Sony vFET Amplifier Part 2

What do people think would be a good matching preamp for this amplifier? I've got very efficient speakers at 101 dB/w-m, so I don't need much in the way of gain - but what would prepare the signal well from a CD player? A tube pre would be cool, or would a passive like the B1 be the way to go?

You could buck the AC voltage down using a transformer with a 5V output. It would only need to have the current to handle the primary of the main transformer, so it would be rather small.

You could also put some inductors in series with the primary or secondary
windings, and that would also improve your power factor.

😎

Thanks for the suggestions! I happen to have appropriate parts for both options so I'll give em a spin.

I am still tempted to use a couple of large heatsinks I have here and build a ridiculously OTT regulated supply for class A amps...:flame:

Very happy to announce that we're ready to ship 🙂

  • Group 1 will get an email in the next 24 hours, and have 7 days to make their purchase. This allows time for questions to be asked, any problems to be sorted out, etc.
  • Group 2 will get an email in 7 days, and they too will then have 7 days to make their purchase.
  • After that, any remaining kits will be available to the public

KIT PRICING
============

"Essentials" kit:

Consists of:

  • 2 pairs of matched VFETS
  • Mounting hardware
  • 2 PCBs
  • 2 UMS compatible brackets

Quantities available:
  • 1 x "Essentials" kit - $208
  • 2 x "Essentials" kits - $416
  • Maximum 2 kits per diyAudio member. If you know someone who lives close to you, you are welcome to put several kits into one shipment in order to save money on shipping, just mention all the usernames in the username text field when you order.

For this first batch, the VFETs are being sold combined with PCBs and brackets. We are not allowing "spare" VFETs to be purchased separately without specific reason - the goal is for every VFET to make it into the amplifier of a diyAudio member. Nelson has advised there will be a second batch, but not how many.

A few people requested bits and pieces (4 sequentially matched pairs, just pcbs, just brackets, etc). I have contacted everyone in Group 1 that made a special request. If you have a special request, please email the store directly at contact@diyaudiostore.com (not this thread, not a PM). We will try to cater for your request as best as possible.

"Supplemental" kit:
Mark will advise if the supplemental kit is happening or not and advise pricing at a later date.

SHIPPING
============

Due to the unobtainium nature of the VFETs, we strongly recommend using a tracked, insured shipping method with signature required for delivery. We have put aside a very small number of extra kits for the rare chance that a package is lost. However, we cannot refund or replace any shipments that are not tracked (all tracked services also have insurance by default). Summary: Use USPS Priority International if you are not in the USA.

Shipping within USA:
  • Any priority/express or signature-required service should be fine
  • Tracked and signature-required shipping price varies between $9 and $20 (east coast, west coast)

International shipping:
  • Please use USPS Priority International. We cannot refund or replace lost USPS First Class International packages.
  • Tracked, insured shipping methods (such as USPS Priority International) are more expensive, but you can relax knowing that you have tracking. In our experience packages shipped with USPS Priority International arrive quickly and almost never go missing.
  • Example shipping prices using USPS Priority International (tracked, insured, signed for):
    * City: 1 kit / 2 kits
    * Vancouver: 47 / 53
    * Toronto: 47 / 53
    * Berlin: 61 / 68
    * Paris: 61 / 67
    * Stockholm: 63 / 69
    * London: 73 / 80
    * Singapore: 68 / 77
    * Sydney: 72 / 82

If you do not live in the US, you might consider sharing shipping costs with another diyAudio member. You are welcome to put several kits into one shipment in order to save money on shipping. Just mention all the usernames in the username text field when you order. Each extra kit only adds about 10% more shipping cost. Your savings can then of course be spent on beer - win/win! I have listed your fellow countrymen below should you want to consider this option. Based on the country people show in their profile on diyAudio, and n > 1:

NOTES ON HIFI2000 CHASSIS
=========================

The bracket that comes with the kit bolts straight onto Deluxe 4U/5U chassis and UMS heatsinks.

However, our Italian chassis partner Hifi2000 is "officially" closed for summer holidays during August.

To ensure VFET amp builders can still order their matching VFET compatible chassis and heatsinks during August, we have arranged for Deluxe 4U, Deluxe 5U and UMS heatsinks to be pre-assembled at the factory, and they will still ship during August.

Any orders that contain products other than Deluxe 4U/5U or UMS heatsinks will (most likely) ship at the start of September.

Hifi2000 will be operating on a "skeleton crew" during August, but will ship these orders once or twice a week, provided they don't require customization. If you need your chassis customized, or want anything other than a Deluxe 4U/5U chassis or UMS heatsinks, you will probably need to wait until Hifi2000 re-opens in September and the machinists return, complete with medditeranean tans.

If it suits your project or budget, we have produced a "low cost steel-cover" version of the 4U Deluxe chassis. We have had a number of rear panels made up in steel especially for this, with the Deluxe style hole pattern. That means we can now offer a lower cost version of the Deluxe 4U if you don't need aluminum. There is a link on the Steel Deluxe 4U product page to a thread on diyAudio where people discuss the relative benefits of aluminum versus steel.

I was going to send you a PM!! 🙂

Jason, do you know if it is possible for the fulfillment center to make 3 separate invoices with 1/3 of the shipping value in each?

this would be helpful for our customs department.

Don't know about that Manuel...we sould discuss this via PM...customs has a fixed minimum for each packet ( invoice ) so we would pay 3 times this amount this way.

Although if this comes via Postal services this is not the case, so your sugestion would work but complicate things.

One packet, one customs fee, one fee to present to customs....we devide by three later, that is my sugestion, it's cheaper.

I don't know where [member's name removed] is but I can receive the shipping package for Jama or visceversa, Jama can receive the mine....
If Cappy want to joint us or any other choice, please contact me.
Now the final question for this hard head.
Must receive an specific invoice, or where can see how many units or which elements are in the each kit. All these information with the object in pay the bill.
Best Regards Jason, Nelson and the Gentlemen.

This is a very good idea.
The problem is the customs here on Spain and Portugal take big taxes of us, and at least they are old parts for spare and hobby things. We are no taking any profit of the sale.
