The Black Hole......

Odd it doesn't mark your edit. But the email notifier sees all 😛

If someone is happy with their $5k cartridge then I'm not going to argue. But claiming that you need to spend that much to get to a particular level of analog replay is grade A USDA approved BS.

Agree fully. I finished this week my new analog setup with a Denon DL103R and a balanced phono amp I gobbled together. Completely silent.

It still perplexes me how this unlikely technology can sound so well. Especially reverb tails and location ques, the small sounds, are abundantly present. I am very happy.

Now of course, all this goes through an A/D/A stage in my RME ADI-2 Pro because that is where the volume control is, and then through another A/D/A stage in my DSP-based crossover.

Only BOM?

No other costs? Nothing else matters? Hummm....

Help me out here as I try to think about it.... What's the BOM to make an AD797? for a 5532?

A $90 Topping D10 scored remarkably well on testing against the BenchMark DAC (it’s on that site that Sy moved across to - can’t remember the name at the minute).

The beauty about digital is that for pennies, and good engineering, you can get to 99% of the attainable performance on offer.

I think that’s where it’s real value is - sort of the ‘democratization’ of good sound.

Quite why one implementation of a chip can be done for $100 and another using the same chip costs thousands is beyond me.

@jjasniew the CD arrived. Lots of info on how it was recorded. I will take a listen tonight.

ok lets see. These are recordings of REHERSALS not performances done in 2011/12 possibly as a give away. This then resurfaces as something hifi+ magazine is selling in their store in 2016. 4 years on they still have stock, and given the opulent packaging suspect £11 is barely break even.

Why would they bother to remaster for an HD release?

The recorder shown/used does 24/96+ though 🙂 So maybe will come out at a later time on HD internet also.
What recorder? Did I miss something? G5/Logic/RME MADI setup?

The bottleneck seems to be the Neumann DMI-8 converter's ADAT interface that was used. By its nature it's limited to 48/24
NEUMANN

P.S. I personally find it shameless to sell what appears to be the Neumann's marketing/promotional material that normally should be given away for free or at least included with a mag.
