There are 2 screws under the sticky pad on the contols board that make it hold onto the front cover. Have you removed those? If yes, than.... im as lost as you are, lol😉
Ancorp, I don't want to be a downer but I wouldn't put a lot of time/effort into this LCD.
I projected it at about 48" by 48", and the pixelization was bad enough that I don't consider it to be watchable. The resolution just isn't high enough to be satisfying, even if the focus is made slightly soft to reduce screendoor.
I'll be turning mine into a portable DVD screen.
Cheers

It does run with the backlight disconnected. I haven't documented it, but it is very easy. You only have to take apart the screen part - nothing in the joystick area you need. Once you have it open it's pretty apparent how it comes apart.
No pitfalls that I remember - except for handling the LCD. I tore a ribbon cable on my 1st hipgear. Not while disassembling, but when getting pieces together in my projector. Careful. Of course, it's a lot less painful knowing it was a $30 mistake instead of a $300 mistake! 🙄
All this has got me stoked - next project is a custom built unit using a PS One Screen. yeehaa!

Serow,
I know the quality will be quite bad, im just doing this for fun. I want to get started with LCD projection. This wont be my main projector, im sticking with CRT projection. I want to make a portable, professional lookin all in one projector. It will have rca ports, headphone out, built in stereo speakers, cheap user-replacable halogen lamps (probably), perhaps lensshift, 3 video and 1 audio controls, perhaps a svideo port (internally converts to composite, very easy to do), carrying handle, etc. I want it to project like a 30-40 inch screen, anywhere i want.
Noventix,
Thanks for the tips! Good luck on your PS One projector!

Hey do you guys think I could use a 500 watt halogen work light? I cant afford a ballast and MH. I know it will be hot, and will waste electrocity, but it gives out about 9500 lumens (thats pretty low for a 500w I know), but what kind of output will i get in the end? I hopeing for about 1000 lumens (i will use a very high efficency lens, atleast 75% efficiency, so I will have 600 lumens minimum right?).
I will cool it properly (probably with a pair of 120mm fans, loud, but will do ok just for testing, than Ill back down to like 60 or 80mm fan/fans).
The floodlight with bulb costs like $10 us locally, so its worth a try...

Hello, post your results too, as you finish your lcd/slide projector projects, yes, that is a usps cardboard box screwed to the ceiling, elevating the projector, I would recommend this as a simple, effective, and inexpensive way to (with no build time) get that projector out of the sweet spot, or your lap ! just tack the wires up and bravo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with your statement ancorp. This is not about ultimate quality - it's all about having fun!
I would actually watch a movie with this thing, but agree that it's not the greatest. But without a low risk attempt to see how all this stuff works I might have never taken the next step. Just the fact that it even projects an image is a hell of an achievement in my view!
And I'm not alone - I showed this to a bunch of my techie friends and they all loved it, screendoor and all!
Go dude go - can't wait to see your results, especially since it sounds like you understand some of this stuff. Compared to my noob skills you'll probably pull off a miracle. lol.

Hey Dale,
This is pretty sweet. In my attempt to make my own I cut one of the wires on the PS2 and now I get nothing on the screen. Luckily I have a second one, but before I destroy another controller...do you have any suggestions on how to remove the casing for the controller? And did you remove any of the controller parts (boards, buttons, etc...)?
Any help and/or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Mike

Damn Straight!🙂 This project is very fun! Thanks again for the support!
Im going to have to put off my project, probably until the weekend. I need to find a half decent light source, and I dont want to go out and buy one just yet. I know that my grandfather has several working slide projectors, and some lighting stuff somewhere, so I may go down there on Saturday... and if not, than I will probably buy a 500 watt halogen worklight (should be about 9500 lumens) With a proper condensing setup, and a high efficiency lens, I should have a decent bright image. Noone has given me a yes or no about such a light, i know its much less light efficient (it makes a lot more heat though, just what I need, lol
) when compared to a MH setup, but it costs way less though!
I have the rest - stripped lcd, Delta 4 lens (too big, but very decent), condensors, thin wood, tools, my father to help me build 🙂D), wiring, a switch (somewhere....), rca ports (also somewhere...), several fans (may need quieter ones tho) all i need is a light source.
Dale - Nice screenshots man! Too bad they had some motion blur. I like the box idea, but I think someday it will collapse on your head, lol😉

Taking the controller apart was fairly simple. If you can take pics of the cut wire maybe someone can help. I have cracked two of these and both were OK after I pulled them out. Not too many wires in this thing that can't be fixed - unless you cut the ribbon cable that goes to the LCD itself.
Next person to crack one should take some pics - never thought of it when I was taking mine apart. Maybe I can put one back together and tear it apart it again. 🙂

Hi,
Thanks ancorp for the reply... I was able to find those screws and now I got it all out of the case.
Now my predicament is this... I was hoping the lcd ribbon would be at the bottom of the lcd, but instead it's at the top; that might complicate my project because I have to have the lcd upside down to project the picture right, and there is little or space at the bottom for the board.... plus the buttons board.... plus the ps2 controller (wish there was a way to get rid of it)......
Does any of you know of any projeciton lens that would help me with the inverse problem? I'll take pictures of the slide projector as soon as I can, so maybe that will make more sense....
Great pictures !!! Let's keep working and maybe one day this thread will turn into a sticky !! 😀

I cut the brown and the orange wires. I will take a pic tonight and post it when I get home from work.
I guess I could try stripping the wires a little bit and twist them together. If I don't have to open the other one I would rather not. But the wires are so small and thin I am not sure I will be able to get them back together.
Oh well, I guess will find out! 🙄
