@ Greg Erskine, found this today which may help next time you need a prescription for your mum 🙂 https://www.health.gov.au/sites/def...vices-to-support-the-response-to-covid-19.pdf
Tony.
Thanks Tony. I haven't been worried about filling the prescriptions yet!
I thought this would be a BS video, because getting facts from non-official YouTube channels usually ends poorly... but it's well reasoned by this MD.
Yeah I linked to that earlier but seemingly nobody bothered watching.
I blame the the fact that YT links appear as Youtube rather now rather than the title of the specific video as it did some time back.
Dr Seheult and Dr John Campbell are very reliable sources that just happen to be on YT.

Yes it was a very interesting video. Many of the suplments that are marketed as boosting your immune system contain zinc. I've been taking a night zinc tablet because I figured it couldn't hurt. But it seems there is a bit more to it than that. The stats for Korea vs Italy were very alarming.
Tony.
Tony.
I agree, doctors should not have "pet theories" if they can help it. It can really cause harm like you mention.
I know that the vitamin and supplement stuff is mostly BS. There is a little bit of data on zinc in various forms, somewhat mixed, but it's not the craziest thing I've ever heard.
Duration of symptoms and plasma cytokine levels in patients with the common cold treated with zinc acetate. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-con... - PubMed - NCBI
Now, is it going to cure you of COVID-19? Probably not...
Well, I can trust *this* Zinc-as-Medicine statement very seriously, but ... it includes the magic words:
* ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
* pubmed
* randomized
* double-blind
* placebo
plus (didn´t read it yet) must also include "Doctors X, Y and Z", University X, etc. plus lots of Statistics, case comparations, plus lots of References.
Not *dissing* Doctors with Pet Theories, I assume they work in good faith, but my problem with that is that they often work with "samples of 1" (I gave Jane Doe Zinc tablets and 1 week later her migraine went away") and not even make the "counter test" (I stopped the Zinc treatment and Migraine came back")
Oh well, hope this nightmare eventually goes away in a few Months and never comes back.
Ritonavir/lopinavir and chloroquine (NOT together) seem to work but you will not find double blind tests because they simply did not have the time to do them.
Doesn't mean it's quackery but it also means that authorities will not say that it definitely does work.

If those medication could help than I have a very very wild guess about Tenofovir/Em (Truvada), the PreP medication.
This is a link to an NPR article. I think the NPR is an American government news source (like the CBC or the BBC). I find the NPR to be a good source of information.
The reason I include this link is because it includes a video of the entire hearing of the recent House Committee on Oversight and Reform. The entire hearing is a waste of time and most of the experts are not worth listening to. But the first speaker is a gem. Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases explains the timeline for a vaccine and countermeasures in the form of therapeutics. This guy pulls no punches and is worth listening to. The director of the CDC and the other medical doctors are not as forthright or as direct. The politicians speak after and they seem to be playing politics and are frustrating to listen to.
The link starts at the swearing in of the witnesses and then Dr. Fauci makes his speech (27:21)
Countermeasures in the form of therapeutics is what this thread seems to be talking about most...

Tony is a smart dude, he really knows his stuff. He was a big name in virology long before he was head of the NIH and he does good science. I like him too; he's not nearly as diplomatic as the other reg heads and has always been bluntly honest and efficient when I've seen him speak at meetings.
So what is your guys thoughts on whether this came from a biological lab or just naturally occurring.
I think your question is fair to ask because it emerged in the only city in China that happened to have a BSL-4 lab and studied coronaviruses. However, there are some good papers that were published that highlight it is unlikely. For one, it doesn't appear to be engineered because my understanding is the changes are not what our models would suggest you make if you wanted to make it more infectious.
This is a good read:
The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2 - nCoV-2019 Evolutionary History - Virological
I can guarantee that this outbreak did not come from a laboratory. For one, this is a new virus. Not that we don't have countless coronaviruses (common colds), but it is obvious and irrefutable that this virus, SARS-CoV-2, is genetically distinct from any known human or animal virus. To say that it came from a lab would mean one of two things: either it was accidentally released or that it is manmade.
To be accidentally released, we would have had to know about it first! And don't ask about some secret government lab or something, genetics doesn't work like that. We sequence literally everything now, and everything comes from somewhere.
I am well versed in the latest in molecular biology, virology, and genetics. Trust me when I say that we simply don't have the scientific knowledge or creativity to "design" a new virus. It can't be done, at least not the next hundred years. I am finding it difficult to describe just how impossible a task that would be. I can go into MUCH more detail if people want to know, but I'll refrain before I write way too much!

I haven't had immunizations in over 30yrs pretty sure.
No flu or anything other than a cough here and there every 5-10 yrs.
I went to Egypt, Peru, Bali, China, Thailand etc.. with no shots ever.
Occasionally when I get a cut, I will use neosporin topical for infection.
Vitamin C and D, the latter of which you get mostly seasonally anyway.
Larger amounts of C in my life was like a switch off of sickness some 30 years ago.
I have exactly xero fears about this. All through the years i've worked outdoors with west nile and everything else that they put on the news. I'll be doing things normally as usual.
Cheers

@DPH: I have a medical background and am finding that the vaccination push has gone too far. There are some instances where vaccination is warranted but by far not all. The side effects of vacination are not talked about and at times create more problems than that the illness itself causes. Big pharma pushing vaccination, brainwashing the doctors with their "studies" and drumming up business in order to make some more bucks.
It has not gone too far; it hasn't gone far enough. Barring pre-existing medical conditions of the patient in question, there is basically no reason at all that vaccinations would not be warranted. The side effects are, in fact "talked about", at great length by many many scientists, doctors, and medical organizers. The side effects, usually immune reactions, are very rare (usually much rarer than the unvaccinated disease) and are multiple orders of magnitude less severe than the disease itself. There are no vaccines available that have side effects or reactions that are anywhere even close.
The effects of vaccinations, their effectiveness, mechanism of action, dosage, time of protection, toxicity, immune stimulation capacity are tediously tested for years in vitro and in vivo in multiple animal models and in humans. The side effects are largely immune activation based, and I'm sorry, you can't target an immune response without activating the immune system to a varying degree. At least not yet as we are on the cusp of being able to design entirely new types of vaccines that don't even use the virus at all!
All schools closed here now, effective immediately.
Earlier today I tried calling to check the info phones about the virus, you just get told to call some other number repeatedly (depending on geographic location) until someone picks up the phone.
I am not an hypochondriac by any means, but seeing as I meet a lot of different people over a vast geographic area every day it is not unlikely that I've been a carrier. My kids are now at home with symptoms and high fever, could be any kind of virus really. The people at the helpline refuse to send people out for testing unless I can say for sure if I've been in contact with people that either have been to the affected countries, or people that have been tested positive for the virus. There's no way for me to say or document that in any way.
I've said it so many times to my wife and everyone, there's no way stopping this. You don't know for sure if you've got a bit more aggressive common cold, some kind of flu or the COVID-19 unless you've been tested.
Government calling for closed schools and kindergardens at this point is IMO much too late to make any significant impact, and if the above guidelines are used to register those affected by the virus, no wonder the numbers are so low.
Plain stupid, no use worrying about this, people that have health issues can die from a regular flu as well. If you get sick what can you do? Get well, get better.
The numbers on infected people are most likely very under-reported. No matter what country you're in. No public government figure will openly go out and admit there's no real control, that's political suicide. Better to take some kind of action to avoid some kind of "blame" stamp, or better yet, use the "blame" stamp on other countries to take focus away from ones own problems.
Sorry about that, not intended as some political post, it is what it is. IMO everyone will get this somehow unless they live under a rock somewhere.

Pushing anything IS going too far..
Do for yourself as you wish, pushing will only be experienced with a similar or greater seeming push-back.
It's not like you need anyone to tell you this, it's as evident as life itself. You just have the opportunity to live in peace, through it. Fear, statistics and its logic will tell you that every single car driver on the road should wear a helmet and protective gear. It saves lives. Crawling over the ground will save people from falls as well.
The answer is to do for yourself and recommend, not push.
The universe is physical laws and spiritual recommendations.
Everything else is futile.

Yup, I went into lurker mode as it's gotten politicized, and it's only taking off, so that ends that.
I also didn't necessarily think the question whether the virus was man-made was problematic, but I totally understand why Cal responded the way he did. The original question could have been framed differently to not leave (hopefully accidental) insinuations, but pretty benign.
To tack on to what Sean wrote on the topic, not many labs have the kind of capability to do that kind of sophisticated work. Much like we can tell which factory specialized materials come from because they have a characteristic contamination signature, there would be fingerprints all over any man-made viruses.

Well, this thread was good. /sigh
I started this thread with the expectation and understanding that some people, many people really, are going to have strongly contrasting opinions on the topic of biology and especially vaccinations. I also said that I draw the line at science denial; but so far, even those with obviously denial-leaning opinions, have been respectful and careful with their wording. I greatly appreciate that and welcome their input as direct antagonism solves absolutely nothing. I would much rather hear the argument, respond with my counter, and hopefully even answer direct questions on the topic from those interested enough to ask.
So far, the main anti-argument has not been that vaccines are ineffective or "bad", but rather that the use of them is exaggerated and/or poorly managed. I vehemently disagree, but as these are qualitative statements, they are opinions and not statements of fact. I will not stand for science denial or "alternative facts", but I welcome differing opinions and implore those who agree and disagree to listen and contribute. Be ready to back up what you say though!
This is from the NY Times.
Our country (USA) has only 2.8 hospital beds per 1,000 people. That’s fewer than in Italy (3.2), China (4.3) and South Korea (12.3), all of which have had struggles. More important, there are only so many intensive care beds and ventilators.
I believe Canada clocks in at 2.5 beds.
Intubators, I'd remember reading that Ontario has some 260 or so of them. I'm not sure if that was extra or 260 total.
If you have more accurate or more complete data I'd be interesting in seeing that, please...
