For Years the USA has been one of the best, and some times the ONLY, Nation(s) to have the means to deal with these types of situations. Unlike many other countries, We will play as a "Team Player" when it is possible to do so, but We will also have the will(And the means) to "Go it alone" if need be. We will ask for help, But We do not need permission to do what We feel is correct for Our countries interests. If this sounds "Bostfull", Too Bad!

What is the HDI?

EC8010:
"What is this HDI of which you speak?"
It is the Human Development Index that is measured by the UN:

"The Human Development Index measures a country's achievements in three aspects of human development: longevity, knowledge, and a decent standard of living. Longevity is measured by life expectancy at birth; knowledge is measured by a combination of the adult literacy rate and the combined gross primary, secondary, and tertiary enrolment ratio; and standard of living, as measured by GDP per capita (PPP US$)."

A composite index measuring average achievement in three basic dimensions of human development-a long and healthy life, knowledge and a decent standard of living. For details on how the index is calculated see technical note 1.

It's about Human Nature

We people are the same everywere

When in power we are unfair.
It's sad but that's how it is.

There are so many dictators and tyranns around the world, are some of them good and others bad?

It's disgusting to hear every day in the news the lies of how this and that must be done in the name of justice (are you God?) and for the others own good (with the same fake smile).

It's ok to hear and understand that it is a pretense, a lie they have to use to do what they have to do for their profit.

But to believe these lies and support them in an effort to show that our country is not bad, then that shows very low IQ.

When someone says to you that your country is bad just reply "You would have done the same and maybe worst things if you had the power"

people

In fact its false to believe that all (US)-Americans support
G. Bush and his fellow cowboys and its also not true that
all Europeans (Canadians Australians etc) are against the
war.
I personally love this country (US) and its people!
I believe that a great majority just wants to live in peace.
But people can be manipulated by more or less democratic
elected Presidents (defacto Bush had NO majority! Count the
votes, think of Florida!) as history shows.
History shows too that everytime when a Republican was
elected for President of the United States he started war somewhere far away from his place, telling his people that
this happens in self-defense!
I just wonder why it is called self defense somewhere on the
other side of the planet, where you have to travel a long time
to defend yourself.
Some days ago I read a posting of a Californian guy, he was
threatened just because he believes his life and his familys
life in danger just because he is American.

This is absolutely nonsense, intelligent people make a difference
between normal friendly people and uneducated gunsslingers
and cowboys.

PS: rocket science is NOT an American invention! (W. von Braun...)
TV is NOT an American invention! (Braunsche Röhre)

Umm, interesting. Are you sure that it's not due to some sort of space alien mind control?

SY, these people who made Blues were slaves, not citizens. If you take what they made as a great thing the USA gave to the world - you could also take what your amerikan cats and cows produced. What amerikan people did to them is nothing to be proud of. BTW the genocid on native americans was a much larger sin if you count the souls than what one of all these bad men you listed made. So should we fight against the bad americans? Or is what i´m talking about only "old amerika"?

I think this discussion has nothing to do with the war plans of your mad man president anymore. We from europe don´t need to discuss we you who gave the bigger arts or languages to the world, who is the better one etc.

Amerika is based on euuropean culture. Nothing from there is really new, and no nation is better than anotherone. Every nation other killed people for what the think. But we in europe think thios should be history. How can an intelligent human being trust in a man who wants to go to war, kill people, and say he does this with god? Holy war? in europe that happens thousand years ago, now you have to retrieve this part of history?

Your goverment behaves ridiculously, and my impression is at school in USA they learn how to eat burgers and how to use firearms instead of find agruments. In europe we try to teach them to learn how to think, whom to belive, learn a little bit of hegelian concesness.

You said some times now there are good arguments against war, but ours are no good ones. OK. I need no arguments against war. I miss the arguments for a war. Again i say: there are amerikans who need to learn, only because you say somethuing is, it isn´t allready reality.

again:
http://users.pandora.be/soulwaxke/iraq.jpg

Why the heck should we go to a war we are absolutely not interested in? because some man who has the intelligence of an primate tell us lies, and behaves like mad if we don´t trust them?

And all, excuse my bad english, its not easy to express my thought in this language. Would be easyer in german. Maybe i should start posting bilingual.

TV is NOT an American invention! (Braunsche Röhre)

For the record, the television electronic transmission system that we use today is an American invention. The preceding work involved spinning disks which were were an evolutionary dead end.

The claims of Vladimir Zworykin were vastly exaggerated by media mogul David Sarnoff in an attempt to grab the patent rights from the real inventor, Philo T. Farnswrth of Utah, USA.

There are more powerful men (countries):
France, UK, Israel, India, Pakistan, Russia, Ukrainia, China, USA
(the good ones)

Because they are good ones they are allowed to carry nuclear weapons....
Or was it: because they carry nuclear weapons they are the
good guys??

NORTH KOREA (the bad one)
Nobody knows... therefore G.B. looks for a "diplomatic solution"

Iraq (the worst one)

At least monkeys know...

Who tells who is the good guy?

Free people in a free world don´t need those Rumsfelds, Bushes
etc. to tell them if they are good or bad guys!

Please Mr. Clinton, come back!

And one might point out that Robert Goddard was doing seminal research into rocketry while von Braun (who became an American, voluntarily, and with great passion) was still a naughty thought in his father's head. Of course, the fundamentals of rocketry were developed by the Chinese at a time when the Europeans were busy trying to invade the Middle East and kill Muslims.

I'm touched once again by the concern that Uli expresses for the harm that I'm doing to America.

Und till, ich kann Deutsch lesen, wenn du willst. Es tut mir leid, ich muss auf Englisch antworten. Blues was NOT slave music, though the music of slavery (spirituals) was a huge influence. It came along much later, with its origins centered in the post-Civil War south and reaching its present form in the first half of the 20th century. And the other great American music of that era, bluegrass and old-timey, was an invention of the Southern rural whites. Both types of music extensively cross-pollinated, in the American way of hybrid vigor, making music stonger and better. And they continue to do so today.

I'm not ashamed of him. I don't agree with everything he says, but he isn't letting all these people who are hemorrhaging anti-American slogans through every pore of their body get away with it either. Most of these criticisms don't make a whole lot of sense.

America didn't invent jazz, America is a cultural wasteland, American movies are only popular because you Americans bully us into buying them in bulk, (1,000 American movies or no American movies), etc. Oh, please.

In the last couple of pages, this thread has devolved from criticism of a specific American policy into little more than an online group therapy session for Europeans desperate to establish some sort of intellectural or cultural supremacy to counterbalance the fact of American economic and military supremacy. It gets worse and worse the more it goes on.

You know, not every criticism of America, (and certainly not every criticism of America's present Iraqi situation or refusal to ratify Kyoto) is envy inspired. But before I read this thread, the Americans who say, "Those Europeans are just jealous" I regarded as hotheads who just won't take criticism. Now that we are 400+ posts into this thread, I"m beginning to think that a good proportion of European attitudes toward us is in fact based upon jealousy!

Ok, Sy I apologize for that rude attack.

Its not so easy to make a difference when men like Mr. Rumsfeld,
who is American 2nd generation tell the world that Germany
is like Libya just because the German government has their
own opinion.
"Who is not for us, is against us" is not the way to treat "partners" and this is what G. Bush & co have to learn.

I personally am far away from "hemorhaging" anti American slogans thru every pore of my body, I love America as I stated
above, the more am I shocked about the aggression which comes
from over there!

Uli

OK, Uli. And in fairness, you did make an effort to give a balanced view of America. The criticism I aimed was not so much at you, but at a long line of posts that seem to not so much be interested in criticising certain specific policies, but rather American culture in general and it's success in other countries.

Every country exports it's culutre to other nations, if the other nations find aspects of it appealing. This business of, "We used to eat this and listen to that until YOU came along" is really getting beyond the pale.

emotions

Tx for the kind reply!

As this discussion turns very emotional I sometimes think that
it would be best if it´s all over.
In Europe we fear not only G.B.´s "lazyness" in handling
nuclear weapons but far more guys like Tony Blair (GB) who
said that he is willing to throw the bomb!
The point is that in case of war there are ONLY losers left.
(Except some multinational companies earning a golden nose
in selling weapons).
I believe that man cannot fight the evil with evil!
"FIGHTING FOR PEACE IS LIKE F...ING FOR VIRGINITY"
Both don´t work!

How about your refusal to sign up to the Kyoto protocal. Most of the world's scientists (including those within the US) agree that global warming is happening, and that it is caused by increasing amounts of 'greenhouse gases' in the atmosphere... Meanwhile America does absolutely nothing to discourage the use of ridiculous, gas-guzzling, ego-enhancing SUs and RVs.

Come on, I would love to hear an American defend his country's refusal to sign up to Kyoto.

Well, you won't get one from here. I think we should have ratified Kyoto. And I might point out that Gore was for it. And he got more votes than Bush. (Actually, I don't have porblems with the Electoral College-both men tailor their entire campaign for Electoral Votes. I DO have problems with the fact that Bush's Florida campaign manager, Katherine Harris, was the one who supervised the recounts!!)

But tell me, how long did it take for most of the signees of that treaty to ratify? As of a couple of years ago, most of them had not ratified it.

Are you trying to say that the Anti-Americanism here is because of Kyoto? If you walked up and asked 100 Europeans on the street, "Name a comprehensive environmental treaty of the last few years", how many would be able to answer "Kyoto"? About 6?

One of the quotes you gave was from a European poster complaining about the amount of lawsuits in America. Since you are defending him, I assume you endorse his general postion on this. I must question-why on Earth do you care if we sue each other? You are over there, we are over here. Moreover, the very environmental policies you espouse are frequently carried out by environmental groups bringing lawsuits aginst polluters! You can't have it both ways. You can't complain that we sue each other too much when one of the primary strategies of the environmental movement is to bring lawsuits.

Maxwell, you are a perfect example of what I am talking about: self-contradictory Anti-Americanism!!!

Are you trying to say that the Anti-Americanism here is because of Kyoto?

kelticwizard, will you understand it? Most preople are not anti amerikansitic in the way theay are against amerikans. Most people think very postitive about a lot of things and people in the USA. We don´t think that black and white. We are against you goverment atz the moment. But most Europeans had no problem with Mr. Clintons and his Lewinski stuff. You laugh about this in Europe. In fact, he made points with this story here...
We are not against the amerikan citizens, and in some ways you law system is developed in a better, more pragmatic way. It´s what we say, in germany everything is forbidden, exept it is explicit allowed. In US everything is allowed, exepct it´s explicit forbidden. I prefer the US way. But Mr. Bush is the one who wants to destroy this way. We are only against your goverment. And if you look around the world this movement is very common at the moment. Goverments and teir peoples are very far from each other at the moment. And people go out and say they don´t like what goverments do. (look what happend in Buenos Aires) In most EU countrys the mayority of people think different than the goverment this times. UK, Spain, Italy... The difference between Italy and Germany is now, Mr Schröder is to weak to act against the will of the gernmans. Mr Berlusconi is stronger. He uses his power against the will of his Italians. Same for Spain and UK.

But at the moment i fear to go to the states. A goverment that put students to jail because they have less than 15 hours a week classes and are from another country is nothing i can trust in.

Unfortunately, you have a point. There has been a multifaceted erosion in civil liberites over here since September 11 that has been reported on, but not emphasized enough.

After September 11, the government rounded up some 800 non-citizen suspects and held them for months without notifying anybody of their capture. Almost a year later, a judge ruled that the names had to be released. The governement appealed, and a judge reversed the decision. I don't know if the names have been released yet.

I hope the USA will have a better goverment soon. More i can´t do.

I won't defend all the actions of this Administration. I sincerely hope we have a replacement in a couple of years. I do not think that Mr. Bush has gone about this the right way at all.
