tripath, have only be positive. Ranging from very positive to ´how in earth is it possible that this small PCB makes such incredibly loud and good sound´-positive. And in spite of their diminutive looks, they are usually well protected, to the point of being impossible to blow up. You should have tried the ones you had on loan 🙂

Hi Ronald
I have been following this thread, on and off since the beginning. Congratulations on your amazing progress.
I am considering something similar, and I am wandering how much of what you have achieved could be done with PEQ only? I would prefer to use miniDSP nanoDIGI, which does not have IIR/FIR filters.

You can get a long way there, in fact we do have users like Halair and I believe OPC that still use a form of IIR filtering (non FIR) and are quite happy with it.
I'd say it's still worth it, I remember how glad I was with just a "guess" as EQ curve.

Absence of floor and ceiling reflection and quite a bit of insensitivity to reflections (aside from vertical planes) make the line array unique in it's behaviour. It does matter what driver you choose. Pick one you like/trust.

I meant to draw a 3D picture of my room long ago but never did get around to it. Probably won't happen any time soon.
So the next best thing would probably be a picture showing a little more room than the previous ones I posted.

Here's a shot I took this morning:
LineArray.jpg

Behind both curtains are huge damping panels. Taller than the arrays and almost spanning the width of the curtains. The third panel sporting the Led Zeppelin print is visible on the left. A couple of cushions between the couch and the poster/panel to finish it off. (their action verified by measurements)

This image is showing half my living room, the other half being about equal in size. This probably will explain my choice to 'only' use absorbing panels as treatment. I simply don't have the room for diffusors.
That's why I followed up with an ambient speaker project, positioned below each corner of the poster/panel. They are behind the cushions from the couch firing sideways into the outside perimeters. The sound bounces back of the stuff placed on the side table on one side and the desk on the other side.
