Dayton-Morel 3-way Design pic

I have just finished this design, the driver compliment includes the Dayton RS225 8",Morel MDM-55 Midrange,Morel MDT-37 tweeter. The crossover points are 700/5khz(12db/Oct).One of the design goals was to minimize baffle diffraction effects, hence the small driver enclosure.I will be converting the Passive crossover to an active design in the upcoming months,The amplifiers will be National Semi LM3886's in a Parallel configuration. All comments are welcome. Dayton Reference Series

Hey everybody. Im pretty new to DIYAUDIO.com. Ive been doing car audio since i was 15 and i just recently decided to tackle a home audio speaker.

I thought it would be a good challenge to design and build a set of towers. Since this was a first project, i was very frugle with my budget. i decided no more than $100 for drivers. I liked how daytons' RS180S-8's looked in winisd and i had heard good things about the DAYTON DC28F-8 tweeter.

The enclosure is around 1ft^3 tuned to 35 hz. i dont have the means necessary to measure it but winisd shows it should be flat down to about 38hz. I used a 2'' diameter port but im thinking about changing it to a 3". Would this give me any more bass output? It has fantasic low end but only at certain places in the room. Ive moved them all around to try and find a sweet spot but its very difficult. If anyone can help me out with this it will be much appreciated.

All in all i am very impressed with the speakers. It sounds great with old Rock such as Rush, ACDC, Peter Frampton, Van Halen (to name a few), and sounds really good with all the Ska style music i listen to such as Reel Big Fish, Less than Jake.

One day i get around to finishing the speakers but until then here's a pic.

My Orion Mutants

Sorry guys, I've been having a tough time posting here. I was unfamiliar with the site, plus I think my T1 provider (sagonet) stinks. Constant problems. Here is a link (I hope) to some more pics. My schedule is extremely busy these days - hence my slow response. I think my Norton Internet Security causes problems also. But, here we go -

Hope it works. I'll post again soon.

More info

Oh yes, I'm new here, so I'm also under moderation - can't see if what I post is working. Oh well.
Yes - the design is based on the Orion. I'm using the XLS 12's instead of the 10's. The tweeter is a XT-19 mounted in a constant directivity waveguide. The pics (if they work) should help. Older pics, but you get the idea. DCX2496 crossover - 1.3k @ 48db/oct. Would NOT work without the waveguide. I prefer the sound to the Millenium. My personal taste. The dispersion of the XT-19 in the uppermost octaves is superior to the Millenium. The Directivity of the Mid and Tweeter at crossover are MUCH closer. Off-axis measures better as a result. I'm sure SL will make my tweeter/waveguide design Revison 2 any day now😀 (I think I just inserted a smiley face here, but again I'm new).
As far as XM goes - it is the single best pc. of electronics I have ever spent money on. Why? Because, just like in the commercial (with that guy in his car inside his office), I listen to it on my way to work-in my car, at work, on my way home, at home......well you get the picture. It gets used EVERY day, unlike my projector, my Orions, etc. I like a huge variety of music, and it delivers! I was an early subscriber, since I was sick of listening to the awful crap on the radio. I pay about $20 a month for 2 receivers. One shuttles between my car and the office, the other stays at home in the boombox. I am going to upgrade to the Polk home receiver eventually, since its supposed to sound superior to the Delphi units. I dont care much about the inferior sound quality - its not half bad, because I get to hear so much music I otherwise would not. For critical listening its CD's or SACD's for me. Cheers

Front speakers are Cerwin Vega Re20's 8" 2-ways. I will be swapping out different drivers this summer when i have the cash. (any suggestions in the $25-30 per driver range?)

I really dont care much for the sound of my cerwin fronts. at higher volumes, they are alright, but for movies and games they are a bit harsh for my taste. $25 is more of my current price range, I would likely spend closer to $60/driver in the summer and build a new crossover. I dont know if it'd be possible to just modify the CV x-over to make them sound better. Maybe a tweeter swap for a lower x-over point?

as for the foam, lol, I just had some eggcrate sheets laying around and i figured I'd throw em on the walls because it can get pretty echo-y and the walls are thin in this appartment.
