G.Kennedy - your BIBs look amazing! I want to see the finished speakers!
A small listening room has popped up in my basement over the weekend. A bit more elbow grease and it may actually turn out nicely.

I thought the BIBs might overpower the room but they fit well without being intrusive. Tall, slim and in the corners works very well in small rooms.

Tall, slim and a good cook is what I'm looking for...
Jeff, a dedicated listening room - you are one lucky bastid!
Now, before you lay in provisions to survive a prolonged stay, go and beg, steal or borrow a carpet (the thickest you can find) to hang on the wall behind your listening armchair. If ever I find the plan of Schroeder diffusors to defuse the side walls I'll let you know.
Envying you,
Pit

Jeff, rather than nervous, I'd think she'd be grateful that you'll be out of her hair after the kids go to bed.
While ours are all growed up and out of the house, aside from the occasional special Sunday morning wake-up, Sue is still happiest when I'm either watching TV or listening to tunes in the basement.

Re: Sir, I beg to differ
is that like "boat fulls" (or is that boats-full?)
We should get a list from SY on matching varietals and vintages to specific musical genres......it could save us a lot of experimentation.

the cost of some misbegotten experiments would have bought me galleons of wine.

Nice one Jeff. Looks great.
One thing that might be worth experimenting with: DIY Roomlenses.

Frankly, I rarely find myself agreeing with Jon or Thorsten, but in this case, it's an interesting little experiment in the DIY field. Sometimes the results can be downright startling -I've heard a big multiway setup that ended up with a designer soundstage -make it deeper, wider, narrower, move performers... madness.

Hi chrisb – wifey said she may ‘do things’ to keep me upstairs after kiddies are asleep rather than leave her all alone. Seems a dedicated listening room (which is really just a spare room I called a ‘gym’ of sorts – never worked out in it just kept some dusty weights and an unused bench press in there – may be a great thing to have. I did hit the speed bag to get one or two minutes of exercise in on occasion. Now I must re-locate the speed bag or it sits inside the BIB opening at the top.
Blankets or carpet on the rear wall… I have a blanket I picked up in Mexico that might look festive and add some color to the room. I can’t wait to further treat the room. Thanks Pit, GM and Scott for the suggestions.
I may even bring my dad’s unused turntable down there and listen to my old albums.
Peace,
Godzilla

Jeff,

Oh oh - more provisions I say - once you start you'll never stop. If can do, hang that blanket some 4" off the wall, you get twice the echo damping.
Scott,
Thorsten might sometimes sound somewhat bonkers, but he is an old hand. He learned the job when East Germany was East Germany and they had to make do with whatever they could lay hands on - some of his crazier ideas can only be explained by the kind of "gut feeling" he had to develop to help the firm survive. Besides - someone who talks as pretty a lady as his into marriage can't be completely daft, right? BTW, I had a bit of musing about the HUOA - even if your sim of it gives me green light, and if ever I can find enough particle board, getting them out of the basement workshop might be a logistical challenge
Cheers all,
Pit

Whenever we shot films on locations, we would go for the ceiling first. We could reduce a much greater amount of reflection of a room by hanging blankets and such across the ceiling. Then if that was not enough, we would go for the vertical surfaces. This was for recording in a room so I don't know if it would have the same effect for playing music in a room. Cheers.
Good one, djn (is there a name behind the netname?)
Treating everything but leaving the ceiling in as-is condition...have done a bit of photographing, so I know about headaches.

Hi....
finally I decided to build definately a BIB with my FE207E.
Still my biggest Problem is the dimension of this monolith ;-)
OK...could anyone (please) simulate a FE207E-BIB with a linelength of max. 150" 🙄
Would be great and would maybe make one or two others think about building one ;-)

Done .... but not finished.
Yesterday I found the time to install the bottoms ... then redid the mount on the baffle to hide the screws. One is perfect, the other ... I have six holes I will need to fill.
For a few days, they will be up and running, then I will dissassemble to give a final sanding and finish the wood. The red dye is coming by the end of the week, so ... a project for next weekend.
For now, I only have them hooked up to a $10 thrift store all in one, and they still sound great. Plenty of bass. My girlfriend can't believe all that sound is coming from one speaker. Lots of range.
Really great on acustic stuff ... Jose Gonzales, MTV unplugged stuff !!!!!
Waiting on a Bottlehead amp to complete the project, so still some time until I can call this truely finished. We are going to slide some furniture around to accomadate a better listening area.
more later .......

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Tip -get some 20AWG enamelled copper magnet wire from the local Rat Shack or similar (Maplins in the UK). Costs marginally less than nothing. Solid-core twin & earth mains cable is another favourite if you want something thicker.
I've been reading up on acoustic room treatments and may start another thread on it but before i do i wanted to ask the following:
http://www.azpartsmaster.com/shopazp/Ceiling+Tile+-+#704A+(CT704A).html
Will ceiling tile like the above work?
I can get some and frame it out on my walls in key places.
Also, i found this article very interesting:

Can't wait for my sons to help me locate reflection spots over the weekend.

I've been thinking of getting a finish on my BIB's now that the weather should be warming up. Of course, 7" of snow was originally forcast today (down to 2" predicted now) so I'm not in an enormous hurry to carry 'em outside. I've been thinking all along about doing a baffle like yours G. Kennedy. I love the edge of Baltic Birch. Since we don't precisely know the upper frequency roll off of the horn, is the ideal width of the supra baffle just a WAG?

FE168EZ BIB - where to from here?
Well my FE168EZ BIBs are sounding better and better responding well to tweaking the front end (CD/amp). But I feel the urge!!
I would like to build an 8" equievelant of the 168 BIB but there is no easy choice as far as I can see. I really love the Fostex sound, I guess what I am after is the 168 with lower bass and not lose any of the magic.
So what are the choices?
- FE208EZ with super tweeter (expensive)
- FE206ESR (doesn't seem to be in the same league as the Sigmas, may need mods))
- Hemp FR8 (lower QTS and somewhat mixed reception - may need mods)
- ?
So guys - any thoughts on my dilema?
Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris, I am starting a pair using Alpine 170 car speakers. I have the drivers and the wood so what the hell. I would normally build with MDF but I have a stack of very straight 1x12 pine boards that want to be a speaker cab. Cheers.

I would hang on abit, put some mileage on your 168's, enjoy the slow improvement, and meantime, there are about to be some very interesting offerings from Tone Tubby, genuine HempTone(tm) 4.5, a wideband 6.5, wideband whizzerless 8, an 8 inch bass/sub driver, some car speakers, and some other stuff. I heard a few of these, including the 10 inch Alnico wideband guitar speaker, using contouring you can wrench an almost unbelievable amount of treble out of that thing, the 6.5 is VERY impressive, and I have a pair of the 4.5 playing right now. These have Nd magnets, and are serious little fellows. I am going back soon to listen to the wideband 8, which was fantastically well implemented with some sort of new ribbon tweeter, and it was to die for. THIS little combo, in a BIB would be absolutely stunning. So I say, wait awhile. Mo' betta tings to come.
