The "Elsinore Project" Thread

Awesome. Please take your time! Just making sure I didn't send to the wrong person.

To everyone else: Happy to have found this community/specific design. Assuming "The Price is right!" I will be building these in a month or two and will document my build process like I have my other speakers. I have a lot of room work to do, and plus electronics to buy so it'll be a bit!

Hey HelmutzHolz - I meant starting in a month or two! But actually I plan to buy the kit, so it's really just a lego project. I did a bookshelf from scratch awhile ago. The piano lacquer finish took A LONG TIME but the whole cutting/soldering assembly took only 2 weeks or so. I've built a subwoofer too, only a week for that one. BTW Those satori drivers a long with the massive ribbon tweeter are AMAZING. I really wonder how much better it can get. It is also SUPER loud without any audible distortion if I want to go loud. I am going to the FL audio expo this weekend and will see what life has to offer, haha.

I do hope the kits are available! If not, I suppose I have a shop near me that can do the CNC cuts as I am not going to deal with 1/8inch off stuff like I have in the past haha, but it'd limit my ability to do this. My wood working skills are definitely subpar, and I do not have shop space anymore like I used to (or tools). I am sure Joe will help me out if not.

I was confused by the different versions at first then realized it's just driver models, but the ULD drivers are probably out of my budget. I think that's what you mean? The others are the MFC.

I know the ULD version has been built but is there anyone who's heard both and can explain the difference? From a raw driver cost, $600 to $3500 is quite a jump. Just because of budgeting, I could wait a few extra months and do it but I wonder if the difference is that great. Maybe you'll say it goes from a $20,000 speaker to a $200,000 speaker! haha. maybe worth it then 😉.

I first build the NRX MK6, then ULD.
I not able to work with comparisons like speaker worth 20,000 or speaker worth 200,000. I never heard a speaker with a price bill of 200,000 whatever, $ or €, I don't belive in price tags.
But I love music and the ULD brings me a lot closer to my music. That may not count for everyone, so go for your own experience. for me the MK6 is dirt cheap. Not really cheap but worth every cent.

WeBuild4Life,

If I am not wrong one of the forum members had a pair of fully finished Elsinore cabinets (piano black was it?) for sale... might speed up your build time. 🙂
I found it! BEAUTIFUL! and an amazing price as far as I am concerned. Unfortunately PA pickup only. May be worth the drive from Florida 😉.
I'd like to buy the kit from Joe, but I have options now.
It seems I can buy the CNC plans, and wave guide from him only and have a local company cut the wood, possibly? May be the route if the flat ship isn't available anymore.

I intend to build the MK6 and upgrade to the ULD if I am smitten by the Elsinore sound. What other speakers have you been able to compare them to? I understand not $20k + speakers. Just curious as to your thoughts on your subjective impressions on how they sound. 🙂

I had the ULD appraised by a speaker manufacturer and what the final price in the store would look like. In AUD about $50,000, which is around USD $35,000.

The boxes would be very similar, it is the finish that would be high class, so we are talking costs and retail profits. But it should compete with speakers even more pricier than that. The ULD drivers are expensive. In fact my speaker manufacturer friend told me that $10,000 speakers, the quality of drivers are often very average (he used a stronger word than that) and you need to get up to around $20,000 to start get decent drives. The driver may look good and even have that deceptive high-tech look, but is more looks than quality.

So what would a Wilson speaker cost using ULD driver's. I happen to know a few things about the drivers in the Wilsons and they are not as expensive as the Puirifi ULD drivers. I know where the Wilson drivers come from, and they are not rubbish and better than others. But they are not on the level of ULD drivers.

In the Auckland, Brian Gurr has demonstrated the standard EL-6 with speakers from Magico and brands like that, we are talking AUD/NZD in the region of $100,000 and more. Brian is good friends with the importer of Magico.

One things that often come across about the Elsinores, is that they not only compete with extreme priced speakers, but the way that sounds come out of the box sets them apart.

The comments I get is that nothing get emphasised and that you delve into the music. The other frequent comment is that some Elsinore owners have started at first using fairly moderate equipment and loving what they do, then upgrading they realise the speakers are even better and gets better as the system gets better.

I have said it before, the Elsinores were designed with current in mind, where commercial speakers are based on voltage. It does make them sound and behave differently. Anyway, I am referring to what people are saying that they are hearing and my reply is that there are reasons for it.

Bottom line, the Elsinores have a 'sound' that commercial speakers don't seem to have.

Joe I am in the same boat, I can't quote the most recent post - only like. Very weird.

I figured it out. Highlight any text with the right side of the mouse, then while hovering over it, left clock on mouse and you will see a 'Quote' option. Select it and bingo, it appears inside your reply. Try it and let me know if it works for you. I just used it in the above Quote of yours.

Well would you look at that!

You can drop Bob at Bigwood Studios an email - he is doing flat-packs for some other speakers.
I found him when I was going to do the frugelhorn! Still may? I don't see his email on his site though, any clue how to find it? NVM Found it.
