My current system
I made a set of towers a few years ago. Standard ported design using bass box pro. Each driver has its own sealed enclosure. The whole speaker cabinet then has a 25mm (1") mdf outer with an oak veneer finish. They look great. Drivers are 8" Jaycar response units from about 10years ago. The sub driver in the bottom is a 4ohm car audio speaker. Each cabinet has a dedicated 250watt rms amplifier just for the sub. The rxv673 has a trigger output, which I used to trigger a midget, to turn the external sub woofer amplifier modules on. The tweeter/woofer use an 18db/octave home made crossover. Amplifier at the moment is a Yamaha rxv-673, but I'm about to pull it to bits. The power output of these new amplifiers is just no where as good as the older units. One look at the transformer inside tells me it's probably good for 100w/channel at best. I'm in the process of building a set of 175w rms amplifiers to be used as the main channel for this amplifier. So I'll be removing the main audio stage, and supplying this as an output to an external amplifier. I'm doing this so I can retain the Dolby surround, and all the cool Ethernet features this amplifier offers.
All in all the sound is great. Tight bass response, very balanced sound (without the sub turned on).

What kind of midbass/midrange is that ? Looks nice.
Great crossover design too.. seems to be very thoughtful, inductors nicely aligned not to disturb eachother.

I just finished a 9.2 liter version of the Speedster. I re-purposed an old cabinet from an abandoned project. I wanted to use the cabinets as the veneering came out really nice. Veneer is raw anigre over an MDF followed with Watco natural Danish Oil and Minwax paste wax on top.
I had to make new baffles so I picked up 2 IKEA APTITLIG bamboo cutting boards $7.99 each. Dimensions are 11" x 17.75" x 5/8" - the website says it's 3/4" but it is not. These are nice because the end grain is vertical not horizontal and they are dead flat, no bowing like some boards with horizontal/flat end grain.
I tuned this to around 55Hz with a 1.5" x 3.65" port. Light stuffing. I'm really happy how they turned out and how they sound. Bass is really nice and not overpowering. The Fountek is great with nice detail and no harshness at all. Paul hit a home-run with these.

I've been enamored with the Altec speakers of old since I was a kid, and worked for several of the last years gathering A-7 components for some type of build. Because of limited space, I needed corner cabinets, and ended up building a couple of striped-mahogany veneered 6.5 cubic foot bass reflex cabs with matching horn cabinets up top.
