Hello mermoz,

First, thanks.

Second, this new trio is arrogant (it seems like Powell do this against it's own will), no doubt. And ignorant, I think. But I definitely don't agree with these comparisons. Simply, they are two different worlds. However, “we can kill 1000 their citizens to protect 10 (or one) our”, really doesn’t have much with the fight_against_the_terrorism.

No, they don't jest. They're European. I spend a lot of time there and am quite familiar with this novel line of argument.

But the kernel of what they're saying is correct: the proposed "Patriot" regulations are seriously worrisome to our freedom. Americans should reflect well on why this should be, and what should be done about it. We should also realize well that this would have been no different with a Gore administration, at least if one is to extrapolate from the privacy assaults that Clinton and Reno put into place.

Well I'm not European!

And I'm not making the comparison between George W and Hitler.

I just ask that people wise up to the crap that they are being fed by their governments. This is not Democracy! What is the purpose of scaring the heck out of ordinary American and English citizens? Remember the "duck and cover" campaign during the early days of the Cold War? Do you think a tin of sardines, plastic sheeting and some Gaffa tape are going to save you?

Get Real.

I do not go in for conspiracy theories. They are a crock. But this is no conspiracy here, it is a massive PR campaign. To what end, I am still not sure.

lawriebuck-

I think most people know when they're being handed a line of crap by their gov'mts or others. I have seen a few of the posts in this thread which have made mention of a comparison of GW, etal with Hitler, etal which I view as being crap.

I did read the Patriot 111 garbage and agree with you and SY that this is a dangerous direction (and I do intend to give my elected officials the "business" about it).

Maybe I am being overly sensitive about what I perceive the sentiment of this thread (if not anti-American then very close to it). I, too, have been to Europe several times and to Australia and South America as well. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences. The people, the places, the hospitality, the food were all most memorable experiences.

To me, part of the idea of peace is enjoying other people, their cultures and, in particular, learning about (and respecting) the differences. My mother told me variety is the spice of life, I believed her.

SteveA, I am in complete agreement with you.

Now that we are 400+ posts into this thread, I"m beginning to think that a good proportion of European attitudes toward us is in fact based upon jealousy!

[snip]

That is an interesting thought. What exactly would the Europeans be jealous of?? Firstly, I think there is not that much to be jealous of; we have McDonalds, traffic jams, shopping malls and air pollution as well you know. Secondly, blaming jealousy is a cheap way not to think about the real issues.

The real issue IMNSHO here is that many Europeans (and Americans, for that matter) think that killing scores of civilians to settle a personal vendetta is not a civilised thing.

The most dangerous country on the planet is the USA.

Our press and media insult your leadership, intelligence, and isolation, and world manipulation on a daily basis. We think you are very dangerous; we feel that your leader is a fool. We understand you are a warrior like people (perhaps you got that from us); we are concerned at your desire to control the world. Don't take this too hard; we also hate our own system of things and government.

But Blair likes you.

Have your war... kill the fuzzy wuzzy's...

Remember you reap what you sow.

Please understand, the point is not anti-americanism.

I made very good experiences with amerikan people in you counry when i was there. I had no bad experience there. I have no reason for anti-americanism.

It´s not possible to say it it much clearer words.

Amerikans please accept the way we in europe think is ambivalent.

what are the dissimilarities between canadian/european culture and american culture that we should be jealous of it? considering that we share similar backgrounds, religious and or ethical beliefs and popular media/culture i would say that we are much more alike than dissimilar. the fact that we dislike many aspects of this common culture and that many of those aspects of it that we don`t like arose in america doesn`t seem to me a very strong argument that we are jealous of 'the american way of life'.

i am not anti-american. i am quite capable of seperating the actions of a government from the people it is intended to serve.
i am not even particularly anti-war nor pacifistic.

but at this time i do not believe that the iraqi regime is a serious threat to anything except the bush familys' self-esteem.

it is quite possible that i am wrong about this. but until i see some valid reason to once again go to war in the middle east....

please don`t try to frighten me with vague prognostications of 'dirty bombs' in LA and anthrax in alabama... unless, you, america, as the self-proclaimed guardian of the 'free world' find a better way to defuse the situation in the middle east (better than say, depleted uranium, smart bombs and patriot missiles) you are only increasing the likelihood that zealots will be appearing on your (and mine, btw) doorstep.

What I admire about Americans is their patriotism. A significant number (perhaps the majority) of the British public hate the UK; it's government; and it's perpetually dreary grey weather system.

How great it must be to love your country. I think my country is pants.

For people how hate USA ,

Why don't you make another thread with title :

"Why we hate USA"

For me is more than clear ther are a few guys here how love to blame USA. It would be honest and fair to tell something like this :
" I hate USA becouse : Bla, bla, bla .... McDonalds= junk food ....
bla , bla ...... polution ..... bla, bla, bla ...... imperialism ....... buuuh ............................... !!!!"

" We don't care about Saddam or North Korea , we wanna blame USA and we have a motive."

Regards !
