Now, here's a question for you: what percentage of Belgian prisoners are of Turkish or North African origin?
It's hard to tell, since the Belgian government doesn't release these kinds of figures, but according to this:
http://www.kcl.ac.uk/depsta/rel/icps/worldbrief/europe_records.php?code=127
more than 40% of the Belgian prison population holds a foreign passport. About 12% of the general population are foreigners, and of those more than half are from other EU countries. I haven't been able to find numbers for the fraction of either the prison population or the general population which is made up of Belgian nationals of foreign ancestry, but from the numbers I could find it seems likely that a majority of Belgian prisoners are members of ethnic minorities. And the numbers for other European countries are similar.
I know that. And I never would deny it either 🙂
It just bugs me sometimes when you try to deny everything we "us-bashers" say about the us. If a US citizen would make the same statements, you would be milder in your responses.
But it realy doesn't matter who points those things out , does it?
Anyway, those things are not as important as the war in iraq. It's probably normal that you spend more money on prisons when the amount of criminals rises. I can understand that. They do that everywhere in the world.

My first thought here is to say....who cares about the UN? ........we either need to take out Castro by force or end the embargo.
.........I am coming to the conclusion the purpose of diplomacy is to prolong a crisis.
OK folks, why should we care about international Law when it doesn't suit us?
If diplomacy only prolongs crisis, i suggest we take a leaf out of the American book, and take Bush out by force......😀:
i haven't read thru this entire thread, but let me just say as an american that i am absolutely positively ashamed of our current political leadership and everything they represent. furthermore, as an american, i would like to join my european friends in bashing the policies of my country, because it is the right and (ironically enough) patriotic thing to do.

Wow! stop! An american who agrees with us!
🙂
It is indeed very patriotic to bash your current government. To bad most people don't see it that way.
The critics of Bush are called unpatriotic, but they critisize him because they love their country and hate to see it go down the drain, because of these madmen.

Ahem. I must be posting in "invisible pixels". Please note the following which went on for several pages:

As it becomes increasingly clear that Bush & Co had little intention of telling the truth of what was happening in Iraq, George Jr. has come under increasing criticism for his May 1 appearance, in a flight suit, aboard an aircraft carrier. This is where he declared the fighting basically over.
Even as that appearance now begins to haunt him as the Iraq situation worsens, an "action figure" of Bush in his flight suit has appeared on the market!
No, this is not from the Onion or a similar site. This is the truth.
We have made cartoons into movies for years, complete with little plastic figure tie-ins that bolster the movie's popularity.
We have now gotten to the point where we are selling a President and his war the same way.

Just a quick thought, The US and Brits have now been in occupation in Iraq for as long as they gave the UN weapons inspectors. Hmmm...

On this subject i quote a passage from a maillist message that just crossed my desktop -- author is a loyal American -- and in its over-the-top way is kinda funny.
... our coke-smokin alcoholic, inarticulate protein stain of a president.

SY said:Which one is he talking about? The "protein stain" suggests Clinton.
He's talking about dubya, but he could be referring to either of them...
a politician by definition is the worst possible person for the job (ie what it takes to get elected makes the person unsuitable to do the job) -- that is me speakin...
dave
i dunno, i think lying about getting your **** sucked is less of a travesty than lying about justification for war... at least for the less puritanical among us, or the europeans for that matter 😛
Dalliances with the hired help are totally irrelevant. The assault on civil liberties, the growth of the nanny state, and the absence of a coherent foreign policy marks both administrations- not to mention the dozen or so previous ones. There was plenty of presidential lying about substantive issues before January '01.
The "coke-smokin alcoholic" refers to Bush, who, when asked about cocaine use, only said that he had not done anything illegal since his father became Vice President. At that time, Bush Jr. was in his early thirties.
Yes, the "protein stain" would at first look refer to Clinton. However, since the author was criticizing Bush at the time, I think he was rather graphically referring to the fact that George Jr. is the son of a President. It was a derisive way of saying, "chip off the old block".
As far as there being no differences between Bush and Clinton-well, I don't want to push this thread in the direction of Democrat vs. Republican if I can help it. I mean, we are about to enter a year when we will all have plenty of that.
However, in another thread I even saw our old cynic, SY, work in a reference to the Kansas school board decision that "creation science" be taught in the science classrooms as a theory equal to evolution. Well, that was a political decision made by an elected school board, as was the eventual decision to rescind it. SY obviously cared enough to mention it.
Cynicism is good for a laugh, but deep down I think we all know that there are real choices to be made at the ballot box.

KW, when I was a kid, my parents packed me off to a summer camp. Camp Sightseeing, near Ellicot City, MD. One of the highlights of the summer was The Color War. Each group of campers was assigned to the Blue Team of the Gold Team. There were all kinds of competitions, rallies, contents, what-have-you, where the teams could win or lose points. And at the end of the summer, the Gold Team won. Was there any difference between the Gold Team and the Blue Team? Sure. The Gold Team had the ribbon.
Before the last presidential election, I made the stunning prediction that the winner would be a rich son of a politically powerful person, named after him, one who had not really done anything of note in his life, educated in the Ivy League, avoided combat service, and in favor of bigger and "better" government, all for our own good, of course. Whaddaya know, I was right. Sometimes there is a choice, especially in local elections. But sometimes not, especially in national elections.

Some of you guys don't get it....................
Having your **** sucked at work, by a subordinate, is called sexual harassment. Even talking about having your **** sucked at work to/with/around a subordinate is called sexual harassment. And that means that you will get fired. Try it sometime if you think otherwise.
So, lying about "dalliances with the hired help", which may be in fact be "totally irrelevant", become a matter of survival in such situations. And since it is slimeball politicians who gave us these laws, then they should be held up, or is it down, to the same level compliance. If we can get fired for expressing our natural hormonal urges, then they should to. Sounds like it is not only fair, but perhaps the only way to rid ourselves of the whole stinking lot of them.
And then their replacements too.
Lying at work is an everyday routine, employed by everyone from the lowest peon trying to save his/her butt, all the way up to the CEO who commits the largest accounting scandal in history (making schnooks like me broke in the process). Few, if any, get fired for lying. I don't think any large company could survive if lying at work was as illegal as talking about having your **** sucked at work is. Hell, politicians don't say or do anything except lie. Must be in their job description. Expecting any of them to be truthful is really quite naive when you think about it.
And as for "lying about..........", thanks to Clinton the bar has now been raised (lowered?) for what constitutes lying. This is the guy who said that he "did not have sexual relations with that woman.........Miss Lewinsky". Did he mean "that women" as the wench he is married to, or some other unspecified woman, he says as he directly addresses Miss Lewinsky. (Yes, "English" allows for such subtle tricks to come into play.) Or did he mean what we really thought that he meant in that "having his **** sucked" is not sexual relations. Hey, it is just his interpretation of the situation. He saw it differently, so his eye, he did not lie.
So......as for the present occupant of the house that my tax dollars pays for.........did he lie?? In order to lie, you have to know the truth, and that what you are saying is not the truth. All of you people who revile him so claim that he is the dumbest man on the face of the earth. So, if he is so dumb, then how can you expect him to even know the truth? In that case, he is doing the best that he can, which probably means that he is doing a lot better than we should expect.
No, I think that lying is the incorrect allegation. I believe that, like in the sketch of perhaps the most famous of all Monty Python shows.......... the one about "Spam", that the publisher of the Hungarian-English phrase book, that turned out to be a dirty Hungarian-English phrase book, the proper claim should be:
"I plead incompetence."
Works for all politicians, of all persuasions, of all countries, for all times.
Also works for some people here who post constantly just to................wait, enough about you-know-who......behind his back even..............he is paranoid enough already without more encouragement.
As for "real choices to be made at the ballot box".................... sure you have. You can chose what group of crooks is going to take your money, who, in turn, waste it on pet projects, or cronies, of their choice. The end result is the same: my money goes to people that have no right to it, and do almost nothing to better my lot. And sometimes make it worse.
(If anyone wants to know how the FDA, upon some irrational whim, decided to virtually kill lots of people like me who were trying hard not to die, send me an e-mail. Too long for here.)
Hell, they can't even my sales tax return back and forth to the corrupt government agency who gets the pleasure of taking other people's money, who, in turn, penalizes me because they never got it. That is government, and politicians, for you.
I guess that makes me a cynic, too. So I plead guilty.
Jocko, still alive despite government's attempt to the contrary.
