Actually you can convert it, i have a schematic around for it somewhere, you should be able to run it on vga too, though i wouldnt bother on that reso lol. Most lcds run in ntsc nativly beleive it or not.
Trev🙂
Hmm cool.
You woulnt happen to have that schematic laround somewhere in your computer would you🙂 ? I interested in seeing it...

Too bad you dont live near Toronto, I have a triplet lens here from a slide or finm projector that I tested with the LCD, and it projected all of it. I dont really need it though.
Perhaps if you wish to got BIGGER, you can get a CRT lens, I remember some science store was selling 5" ones for 8.99? and 3.5inch ones for even less. They have a VERY good light efficiency. I compared an old Delta4 CRT lens, vs a 15mm triplet projection lens, and got about 3-4 times more brightness.

Well, I live in Quebec, maybe I could send you a money order or something?
Im 15, i have no way or sending or recieving money yet... sorry. But I might find a way, ill talk to my dad tonight.
Damn, this is bad... It felt like it would work for a change... Anyway, give me a feedback when you can!

Hi all. I've been lurking this forum for a while and the idea of building a projector by my own it's very fashinating. The problem here is that I'm Italian, so it's much more difficult for me to find the needed pieces. I wanted to do something similar to this one but everything I need on e-bay costs me a lot in shipping fees(30$ the projector and 35$ the shipping!!!). Do you know if there is any German or English (i don't even try to say Italian) e-store wich sells this kind of things?
Another question. I've found 2.5" a tft screen on ebay for 30$ with 105600 pixels. I'd like to know if I'm doing well calculating the pixel's size on the wall for a 100" image equal to 0.5cm x 0.5 cm (sqrt(200cm*150cm/105600)). If I'm right i don't think the quality should be so bad, but I'm probably doing an error not considering the dot pitch.
Bye
PS Sorry for the bad English

i suggest no more than 70 inches, but give it a try at 100, maybe it will be good enough. Its all a matter of prefference.
help building this
I had an old kodak slide projector in the trunk of my car, so i got a hip gear controller, and decided to give this a try. I've already got an ohp/sharp qa 1500 set-up, and a ps 5" DIY projector going, but I'm always up for trying something that sounds so promising. so...
My questions are, now that i've stripped everything, and am getting ready to place the lcd into the gutted slide projector, what worked for you? Did you do some steel, or aluminum light stock, bent up and fixed to the top of the carousel, so that it hangs down when put back together? I will be doing front projection, so it appears I will need to pass the light through what was originally the front of the lcd. How long has your projector been operating, and have you had any cooling issues? Do you have any pics of the inside of the carousel, now that the lcd is in? I've been using a printed out overhead transperancy cut to size to be sure the lens will focus the 2.6 inch screen, and it does, so I know I'm in the home stretch.
Any help appreciated...
Thanks,
Don

update
so...I went ahead on my own this afternoon, and am glad to report, this makes a great little projector. The quality is about the same as when using the 5" sony playstation lcd in a custom enclosure, but the big difference is in the overall simplicity in the build. From start to finish, this project took me about 8 hours, and cost me about $30. The sony psone projector cost me about $100, and took about 30 hrs. I already had the old carousel slide projector. I second what Dale said about the absolute necessity to get the lcd placed exactly right. That process, and fabbing a holder for it, took about 4 hours of patient trial and error (and it is still just slightly off). This is a very cool project for someone to get their feet wet in the world of DIY projection, and Dale -you should be commended for giving it a try, and sharing your idea with the rest of us. I will try to take some pics tomorow night.

could you perhaps post some photographs?
it would really help me (and probably 100000000's others) to build my own one. I just can't figure out how the LCD should be placed in the projector.
thanks!!!

HEY ALL !!!!!!!!!!!
and thanks, DOCBROWN ! I am glad to hear that you and others have attempted this simple , inexpensive build ! At times tedious but overall
refreshingly simple compared to the complex schematic large builds and/or having an overhead projector in your lap, haha,
I WILL BE POSTING PICTURES TODAY OR TOMORROW, due to the elevated interest in this 2.5 in LCD / SLIDE CONCEPT !!!
Right after I vote , Sit tight and please send your pics too !!!!
I am very interested in you progress !

I had to fab a holder for the lcd out of some thin steel, and some wood with slots filed into it. I was then able to have the holder "grabbed" by a spring loaded clamp that now holds the lens, heat glass, AND the lcd holder in place. I used the tiny screws from disassembling the hipgear controller to tie the fabbed holder together. It is immovable at this point, and pretty sturdy. I had the projector on for about 15 min this afternoon, and one concern I'm still having is cooling. The surface of the lcd became hot to the touch, while the fan was still pumping out lots of hot air. I may put a computer fan up in top, directly above the lcd for more cooling.
I'll post screenshots once I get the cooling thing figured out. Could someone let me know if the pic link works?
Thanks,
Doc

Awesome!
I couldn't resist!
I picked up a GameCube HipGear controller from Best Buy - wasn't on sale but was still only $29.99 CDN! Had it completely torn down and plugged into my DVD player in less than an hour.
Thanks to all who posted instructions - and especially wiring color codes, saved a boatload of time.
I also picked up a used Braun D40C slide projector for $7. Had to rewire the AC since cord was missing - but thing fired up first time and the bulb is still working too. It's old, but is pretty compact - think it might do a decent job. Not bad!!!
Long story short - pulled enough of the junk out of the projector to fit the LCD in. I loosely positioned it, fired up the LCD and projector - and WHAM....low and behold Harry Potter magically appeared on my wall!!!
You guys rock - I am truly in awe of the crazy ideas you come up with. I don't know how long this thing will last, but was a blast trying to get it running so far. Keeping my fingers crossed for a successful project.
Total cost - less than $40. Yeehaaaa!
