Hello Jacco.
The only ones I could get at Conrad (I know, I know), with a high enough max current spec., were 10 ohms NTC's but I think they no longer have those (Imax was something like 9A). I am going from memory here, it's been a while since I ordered those (I really should get some work done on the Alephs).
Regards,
Jarno.

Nothing wrong with Conrad, i started buying parts at the Conrad shop in Essen/Germany in the 80s.
If the stuff with the current limiter is not to your satisfactory once you finished the Aleph's, let me know, i can get you the right ones.
Great boards, Blues master, the blue and green combo looks terrific. Thanks for posting the many pics.
Send the GB honcho in.

Jacco,
Do you know if it's possible to order from Farnell or RScomponents without too much hassle (not being a business)?
And what are the right NTC's 22ohms? What's the current rating on those?

Jarno.

Thanks, Jacco. Who's that honcho?
You're getting there Jarno.
The 12"x12" board is now separated into 4 pieces of 3"x12" boards consisting of a pair for each Aleph channel. A pair consists of Boards I and II. Board I contains the Input circuit and the lower output FETs. Board II contains the Aleph CCS FETs and the string of output resistors. Here are some pics. I used a pocket blade to deepen the v-scoring which makes separation easier.

For an Aleph 3/30/4/5/small X you can mount the pair of boards of one channel in one heatsink (sized accordingly of course). You can always build monoblocks if so you choose.
For Aleph 60/2 monoblocks each board gets its own heatsink.
For Aleph 1.2/large X monoblocks the picture represents one channel😎

Hot-rod plans - higher res.
Hello Blues,
Do you suppose that you could put the design for your Aleph boards up again, but with a slightly higher resolution. The .pdf's don't really look that clear when enlarged, certainly not for me to be able to read easily. What program did you make the files with?
(I use Circad '98 which can read Gerber files.)
Essentially, at present, Aleph's are not on the "front burner" for me as I am getting some speakers built, however it could make its way there soon. Then I will be looking at making some small Alephs (perhaps some Mini or 3/30 combinations) and your boards look nice. What I would probably do is etch them myself when the time comes.
BTW, are you selling them at present or still getting things going with only runs of a few sets at a time?
Regards,
George.

Nice Boards Blues
I am currently running 6 amps (total 12) on an Aleph 30.
There are some improvements however they are drowned by the large hum from the conventional PS under such a load.
I find this disappointing given the considerable effort involved for the small additional gains.
While the Hot Rod Aleph is an interesting alternative for SE lovers, the X Aleph is perhaps a more appropriate and elegant candidate for high current balanced SE operation.
The lower voltage rails and higher currents are more manageable while the design is strides ahead sonically over its predecessor.
In subjective terms I have not done a direct comparison recently but I recall emailing Nelson way back in 2001 the Aleph 30 my first Aleph was answer to Valve SE fanatics, while the Aleph 2 had the sheer authority and is in some ways cleanest of any 100 watt SE amp available.
This of course is my own view at the moment and should not deter others interested in this variation of the Aleph.

George,
The circuit board design was made using AutoCAD. The forum simply could not accept that big a file so I had to turn into PDF for posting. Macka actually etched his boards.
Jacco, thanks again.
Ian,
The PS makes or breaks any kind of amp. I must stress that the "HotRod" name attached to my boards doesn't mean you have to run it in greater bias than a regular Aleph (you have that option though depending on your PS and heatsinks). It means flexible power that can be tuned to taste. This is for lovers of Aleph and then some. Flexible from a Mini-Aleph (from what I've read it should work), regular Alephs and the AX, plus the tunability of all the parameters that I am aware of or made aware of. I'll be posting an Excel file for the jumper config, trimpot, etc. soon.

I bet the small additional gains you're hearing now will be bigger if your amp is faced with a more difficult load. Which is the purpose of higher bias and of course lower distortion too. An Aleph 30 (HotRodded to 6 amps) that can take on say a Martin Logan Aerius. Please get a bigger transformer🙂
Hi,
I am running 600va, the noise is not the transformer.
The problem is I did not account for the additional parts for CRCRC in the chassis. The noise is ripple on the rails and is only just audible with nominal bias of an A3..my mistake

Ian,
You haven't mentioned if you're already using the board design on your Aleph 30. If so, is it working well without modification(s) on your part? Please post some pictures.
BTW did you move to the U.S.? Or am I confused with another Ian (Mackenzie, macka the Aussie)?

Warning,
Macka2 is an impostor posing as the real Macka, a Time Lord and a well known celebrity and friend of the Passlabs crew.
The real Macka is a trouble maker and a bit of a ladies man and loves a drop of Red...as witnessed by the Passlabs crew.
He should therefore be easy to distinguish from the impostor.
The boards have been tested but l have since dismantled the amp to make way for a choke CLCL power supply.
I tried it with some crossover chokes and it sounded Ace!
I have decided to make the Aleph Hot Rod a Class A Plate amp to be secured to the rear of my speakers.....This does away with all the time consuming metal work. When I am done it won't be as pretty at the Rushmore but it will do wheel spins at 150 miles per hour....and burn holes in the road with my High Low Pass Crossover.

Some may wonder where I have been..well I got hi jacked over on the Lansing Heritage Forums and was feed nonsense by a bunch of cowboys claiming JBL was God. Lacking the political skills and growing bored surrounded these wanna bee's I have returned to Diyaudio.com...for keeps I hope. I spent more time helping them make their JBL's sound good than I did building Aleph's...now that was a sin and in vain. I really had to be quite rude to escape their clutches but there you are.
So hello to all my friends incl Nelson, Kent, Grey, Rodd, Peter, William, Panos and so many others.....the Passlabs forum is my life blood..how could I live with out it.
best regards
Ian

The Real MacKa, good to hear from you! I can tell now by your post you're the real thing...as smoothie as silk.
Wheel spins are called "tire burnouts" here. Finally a working HRA board...can't wait to see pictures. It's awesome to hear (pun intended) my boards work. I'd like to see your H/L Pass Crossover design...I have an A3/Zv4 for biamping plus I'll try to build a V12 HotRod Aleph Woodie this one with front end grille, airhorn stacks and tow hitches🙂
Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior, was a favorite when I was 12.
