Tannoy 3134 DC ZM-induced purchase, service and repair

DIY'd 21mm BB GRF cabs.
Looking great.

The 12" CPA blew us away.
Nearly as much deep bass as the 15" drivers.
Better mid bass, upper mid bass, mids / HF too!
I seen somewhere something similar to your comment. I chosen the 12” ones because I have no space for the 15” ones.

I got mine for cheap too, entire build under 700€(cpa12, new enclosures and some parts for the crossover). Wondering how? I have nice friends 🙂

@zm

I have to ask…did you have a problem with the earlier open baffle Tannoy project with helper woofer I remember that you covered in wall paper for more WAF?

I’m just wondering if you feel MLTL is ultimately better sonically or if it is a decision based on a variety of factors like simplicity, WAF etc?

Would you do OB again say if you had special sexy OB woofers, no space concerns etc.?

OB , in bass department, needs either big baffles or biamping in case of smaller baffles

what I had - pics on my blog, was rare case of both OBs bein practically in corners and - combined with funny bench/table in between - working more as H baffles than open baffles, so I was in situation of even attenuating bass helpers

as situation in living room changed, OBs going to opposite - long - wall, I had a choice of either going biamp, or going to proper MLTL for "only" 15 Tann, so I can stay with single amp

too old and too lazy for any sort of biamp

my line-up of preference, when speaking of speaker "boxing":

1. horn
2. OB
3. MLTL

each demanding own set of compromises, and each fulfilling own set of compromises

I took a look yesterday night. Interesting to see same thing ZM wrote to me some time ago about the cpa12 crossover being the best of them all.
With the Newman compensation it’s even better.
Yesterday I ordered the missing parts to finish the new crossover, I had only the stuff for the compensation network.
I managed to get (the last two in stock) 0.22dcr/2mm inductors for the woofer, originals are ~0.35dcr/1.5mm(the dcr of the test leads was accounted for).

So in awhile I will sell the original cpa12 crossovers ..if somebody needs them.

Progress is made with my tannoys 3589, I think
Just a few more rounds on the surrounds to get them completely free of the glue,
the replacement tweeter has passed customs and should arrive soon
repaired the hole on the conus (need to make that same color as rest of the cone) (Thanks again to the Tannoys Master ZM)
repaired the surround using the cloth+glue solution of Zen Mod

A question, the cone of one seems not completely centered. There is no friction of the coil in the gap I think, using low frequency test tones. Just leave it or try to center them? Is that done by loosening the bolts on the spider? Thanks beforehand for advice and tips

I was thinking at this layout for the crossover. Will fix everything with zip ties.
2 zip ties for each of the small components and 4 for the big inductor.
Should I use glue too on the bottom of each ?

A bit clear for sure. You can easily notice it on voices. The soundstage is a bit wider too.
The second thing you can easily notice is the better control of the woofer.
I think I pushed around 2w through them and the bass was already punching deep in my chest.
Good thing that I didn’t move the speakers to replace the crossovers because else I would have said its because I changed their position.

For now I listened to them through a no global feedback lu1014 amp that has the front end modular.
Tomorrow I plan to change the front end to the above amp with one that will add some nfb and will give even better control and a different sound experience.
Tomorrow it will be a lot of fun.
