Beautiful woodwork, I'm envious of such skills.
Tried to find the pcb sizes, only reference might be to print the pcb artwork "actual size", otherwise I'm sure that Subbu will be able to tell us in between all his other commitments. Perhaps Jean-Paul has the size.

I was wondering what the dimensions of the pcb's are?

I was looking for the same information yesterday. This is from the other thread:

PCB : For those who size does matter...
- ES9023 : 8.1 x 5.1 cm (to be revisited) - PSU : 9.4 x 5.1 cm (to be revisited)

...so it says to be confirmed, but I took a gamble as don't imagine they will be that different and ordered one of these for the DAC:

4" x 3" x 2" Black Steel Adaptable Box Plain Side 100 mm x 75 mm x 50 Mm | eBay

They're cheap and steel so should be good shielding. A little taller than I'd like but there are others that are lower profile but bigger in other dimensions.

Thanks a lot Bud, those boxes look pretty ideal I'll have a closer look, I was considering something like a type of diy stomp box enclosure (for guitar pedals) like this one 1590BB Style Aluminum Stomp Box Effects Pedal Enclosure for Guitar Hotsell EP98 | eBay
But that's aluminium, steel is probably better from what I can understand.

I was wondering what the dimensions of the pcb's are? i'm building a wooden enclosure and want to find a lille metal enclosure to screen the dac part inside the wooden enclosure so dimensions would be helpful, pardon if i've missed this info in a past post.

Work in progress pictures.
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

V3 DAC PCB : 8.1 x 5.1 cm - PSU : 9.4 x 5.1 cm

Wanna trade a built DAC for such a beautiful case ? 😀

Stunning !

Thanks JP!

I'm building this stereo so it will fit in our bookcase in the living room, compact and nice looking, more like a piece of furniture, this was a big selling point when I convinced my wife it was a super great idea to get a better hifi system 🙂 So I can't trade this one but I'm going to build more stuff, i've already started on a system for my office/workspace so i'm definitely open to trade stuff another time 🙂

A happy wife is important if you want to be happy yourself too 😉 I hope you both will be satisfied with the sound quality as well. Are you going to oil the wood or varnish it ?

BTW I would add some shielding inside the case.

Yes definitely, it will be treated with pure tung oil, it offers a very resistant surface and looks very natural and smooth.

I've thought about different options for shielding, one is putting the dac pcb inside a steel case inside the wooden enclosure, another was to actually paint the inside of the case with a conductive paint, the same as guitar builders use to shield the electronic parts inside of guitars, I think that would be an elegant solution, but I don't know how effective it actually is.

For guitars conductive adhesive tape also exists.
I think it's quite effective; even just kitchen aluminum foil improved hum pickup in a quick and dirty experiment I did some time ago.

Another possibility is to recycle the thin metal sheet that lines the inside of some CRT screen plastic case. It can be cut and folded relatively easily, and doesn't look too bad. And you can find tossed CRT screens at the dump... :yuck:

Enclosure and PCB board do's and don'ts

Any recommendations regarding enclosures for a newbie like me?

Such as:

- How close can you put the PSU board and the DAC PCB?

- Can they be stacked one above the other?

- Should there be any *metal* fit in place as shielding between the PSU board and the DAC PCB?

- If you use a steel or aluminum box (as shown on recent posts as e*bay links), are any cuts or holes needed for cooling or ventilation?

Thanks in advance for your good advice ! 🙂

Hi All

For Assembly Service subscriber, please mention Subbu to send me your PCBs & ES9023 chips.
Latecomers are asked to do so today.
Subbu is packing and labelling PCB & DAC chips... 😉

Parts GB will be closed tomorrow, so it's time to check your order.
You'll find attached last updated list.

More to come soon about prices and delays.

WM8804

I noticed that the bag with the WM8804 transceivers comes with an interesting warning label. Something for other people to plan for, when ordering parts ahead of receiving the PCB. See pic below.

Hi Phil,
Do we have at least an approximate idea about price and time frame for the parts GB?
I think it'll help a lot of people decide on whether to place their order for the GB...
Thanks
Nick
P.S: I'm already registered for the GB, no worries here 🙂

I've ordered and received the parts already and now waiting for pcb's.
What is to be planned for the people like me who order parts before pcb's ?

Unfortunately Mouser was out of stock of WM8804 and i need to buy it from Farnell at double the price of Mouser.

That is why I made the post. If yours comes in a sealed bag, leave it in until you need it. If not, put it into a sealed bag along with some dessicant (small bag of silica gel that often come with parts). I keep a few of those around for that reason. When the time comes to use them, I dry them out in the oven, let them cool, and pop them into a ziploc antistatic bag along with the parts.

Last I checked Newark (in the US) had only 12 of these left in stock, @$3.28 each. At least in Europe, they are more available.
