The Frugel-Horn Project

Tuning the CC...

Ooooops!...I started a new thread looking for help in tuning the "hollow" vocal sound of of my new Frugals...and then I found this thread! Just wondering if anybody has had any recent success in taming this problem (I'm using the 126e drivers). Take a look at my thread for a more detailed discussion.

Thanks,

New Frugal idea for the FE126E in (very) early development. This is not a MK2 version of the F-horn, but something a bit different. Initial math & modelling is done, and concept appears to work pretty well. I thought it best to mention / introduce it here, as externally, it's identical to the Frugel-Horn Build Level 1 upwards. Internals are completely different though, and very simple. If the idea is approved, then a couple of reworked versions for the FE108ESigma and FE127E might emerge.

A teaser in advance: if Fonkens did corner horns, this might be what they'd look like.

Basic idea of new box as I described to Dave last night.

Take a Level 1 build Frugel-Horn, and remove all internals. There is a triangular chamber, of adjustable volume, to accept different units, at the top (surprise!), with a small, slot vent at the bottom of this chamber, below the driver. Under this is a long strike-plate leading to the rear of the cabinet base. And, er, that's it.

Basically, this is a micro-Fonken cabinet, coupled into a massive flared vent for a target F3 of 99Hz, giving another 20Hz of extension and a much slower roll-off as compared to the chamber itself with a simple small resistive vent. Pushing it into corners and / or adding deflectors should boost the LF a bit too. Driver control is very good, as you'd expect from a Fonken, response nice & smooth. The 127, with almost double the excursion of the 126, can have a larger chamber and be tuned lower. Rough layout is attached. I'm trying to tweak the dimensions a bit to reduce the ripple at ~650Hz.

BVR-space... I like. 🙂

I'd been wondering about a final home for my 126s for a while. I wanted something as minimal as I could, as my current mission in (audio) life is to try & extract the highest possible performance from the simplest enclosure I can come up with. So I thought we could combine the sleek aesthetics of the Frugel-Horn with this sort of hybrid fonken BVR corner-firing alignment for a stealthy sort of box that's just a bit different.

Good idea about the bracing Dave. I only put it there really to show a blanking plate to allow the chamber volume to be adjustable, but some bracing certainly wouldn't go amiss.

Measurement plan pages for Harvey 1.1

I went over to the Frugal horns page and tried to get a a look at dimensioned measurements for the Harvey.

This doesn't open up right for me: I can see the picture but no links go to the actual measured dimensions (which I believe were updated for the v 1.1

What I expected to find was a measured drawing but I couldn't get to it.

Firefox browser shows it wants to open a pdf but can't do it.:

Can somebody mail this to me attached or something?

.... the corner loaded BVR sounds very promising! I'd personally like to see one for 8-inchers, which would eventually replace the Frugels ... 😱

Scott, any alternative to the Replicon? 🙂 and as other Spawns, usable with a variety of speakers ?

Keep up the good work!

Try downloading it directly and not load it into Firefox. The server purposely doesn't have "Byte Servering" turned on and FireFox is probably choking on that because the doc is more than 1 page (it should be smart enuff to just download it)

Here is the link http://p10hifi.net/tlinespeakers/FH/download/Harvey-1v1-map.pdf

I will mail it separately as well.

OK, i'm out-to-lunch on that.

The document is actually on dotMac (ie Apple's servers with monster pipes). Safari opens the pdf in my browser (as it is set to), Firefox & Camino both just download it and i can't find where i'd set them to open the pdf in the browser. (these are my 4th & 3rd string browsers -- Camino is the Mac UI version of FireFox)

Even Opera 9.23 and it's finicky-fudge-ported plugin system opened it 😱

Is that a known FF bug? Maybe there's an extension update.

Yes, yes, ok. I got it to open on a newer version of Acrobat.

Plus thanks to Dave D. for sending the file in mail.

The build I wanted to modify won't cut it (only 4 ft not 5 ft.) So it's a scratch build or nothing.

Has anybody got the FE127e Harvey going yet?

I do not know if there is a different Harvey for the fe127 in the works but personally I did not like the fe127 in my harveys. I am about to start building some other fe127 designs to see how much better they will sound. I am very happy with my fe126 drivers in my harveys. My harveys are the originals from the frugel-horn site and maybe the updated design will sound better with the fe127 drivers.
