Depending on how much bass boost you want, this might be an alternative to a sub

I recently bought a pair of LRS+, just to try some panel speakers. Had that itch for a long time, as my first serious speakers, 33 years ago, were ribbon planars.
At first listen, I thought that I was listening to a midrange! After some break in (they need some more) and messing with speaker and listening position, I manage to make them sound decent on their own. They now sit 80 cm from the back wall and 3 meters from me. Tweeters on the outside. Of course they need some help on the bass and I have plans to make an open baffle bass,to be used as a stand for the speaker too. Some sort of SLOB from the Pass forum. I have a few 12 and 15 inch to try. I am also waiting a Schiit Vidar 2 amplifier from a friend to try, to see if the low end will get any better first. I also have a Yamaha p3500s that I will try soon.

A proposal that can seem weird. Buy a set more and place them side by side, and diy a narrow ribbon tweeter with neodymium magnets crossedover at about 7k. WMTMW. That I belive would be a killer system that still is fairly cheap.
The LRS+ is a very small speaker. A much larger bass panel is needed to get any good bass output, so just adding a second LRS+ will not be enough.
I did this thing with my far larger 3.7's, where I added two 1.6's as additional bass panels. Even so, I cross over at 100 Hz to my subwoofer system....

I know it will not give much under 50hz. But some people are ok with that. And if they dont want active/dsp, it could do the trick. But agree I could not live with that . My next project will with 12, 12'' , and have seen your attemts at ob bass Holly Molly.
I’m working on a dipole midbass system for my Magnepan 3.7’s. I’ve found that the 3.7’s perform exceptionally well above 300Hz, but not below. They have limited SPL and distort quite a lot. The native frequency response of the bass panel also drops off below 300 Hz.
My midbass system is the same size as the 3.7, and is intended to sit right next to the 3.7 with the midbass drivers towards the 3.7. The same solution can of course the used with smaller Magnepans.
Here’s a pic of the baffles….

I've made an interesting choice - Eminence Delta 12B. They are really cheap drivers, but have one interesting feature - low Mms of 32 grams. In comparison, the higher end / high power 12" woofers typically exceed 100 grams.
Ok found the same problem. So been looking at a lot of drivers. Offcource AE but their price with shipping/told . Then their is sb acoustics ob12 ?. And maybe many sb20frpc30-8 where I can cut the whizzer off. This one looks ok to 60 Hz. I guess you plan too cross to a subwoofer?.
Well migth be where I end too, but with closed box subs. You have done a lot with OB woofers, so I guess you by now know what works 🙂.
A little off topic , but I belive that magnepan would sell the midrange tweeter part from their 30.7, if somebody asked them. From their webpage
Imagine if we repacked the 30.7 tweeter/midrange in a 10 inch-wide panel and sold it with small dynamic woofers (that could be hidden). Such a hybrid would have all the problems that have plagued all hybrids, but there is no acoustical reason it would not work in a small room (the only issue would be aesthetics.)

That is tempting, but I'd want a much larger midrange than the one in 30.7. Something 1,8 meters tall and 15 cm wide would be nice, to get better sensitivity and lower distortion.
I currently only use the midrange in my 3.7's to fill a narrow gap between the ribbon tweeter and woofer panel - XO points are 2,7 and 4 kHz.

- Dimensions (H×W×D): 200.7 ×73.7×5.2 cm, bass/lower-midrange panel; 200.7 x 36.8 x 5.2 cm, midrange/tweeter panel
I think that the 30.7 midrange driver is no larger than 160 x 7 cm. Too small to match with a dipole midbass system with dynamic drivers in my opinion.
I'll try to find a picture of it.

I listen to Martin Logan CLS Z2 and they have a response similar to your posted response. What I have found that works well for me is a Martin Logan Depth I placed against the back wall and in my case centered between the 2 speakers. I run the Z2 full range and add in the sub around 45hz. I also like an older down facing Audio Concepts Saturn sub in that same position but it is big. I have heard various OB subs and IMHO they are really tough to place right and speed wise do not keep up with the panels.I recently bought a pair of LRS+, just to try some panel speakers. Here's two screenshots from a Magnepan factory tour video on Youtube, showing the 30.7 mid/tweeter MDF board. The red arrow points to where the midrange driver is located. It's even smaller than I thought.
