It's the original Kappa 12, had them for a while. Specs are the same as far as I know. Probably just another batch of production.
Vas/1.44= 112.1/1.44= 77.85 Liter. So what does that tell me?

Nothing so far, you're supposed to sub it for Vas in the SS to see how much lower it makes the net Vb........

Net Vb for the K12 based on Vas/1.44 is 303 liter. That's still on the edge of practical and acceptable for placement.
Net Vb for the W69-1042 based on Vas/1.44 is 103 liter. That's actually a lot smaller.
In hornresp, the K12 sims almost the same as the W69-1042 in my current ~70 Hz test BiB. Surprisingly, the calculated max SPL is also the same. Cone area of the K12 is bigger, but x-max of the W69-1042 is much higher. So I cut a new baffle and mounted the K12. See if the sound is much different.
Sound is indeed a little more dynamic and efficiency considerably higher. It sounds a bit nicer in the higher part of its current passband, so that's a reason to go for the big drivers. Then again, a 100 liter BiB can be built so thin, that it can be slid under the sofa or behind curtains. The sofa position is not ideal (it fires into a corner, but there's a cabinet standing in the way) and I'm not sure how badly that affects performance. The curtain position is quite nice and I don't think performance will be much affected by the relatively thin fabric. I really love how my little arrays work in their BiBs, so my gut feeling is to build the biggest enclosure I can and make the driver as "comfortable" as practical. That would suggest taking the smaller woofer and negotiate hard with the wife. 😉
We'll see. I'm planning to build sometime in september and I'll pick whatever option I'm most interested in then. It's a hobby after all.

Monacor sph-170
Hi!
Just got my hands on a set of Monacor SPH-170 woofers/mids and DT-280 Tweeters.
And I was wondering if anyone know a TL or maybe a backloaded horn or any other construction that works good with this woofers?
There is a version from a swedish site :2.htmlhttp://www.valutronic.se/SQ50-2.html
But I find that a little doll and boring.
So if anyone know something about this or want to look into it I would be very greatful.

Hello Mylingen,
This is the BIB-thread, so as you will expect my advice is to build a BIB with it. 😀
Do you need help getting started? You can use one of the calculators to calculate the basic size and layout. To get you started, the standard volume for this driver would be 265 liters. If going as small as GM would minimally advice (although he would probably always advice to go as close to optimal as you can), that would be 184 liters. Gives some idea of the size.

Hello Ivo.
Thank you for your answear. 265 liters for that smal driver sounds like its not even worth getting started with 🙂
Have a TQWT suggestion on 63 liters that I think will work. Atleast the person who calculated the TQWT think it will work great 🙂
Thanks again for your answear.

Depends on how much bass output you want...........
Actually, in a ~60" high vented column [ML-TL] alignment all you need is ~40 L to get solid output down to Fs assuming the published specs are fairly accurate........

I may have to break out my BIBs from storage and hook them up for a listen. My big pair (currently loaded with Fostex 165k) sound very good but they were lost in the divorce. I have a smaller pair (Fostex 127e) which I hope to finish off nicely and place in the corners of a small room one day. Honestly, their footprint is small especially compared to the large OBs I've been listening to lately.
Is it finally over, I hope? The little floor loaded Fe127E BIBs I auditioned didn't sound good at all in a basement garage app, but really good perched on the ends of its heavy duty 'L' shaped metal work table in the 'sweet spot'. Go figure........
Note that this applies to just the BIB's performance, the drivers were some of the blandest me and its owner had ever auditioned. Sorely needed a super-tweeter [horn or ribbon], at least in a BIB app.

So floor loaded was bad, but elevated and sitting on the work bench was good? (In this application).
I have fostex 166en's and they sound very musical (in a bib) driven by a SET and 22g magnet wire. But can sound dry otherwise.

Correct and at the time thought it was more about the driver being so far below ear height due to being folded than anything else. Thinking back though, I have to wonder if the fairly massive metal work table was very benignly 'coloring' its response.
Don't remember the source, but it was definitely an inexpensive SS one, though rocked pretty good with some cheap, efficient DIY horn/10"? outdoor party speakers, so wasn't horrible sounding.

Thanks for asking GM - the divorce is over (5 years!) but she won't comply with the court order so I had to hire another lawyer to financially separate us. Both of our names are on all of the bank accounts so we both must sign paperwork to release the funds - she won't. I think she's hoping I will run out of money (a real possibility) or die (another real possibility). So I'm divorced but financially entangled. I hope 2016 will be my year to put this to bed.
I haven't listened to the 127e BIBs in a while but I remember enjoying them. My tastes have evolved over time so who knows. I certainly would like to hear them again. I think subwoofer BIBs make a lot of sense.

Yes I really like the bib bass sound. Very tuneful.
But my bib's for ~6" driver used three sheets of plywood. I would be refrigerator size if I wanted a 12" or 15" bass driver.
I'm thinking of cobbling together a secondary system using pro drivers to play classic rock.
Debating on a tapped horn for bass. Not sure how those may compare with a bib sound.

GM,
In post 127 (ages ago) you wrote about a straight MLTL for the RS 40-1354. I have some of those laying around, and was hoping you might still have the 'plans' available.

Paul

I was afraid it might not be the thing to do, but a very close friend was already in the same 'boat' when I learned of your 'trial' except for him having a 2 yr old daughter that he's just lost the custody battle for and as for the rest he's been down your 'road' with accounts/property, paperwork, etc., and now visitation non-compliance, etc., compounded by her moving several states away where he can't afford to see her except a couple of times a year.
Regardless, hope you can get some justice, it seems to have flipped 180 deg from the days when the wife didn't have a chance in court. Maybe someday it will find some ~fair middle ground, especially since all decisions should actually be based on what's best when children are involved as they claim.
Yeah, as I've periodically posted, all my large pipe horns were vented and limited to a 500 Hz XO max and most were to just 120 Hz simply because it was the only digital XO I knew how to make.

Just depends as they are very flexible alignments. Mine were certainly large since the drivers I used typically had a ~15-30 ft^3 Vas and tuned to 20-27 Hz.
If you want to experiment, you can block off the driver cutout of an existing BIB and relocate it to the internal baffle board and voila! A basic TH.
Sound wise, never have auditioned a 'true' BIB, but have some of DSL's products at Gainesville, Ga. and they remind me of large compression horns, though if fired at the ceiling same as a BIB I imagine if it was limited to two octaves, same BW and next to no damping same as the TH the only obvious difference would be the TH could play a lot louder like if the BIB was a dual driver alignment.
That said, depending on the driver you use, the TH would normally be tuned different from the BIB, so no direct comparison could be made.

Hmm, they're locked up in a damaged HD and the forum I posted them on is long gone and not archived, but I might still have the 'napkin' quality sketch I did of it. For sure, they're still playing virtually all day long, every day as stereo FM radio, OTA TV speakers ~60 mi away.
FWIW, back when he lived near me I tried CSS FR125S, EL70 and one other similar driver I don't remember now and even though I tried different tunings, I can't think of any reason why the other designs for these drivers wouldn't work just as well. We both preferred the modded 1354s to these, though with a bit of tweaking I imagine the others would be superior overall.
Anyway, just found this write-up that includes some driver tweaks by doing a bit of 40-1354 image browsing. They were obviously unfinished; now sport 't' square tripod stands with spikes, a nice semi-gloss water clear finish and the driver's polyfil sheet is framed/covered with a ~matching double knit speaker 'grill', ditto over the vents: http://myhifisite.50megs.com/gm/tower.html
For mass loading, he had some tins filled with pennies that when divvied up into two tins weighted ~25 lbs/ea, so recommend at least this much/speaker.

edit: this really needs to be added to an existing 1354 thread or make a new one.
