Hi Bach On,
Get well soon. They used to call that a boxer fracture (?), mine is on the right hand. With some luck and a little rest it should heal well, but it needs to be treated as soon as possible.

Regards,
They put a cast on it Friday. Looks like no surgery will be needed. Weekly X-rays to check the alignment. 6 to 8 weeks is typical recovery.
Could have been worse, but I'm still not happy about it.

I can't believe it! We old timers are just using REW and laptops to check our speaker enclosures while Bach On is using X-rays.Weekly X-rays to check the alignment.

That's right! You guys need to keep up with technology.
I just hope the pixie dust doesn't leak out of my tweeters before my hand heals.

Don't worry it's floobie dust.
At least you timed the break for when your console was gone.

I prefer MRI's and CT scans for calculating transfer function phase.😀
Best wishes on your recovery Bach On!

Hmmmm,
Use an MRI coil for an active field coil for a really LARGE subwoofer. 😛
Just wind a coil to fit inside the MRI coil and attach a huge cone, I would suggest a satellite dish used by the NSA for starters.
My work here is done 😎
Went to doctor again yesterday. I saw a different doctor who agreed with me that the cast they had put on me might help bone heal better, but it would cause the finger muscles and ligaments to become stiff and/or atrophy. Thus, the recovery period would actually be longer after the bone healed. So the cast came off. YAYYYYY!
Now I have a protective splint for the hand. And the broken little finger is taped to the adjacent ring finger. I'm encouraged to work them in tandem for the next two or three weeks to get increased mobility. They X-rays show the gap is very slight. This is a minimalist approach that has at least some risk of the bone healing slightly crooked, but the doctor seems to feel the chances are reasonably good that this won't be the case. He seems to feel the recovery period will be about six weeks - or less.
The Artisan Sound Engine is going to be installed on Thursday. There were some issues with how the MIDI equipment was originally setup on the console. We had to get clarification from the manufacturer on how to address this. I'm hopeful the solution can be applied as the sound engine is installed.
It's at that point that I'll find out if all my planning and effort pays off. I can't do the intricate work of replacing those caps on the Rolls pre amp until my hand gets better. So I may have to temporarily use that 12 band equalizer for the low bass if more signal input is needed.
Many thanks to all the people in this forum who have provided advice and encouragement. I'm going to see if I can make a recording and then can figure out a way to post it here for anyone interested to be able to hear the results.
My messed up flipper will delay when I can play it for church. But I'm still excited!!!

Any pieces for 8-fingered organists? B.
Maybe. But I think they are all pretty ugly.

OK his is kinda open ended...
The organists or the pieces?
Mark Andersen came yesterday. It seems we're having a comedy of errors on the Peterson equipment. He had talked to them and they sent him what they said was needed. But it ended up that the daughterboard was the wrong one. He called Peterson, for over two hours but all their lines were busy - even the FAX number. We figure phone system trouble.
Got the sound module installed in our equipment rack. But they have changed the output cables. I had ordered eight 1/4 inch to XLR patch cords, based on the pictures on their website. But NOOOOO. They've switched to RCA outs. So I just ordered 8 new cables.
My assignments are to get the new cables. And I'm to wire up a 10K pot in a project box to mount under the keyboards. It will work with the theremister to tune the electronics. He'll come back when he gets the replacement parts - right after Labor Day. He figures we'll be operational in a couple of hours.
We had ordered the 16 MIDI channel - 29 samples version of the Artisan sound engine. That was their newest latest-greatest. Mark said he has included some extra samples. We can only load 29 at a time because of our license, but it provides more options to choose from. I had complained that ordering particular voices without being able to hear them was a weak point in the order process. I wasn't snotty about it, but I did tell him that. I think he remembered it and that's why he threw in the extra samples.
I can tinker with the Artisan software. But nothing will actually play until we get the Peterson components installed and connected.
I'm pleased that all the work I did ahead of time turned out to be correct. He said it had made his job much easier. Now if we can solve the Peterson troubles AND get my finger to heal, maybe we can actually get some music out of this sucker!!!

I guess the reason people can't preview the samples, is for possible theft ? But i agree, there should be some way of doing so, either you go to them, or vice versa.
You should charge them for the wasted leads 😉
Sounds like your hand is improving 🙂

Sorry to hear of your frustrating events.
Basically, you really want to put a flat signal into the speakers to see what comes out at the pews. You can't fashion a system unless you have a sense of the parts. So I'd do testing before a lot of gizmos are introduced to the path.
About the 10k pot, I hope somebody is sure that simply sticking a resistance in the path is correct.
Mighty important with controls to get the ergos right, esp. if it is something used often, on-fhe-fly, or which should be re-set to certain settings recurrently. Vast choices and horrid bad choices depending on your requirements. (Also, be sure you know what "taper" means before ordering one.)

Ben - there's an external interface board mounted next to the sound engine. It seems to take the network cable that connects to the console. I ran the network cable from the organ console to the rack closet just before I broke my finger. That interface board is also where the thermister cable connects. This board then connects to the sound engine. The thermister will be mounted to one of the metal pipes in the chamber using two conductor wires I've already run. I'm using heatsink compound for a good thermal connection between the pipe and the thermister. Mark says the thermister can do adjustments for roughly plus or minus five degrees F. Outside that temperature range, it may not be able to adjust enough.
But there is another circuit board that gets mounted in the rconsole. The other end of the network cable connects there. It also contains the MIDI connection to the Peterson system. That board also has connections for the pot. I'm to put a 10 K potentiometer in a project box. Mark left some three conductor shielded cable for this purpose. The plan is to mount the project box under the keyboards. I can then adjust the tuning pot from the organ bench. The shielded cable will connect between this interface box and the pot. He says the pot can be used to override the thermister. Time will tell.
All three of the terminals on the pot are used. There are terminals on that interior board for the wiper and the outer two end terminals of the pot. We can also connect a rotary switch with the pot. This could be used to alter the samples that are assigned to particular tabs. Mark says we probably should wait to do this until after we have the system running well.
The system we bought is their newest package. It just started shipping in July. It is supposed to use a Graphical User Interface for configuring the system. But the actual communication from the GUI is saved in a configuration file. Mark says the GUI system has some bugs in it. They have a programmer who is working to address these bugs. So for the immediate future, we must use the configuration file. That's a disappointment. But having been involved with new systems, it isn't shocking that there would be some bugs to work out. I'm just hopeful they will exterminate the bugs quickly.
I'll keep posting progress reports. We're closer. But I won't be passing out cigars for a couple of weeks.

Yes. Security is the primary reason. And I can understand that.
No. He gave us extra samples. That is compensation enough.
It is improving. The little finger is still sore and very stiff. I'm starting to move it a bit. But I can sense progress. But I'm at least two or three weeks out - or more - from even a rudimentary ability to play.

Hi Bach On,
Good to hear you are healing, and making progress. With the extra time you may be able to swap the capacitors in the preamp yet.

Keep the pinky moving!
Even if it hurts.
A little movement will help in the long run.
I broke mine in 1993.
Sounds like a similar break to yours. Not in the finger but in the bone in the palm of the hand above the little finger.
It is pretty much a non issue now.
But for about six months or so it was some tender!

Oliver - you guys don't forget anything. Do you?
I'll see what I can do.
Mark - yes. The break is in the metacarpal area. I've taken the splint off. It was uncomfortable and it was making it more difficult for me to move my fingers. The swelling is gradually going down. The fourth (ring) finger is moving better, but it still is a bit sore for making a fist.
The pinky digit is where the break took place. Almost any movement (bending) causes pain. But I'm trying to do a bit more each day.
This wasn't high on a list of things I wanted to have happen. But I'm confident I'll get through it.
