Hey guys
Now that Jaswant Singh has upped the baggage allowance limits from 12k to 25k, in his interim budget announced in Parliament today it's well worth asking someone coming from abroad to bring your choice of drivers across..The rate of duty if you cross the limit has also been dropped from 50% to 40%.

I have a Jamshedpur connection too-I was at XL from 73-75, and made a trip there this October, met Ashok, played at Beldih and Golmuri with my sons, and can attest to what Angshu said in one of his emails-it's still a great place, though a bit off the regular route.

You guys got co-operative relatives and friends. I would feel too obliged to do that given i travel often enough.
....besides i save my allowance for things like car seats, stroller, and toys/books/clothes for my son, good marmalade/boysenberry/blackberry preserves, coffee (Kona from pete's in SF or Hula pie from Bad *** in Hawaii), harabnero and basil cheese, goose liver pate, short bread cookies, biscotti, chanterlelle/porcini/shitake/matsutake and various other food stuff, kitchen wares and house wares.
BTW we are noew entitled to 2 bottles of booze per person. too bad my son is not eligable for this luxury.
given the recent changes i feel india is getting more friendly to stay in than most other countries. now if they could oonly do something about the damn traffic.
I did not get ca chance to liste to the woofers (IM in propes setup). Can I give a sine from my PC and record what is played by the speaker (with a MIC) and then run FFT on the recorded waveform and find out what other harmonics are present. How much will be the success in measureing the distortion this way.
I would say try listening to it before measuring it.🙂
As far as the measurement goes, a condensor mic capsule should be more than sufficient, provided u have a decent one.
these types generally have flat responses. but it would be a nice idea to check, if it really can record those low frequencies. As far as playing back a sine, recording and analysing the FFT goes, if u plan to run spot frequecies it will be a tedious task and u might miss out as the resonances are very sharp. best method would be to get Speaker workshop or something similar and use the burst/MLS in it to measure the response. Further the peaks and dips u may see can also be the result of some cancellations additions from nearby wall floor etc..I'vent really tried out this. So will better leave that to the experts to comment on, how to differentiate cone breakup resonances from the interference.
I also found coated BPL woofers and silkies (it looked quite good, and resembled Dayton silky). I will try them and keep you posted
Those BPL's, if they are genuine, should be real good. I think i need to visit globe. 😀
I intend to try a TL system with Bolton 8". Can you guys team up with me on this.
Sure... 😎 😀 🙂
Why bolton..any reasons, why cant we try this new ones.
BTW, i'm getting a copy of Dickasons "Loud speaker design cookbook". Is on its way.. Is taking a looooong path to reach me..US-> UK-> switzerland-> blr. 😛 Expected sometime first week of march. So If not me we'll get some help from dickason..keep me posted about ur plans. And where are u put up in blr.
Also...For TL modelling try doing some expts with MJK's mathcad sheets...should be nice to start with...!

thanks for the offer George..

when are u travelling next...

I didnt read the fine print will see it tomorrow, but todays Economic Times hinted that children would be entitled to some allowances-maybe not 2 X 1 litre though! That's a bit too much to expect friom the topiwallahs. Still 25k is a decent amount I think.

Hi Ajju
Dont know dates as yet, hope before March 31st to the US, though there could be a Sri Lanka trip this month-unfortunately I dont think SL is a great place for buying drivers! I have a 12 inch driver from Lambda waiting for the last 12 months at Nashville, couldnt bring it with me last time. It's too heavy (23 lbs) to ship to India, freight will be a deal killer.
I have some really nice music that I got recently, you may want to come by any day after the Bryan Adam's show and listen to it. One especially is very good, it's a South African group called Ladysmith, they have sung with Paul Simon if any of you guys have heard them on the"Negotiations and Love Songs" album.
For you out of towners, Bryan Adams is expected to pull upwards of 30,000 for his show. I just picked up 6 tickets for a bunch of my son's classmates who are coming down from Madras this weekend.

Its me again
Hi ajju,
I already have two IMW series 8" poly woofers and donot want to buy new ones untilI put these to good use. TL is one alignment I want to try. If the specs are not good for a TL system I would like some electronic correction/equalisation. I do not know whether this is possible in the first place. If I do get compelling reasons to go aheadthen it will be fairly easy to mould the TL cabinet from concrete.
Is it possible for you to lend the Dickason book so that I could get a photostat of the same.
Hi Vivek and ajju,
By being in the same city it is feasable (logistically) to come together and do some experiments. We can get the cost of experimenting down and can help find other's mistakes. Do let me know whether it is possible to come together and carry on with our experiments.
Regards,
Goldy

BPL info
Hi Vivek,
This shop is right opposite to OM Electronics. You can see the drivers in the showcase outside the shop.

u get Bryan Adams we get Ian Anderson and Hari Prasad Chaurasia. my wife and i had to give up going as my wife's sister was flying into town the same day and it would have been very diffcult to do both with a 22 months old in tow

still waiting to see if the delhi concert will happen or not...
...btw, I'm new to india and enjoying reading through some of the sugegstions in this thread.
😎
Goldy, there are a couple of shops selling cassettes and CDs. Is the shop somewhere there? And what colour are the cones? Any idea about the price?
Fernmeister:
I was under the impression that he would be performing at both places! Anyway, FYI the tickets here are priced at 400 and 600.
So, which part of the globe are you from?
Navin:
There were some very good shows here recently-Chaurasia performed at the Bangalore Habba festival-I went for it-he was excellent. My wife saw Amjad Ali Khan the previous day, and enjoyed his show as well. L Subramaniam and Zakir Hussain performed at another music fest and this pat weekend was the Vasantahabba at Nrityagram, where some well known musicians should have performed. Thanks to Sunil who is also on this forum, I got to hear some excellent fusion stuff after many many years-Shakti, Jan Garbarek etc..Just loved it!

Did you get to spend time in those river boats. Couple of years ago Yogita and I spent a week in one of them near trivandrum. Mosquitoes were a menace though. Thankfully, we had that locally brewed magic stuff to fend off them pests.

tickets are 500 and 750 here, but there have been problems with the venue. as of monday the concert was about to be called off, then they shifted venue, but today's papers are saying the local authorities have still not given the go ahead. we'll see...
...i was born in latin america to swiss parents, grew up in australia and have spent the last five years in the UK.
BTW, is there anywhere in India that does decent mail order for DIY electronics components? I have found RS have a distributor in India, but are there others?
