The food thread

Nah, I married a Hindu

One of the best courses I took in college was "comparative theology" taught by a "sub-continental" Jesuit. Forever after I have been an admirer, and have muchly enjoyed the times I have been to India. Society would be better if more folks could avail themselves of such lectures.

By the rule of our beloved group, I expect these comments to be stricken from the record.

I gather the fast rules are different outside the U.S. The official Roman Catholic rules here allow folks 60 and older to skip the fast.

Also the way older version of a fast was no food or water! A bit hard to do for more than a day.

Another version is no food during daylight. Some change this to one meal a day. Others just go meatless. Of course in Louisiana alligator is considered fish not meat!

But whatever version or varient, nice pastries the day before.

My local bakery has a 200 car parking lot, yesterday it was jammed and overflowing. Thanks for the tip Jack.

It fascinates me to look at the common myths around the world and try and work out where they came from.

I also enjoy the additional excuses to stuff my face with good food 🙂

No food during daylight is the muslim version of fasting during Ramadan.

Generally in catholic Europe you'd give up meat and alcohol for lent which is why Shrove Tuesday is the culmination of carnival (lit. festival of meat).
In the week running up to Ash Wednesday we just totally over eat and get drunk or rather stay drunk and drinking until midnight Shrove Tuesday.
The pancakes seem to be a puritanical thing adding an extra day to the 40 of Lent.

Yesterday was Fettisdagen (Fat Tuesday) or the Semmel Day. Preparing for the 40 day fast means stuffing a big bun filled with marzipan and whipped cream in your mouth is a good idea ...

THE FULL FACTS BEHIND THE SWEDISH SEMLA
Had ours day late - yum

Is there a culture without fried dough in some form?

Inuits on Greenland?

speaking of fried -- if you want the best cannoli I have ever experienced Spedaro's in New Rochelle NY can't be beat.

Sounds nice, I sort of have a goal of never going to the US.
Best pasta dish I've ever had was at a tiny local place somewhere between Monfalcone and Venezia. It was a no-meat lasagna, with pumpkin and huge bits of mushrooms.

Nah, I married a Hindu

Best thing I ever did was marry my wife, she's also Hindu, not very religious anymore though, maybe I've rubbed off some of my opinionated BS.

Tofu doesn’t scream

You've never heard the dreaded Tofu Scream?

We had a visit from a tiny vegetarian here the other day, an 8 year old that feels sorry for the animals so she just wants to eat fish, because apparently that's not an animal...?
We had a little talk.
IMO fish is about the same as birds, they have some similarities in behavioural patterns, they lay eggs, some nest some don't, some dance together for mating etc. To say that a fish is more ok to eat than other creatures, well. I do not understand that. Fish are people too!
So I eat a bit of everything.

Benjamin Franklin decided that as he was looking at the contents of a fishes stomach that it ate other fish. So he conclude if fish ate fish he could also.

Personally the youthful vegetarians I know all never developed to their full height. Human stomachs being smaller than vegetarian animals leaves some to speculate that some higher density caloric foods are required.

Of course there are times when I don't eat meat as I actually prefer fruits, grains and. Veggies. Barley soup is a winter time favorite. But I do that by taste preference. Still like a good hunk of meat simply prepared.

Scott, sure, maybe the Japanese got tempura from the Portuguese, but what about the dumplings and things like gyoza? Where are you going to draw the line?

I think "sort of pasta-like" things have been around since the very first grain harvest. IE longer than anyone can understand. I have some issues with tomatoes, frequently get heartburn after eating them, I love the flavour of a good tomato though.

For those of you who partake in Bloody Mary's, canned tomatoes are a step up from regular tomato juice. A little work? Yes, but you are serving friends and loved ones so....
While I don't condone the use of the precious home brew tommy juice as it's wasted on the crowd that wants more than the necessary amount of alcohol. What I like is the texture you can achieve from the canned, along with the seasonings being integrated with canned starter. It sure beats regular TJ.
You blender is your friend here.
