a reporter's notebook ...
" ... Why not a chain of DIY meets starting from the East Coast , ending in the West Coast and carried over to Europe. ..." ...>>> And a good idea it would be too ...
7:00 PM, Sunday Night ... This Just In = a reporters note book:
The weather was capital G Gorgeous = 70 to almost 80, light winds, clear skys, very clear air, super views of the bay & bridge ... fantastic ... lots of sail boats (more so than usual) ...
The crowd! Yes, there was a crowd of about 50 or 60 or so at any one time, maybe a hundred or possibly more all told (I got busy and lost count 🙂 ... The wife even enjoyed it! (And, suprise, suprise, there were women there!) ...
* Parking was not a problem = plenty of free parking out by the Marina Green (one block west) ... the parking inside the Fort was cheap = 6 bucks for the whole day ...
* We parked on the Green and walked over, then came back with a box of toys from Nelson Pass' barn ... and drove back inside (staying 'till almost sun set = parking $4 for ~ 5 hours) with some cables and a "universal" DVD/SACD player I just happened to have along. Grahame and Richard wanted some alternate sources for their almost pure digital extravaganza set up.
Food: ... There was very decent coffee and donuts plus some other pastries provided by Vlad & Company ... When I say decent coffee, not that luke warm, mealey weakass stuff from GackDonalds or StarPuucks, ... I mean the kind = strong, black, rich genuine coffee drinkin' coffee ... the good stuff 😉
More Food! ... well, Grahame, Richard and I toddled over to the Marina Safeway for deli sandwitches, not bad, infact quite good for the price, then we all ate on Fort Mason park benches and watched the sailboats while Vlad's super outdoor boost boxes feed the outdoor crowd the tunes ...
The Toys: I mean every possible DIY item ... tons of genuinely different designs of speakers, amps by the dozen, pre-amps, tubes, solid state, solid sounding ...
* The Fort Mason FireStation is really three good sized rooms with high ceilings ~ 3000+ square feet or more, plus a pair of clean restrooms. It is located in the very back part of the Fort right up next to the Bay.
* I listened to at least six totally different sounding varieties of speakers, most quite good, some almost etherial ... 😎
* Mr. Nelson Pass was there and, although I didn't see it, he must have brought the dump truck ... 'cause there were several tablesfull of his cast off parts, transformers, piles of MOSFETs and xistors, etc., etc., ... He blessed me with a couple of cool looking middie drivers and some really nice looking 8" paper cone drivers (French, don't you know) ... plus some other odds and ends. Apparently his barn was just so full of unneeded hardware, He took this opportunity to lay it all off on the rest of us ... I mean, talk about your party favors !! 😀
* Saw Russ White's Twisted Pair DAC, but didn't get a chance to hear it ... so much stuff, so little time ... Cool lookin', gotta get the details ... Dude, I mean, I gotta hear it ... How can I accomplish this ?
.... more moniana' 🙂

Thank you, thank you...Fast Eddy. For your live report.
I was at a friend's house. who had spent hours tweaking his video system (sound--Fostex up front, gainclone for the coffee table bass system) We watched Clint Eastwood's 'Letters from Iwo Jima' A good film, but all war films are sad...I told my friend's girlfriend that the next time I am invited, we have to watch 'Smultronstället'-- 'Wild Strawberries' by Ingmar Bergman. With so much sadness in the world we need a little upswing.
But I was thinking of you guys, in the 'bunker' and waiting to get home and hear the report. What did you guys like? What was so-so? What knocked your socks off?
I expect more in the days to come.

Damn... I wanted to personally thank you for designing my P/HP 850 and HCA 1500A!

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really enjoyed myself today.
Thanks to Vlad, Mark, and their families for organizing this. If I am missing others who helped organize, and I'm sure I am, thanks to you too.
Thanks to Alex of RAAL for bringing his amazing ribbons to share with us and for the nice presentation.
Thanks to Santa Nelson and his son for helping me and everyone else get a little further along in their projects...or grow their pending project collection. He is not only generous with his knowledge and time, but with his spare parts collection as well!
Thanks for letting me play some records.
Thanks to everyone who turned out. I think the event was a success and look forward to bringing some OB 3 way's next year.

Hi everybody 🙂
Choky should be able to calm down by now, we played a few pieces with the pumpkin, nobody paid any interest, and so it ended real soon...... 😉
Counting out the fact that I, Anatech and Nelson worked pretty much all the day to get Variac's F4's up running to be able to use both SY's and Choky's pre's, we actually did get arounf to talk to pretty much everybody. I sure enjoyed it.
I have no possibility to get my photos transferred to the computer till I get back home, but for the last couple of hours those of us building stuff, vere bathed in flashlight, so photos should be plenty.
See you next year guys and girls.
Magura 🙂

Wow.
whazzat?
awakening sounds?

and - what are your impressions of "two mighty preamps with pathetic (as Magura use to say ) amp " ?
I'm curious - did you made plain ol' ( but leddioded and everywhere CCS-ed ) LTP ?

I guess that SY just saw some photos and was amazed. We can't see them yet

I'm thinkin' that maybe the cops came by and threw the whole rowdy bunch in the slammer! Maybe Sy hid behind some OBs and slithered away before they got him!
-or maybe too much beer😀
Sy, are you the sole survivor???

Nope, I just had to leave somewhat early (2200 or so) because I have a plane to catch this morning. And I've not slept much the past few days. So, everyone else is probably still snoring.
ZM: The preamps acquitted themselves well. No, not an LTP, I think I was more subtle than that. But I'm happy enough with the sound that I think this design will get published; my bulk and parts count was a fraction of that of the Pumpkin. Although my F4-ready pre was dubbed "The ImPasse," I think we'll change the name to "Pumpkin Eater." 😉

A great time was had by all, and a very late time was had by a few. I took today off, so I was able to stay late, hear the hear the F4's with both Zen Mod's and SY's preamps, and help clean up the carnage of Papa Nelson's giveaway. We closed the doors at 11 PM.
Many thanks, and congratulations to the organizers!
Breakfast awaits, more later.

Burningamp was a farce! It never really happened!
😉
AR2 needed a new preamp so he cooked the whole thing up! Sy made his pre up to invoke the competition! Choky fell for it and sent one over. Magura never left his house! How did you guys convince Nelson to go along with the whole thing?
The heist of the decade.
hehe
