Tang Band has a new line of coax drivers for point source. From 3" to 8" drivers.
The 6.5 and 8" driver sport a funky surround... and even have a designer grill over the tweeter.

Interesting. And potentially promising. I have some reservations about the tweeter response graph which seems remarkably better than anything anyone else (including Seas 😉 ) seem to be able to manage. Will keep an eye on these though, they're not without interest.
For fun, I plugged the 6.5" into TL sim, and it came up with great possibilities!
A narrower and longer version works well, but even something a little "stubby" looks great. Only 1m tall, 700cm2, and a small vent.
F3 at about 28Hz!
If the tweeter sounds good, this could be a killer mini tower!

Really interesting, and reasonably priced (186 € at bpa)! The cone breakup of the woofer looks really controlled as well. Can't really play above 100 dB, but that's alright for most people.
Just putting the W6 in a 20 l vented box tuned to 45 Hz gives a F3 of about 40 Hz.
Who will build the first one?

Too bad there is no 5 inch version. Would have been fun to try as a drop in for my current W5-2143 based speakers.
Interesting indeed - any ballpark on distribution dates / pricing? As the info linked above may be very preliminary, I note that while the photos clearly show XO components on the smaller two, the absence of mention of specific recommended crossover frequency on the 6.5 or 8" - other than the "to perform from 800 up to 40KHz - leave those two open to huge amount of experimentation.
I'm thinking these will be either a raging success, or memorably underwhelming ?

Being a bit of a coax fan, I would like them to be good. Providing the price is right, they could be very interesting. Thing is, they're going to have to offer something that, for e.g., these don't:
H1353-08/06 T18REX/XFC
And at the pricier end
E0051-04/06 C16N001/F
You'll have to do your own filter for both the TBs & Seas drivers though. Which is where much of the system voicing resides.

Yeah I actually have the older H1144 version of the Seas T18REX and it's a really good driver when the crossover is done right. I was initially scared of the Seas Coaxes because of the weird FR on the datasheet, but it turns out they sound great and very revealing. It would be cool if TB get this right! I think the 8" version would make a great setup for low-power Triode amps due to it's sensitivity.
They show lots of promise for small HT systems - particularly for centre channels that are often constrained for space. Sure, getting the XO exactly right will be an exercise, but those networks generally don't take up tons of space.
Also will give the minidsp etc / active aficionados lots of fun.

It's a little weird that the frequency response of the tweeter is identical in the 6.5" and the 8" versions... I wonder how the off-axis response looks like. The surround and shallow cone looks like it could produce nice polars.

I think we might all need a new hobby. 😱
These coaxial drivers are getting so good, that there really isn't much more to do!
This is effectively a three-way with a small footprint.

What the hell, I ordered the W6.
I traced the curves and extrapolated to 20 Hz (for tweeter), anyone feel like giving the XO a shot? I'm new to passive XO:s, what XO-point should I aim for? 2 kHz? I'm guessing that the coaxial part enables a higher XO than for a usual 2-way, but the polars should decide I suppose.

There's a suggested enclosure and crossover posted on the Tang Band website for the W6:
SUG2-25 - 6.5" 2 Way Coaxial Bookshelf Enclosure Suggestion - TB SPEAKER CO., LTD.
Looks like a Kef LS50. Interesting curved port tube....

Hmmm, I'm not typically a fan of coaxial drivers but I have to admit the 8" version looks to have a lot of potential. The coax has to be crossed over at about 2kHz because the pattern from the 8" cone will start to narrow there. Would need to see the HD/IMD profile of the tweeter to know for sure. To that I would add a woofer to create a 3-way system, crossing maybe around 350Hz to a sealed 10" in a tall cabinet as narrow as possible, with the coax as high as possible in the baffle and the woofer just below that. The reasoning for adding the woofer is that you do not want the cone of the coax to move because it is the waveguide for the tweeter, so it should not be operated to low frequencies. A 10" woofer can deliver relatively good bass in a large floorstander without having to resort to a "subwoofer" driver and will keep the baffle narrow, which helps with imaging.
The woofer has a Neo-slug magnet! Individual slugs like that of the W8 full-ranges, and the underhung full-ranges like the W3-1878.
I'm actually second-guessing myself about what I want to do with the W8-2096 underhung 8" woofers I have now. I am still considering the Corundum 25mm Peerless tweeters, but this new driver really looks good!

Wolf
