I cant wait to get to my grandfathers house... i remember him having 2 or 3 slide projectors somewhere....

Man those lcds are cheap (cheap priced...), i cant wait to get mine together. Im glad so many people are trying Dale's idea (including me!).

Anyone in Toronto got a spare one (Ontario,Canada)

I'm interested in giving building one of these a go 🙂 Looking at projectors available for reasonable money, I can find a few different types. Hence I'm looking for advice on what lens and lamp power I should look for.

The lenses seem to be either 55mm or 75-120mm. What's the pros/cons of each?
Bulbs 250w -- should I go for a certain fitment that can be replaced with a more powerful one?

Out of these models, which is best for modding?

S-AV2000 (metal)
S-AV2050 (metal)
S-AV1050 (plastic)
Carousel S (metal)

Cheers 🙂

where would i be able to get that screen, i found a place that selld the 2.6" hip handheld controller for liek $40 but the intec sells for the cheapest i saw was $99, how on earth did u get it for $25, please help! imgetting a hold of 3 vintage projectors and i would LOVE to make these. thanks

Ok, I've won an ebay auction for a slide projector for 1$ + 32$ for shipping (yes, I paid the shipping 32 times the projector!). Now I need only the lcd. What do you think about this?
Could it be the right one? We don't have anything here in Italy like the hipgear, so I think i've got no choice. It will cost me 38$+35$=73$. It's not so cheap I think... Any advice?

Ok, I wasn't right thinking It would have been a game. I don't even have the projector and I've already got problems with it. The projector is from 70s and it needs dfh or cza lamps wich are very very expensive and lasts just 25 hours. I need a solution cause I don't want to spend a fortune in bulbs. Is there the possibility to change all the light stuff? Lamps are 500watt
Thanks

Pictures!

Ok folks! I have my unit assembled and working. I gotta admit - this is pretty awesome for $40. Picture does show the pixels but adjusting the focus a bit helps - and you get used to it pretty quick.

The first pic shows the circuit boards out of the ScreenPad and connected to a DVD player. The backlight was still on so I could test it.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

This one shows the projected image from a side angle. My pictures were not as clear as I hoped - the projected image is quite a bit better than these shots...

Here is a better shot - I had the image sized at about 3.5 feet. Tried it at 5 feet and still looks pretty good (for $40 anyway!). The chair on the left should give you an idea of size.

Here is a another image shot. These were alos takne in the day. My patio doors are closeby and I closed the blinds but it was still fairly bright in the room. This projector throws a fair amount of light.

Here's the completed unit, on top of my DVD player. Still need to enclose some electronics but making progress.

And for a peek inside, here it is with the cover off...

Maybe you already said that but the screen shape is not regularan. It's kinda rounded. Maybe it's a matter of screen distance from the lens. By the way a French friend suggested me to buy the hipgear on cduniverse. Just the best I've found for european people

I was just thinking about the NTSC/PAL question. The screen is NTSC and anything I have is PAL, ok? I've got a modified PS2 with which I play NTSC games. Normally it wouldn't work, showing black and white images but you can fix it with special rgb cables. Maybe it's possible to do the opposite converting a PAL image to NTSC just inverting the flux of data through the cable. I'm not good with eletronics, so i'm just wondering. The cable

The pictures picked up the slightly round shape - in person it doesn't seem to be apparent.

Yeah - still needs some tuning, but I really don't know what the hell I'm doing so to even get this far was a miracle. 😉 I imagine screen placement is pretty important but I just picked a spot where I got a decent image and went with it. If I knew more about how the optics worked I guess I could probably do a better job.

Been reading up - plan to learn a bit more and try to build a real one now. The biggest result of all this is a crazy desire to build a bigger and better projector!

The image got squared off because I have the LCD too close to the last lens I think. It cuts off a bit of each side of the picture. Not really sure how to place this damn thing since I don't really understand the optics and such.

Figure I'd order the LumenLabs guide and learn about more of this stuff before trying to fine tune it anymore. I have literally NO knowledge of projector operations - all I did was put the LCD where the slide would have gone! 😀

I would guess that if I moved the LCD out an inch or so I would probably be able to capture the whole image - but since the setup was designed for a slide to be at that distance not sure what other adjustments I'd have to make.

Either way - I'm having a blast! Just the fact that a handful of cheap parts can project a video image onto my wall - regardless of quality, is completely amazing to me. :wave2:

Ok, I've done my homework reading something here and there about PAL to NTSC conversion. It seems it's more difficult then NTSC to PAL conversion. I tried to find out why but I didn't understand a thing. Maybe it's because with that cable the NTSC signal is not converted to PAL/50 (Hz) but PAL/60 while it doesn't exist a NTSC/50... or something like that. As I said I'm not good with electronics.
See you
