Definitely, these drivers are fatigue free compared to others!
I’m finding the 250 to be a nice size!
I’m guessing that Field Coil drivers are heavier because there is a Huge amount of copper wire making up the Electromagnet! Mine are much heavier than my conventional drivers.
The new box is ready to accept the drivers!
It’s not varnished yet, see how it sounds first!

What type of wood are you using to build them?…looks like some sort of chopping block laminate?
@ tamra
I spent a lot of time with Be Yamamura when he lived in London and Italy. He explained to me that Japanese houses are often built with very little sound insulation and also that the hearing of most Japanese people is more sensitive than Europeans to the treble range.
In the early 1980s Be often used Lowther drivers but he sometimes altered the whizzer and also used shellac on the main cone. These treatments brought the speakers to a higher quality. Have a look at google for Be 'Yamamura - speaker system'.
I will send you a picture of a Lowther unit - IF I can find it!

Hi Chromnuts!
Yes, a bit like chopping blocks.
There is a type of timber beam known as “ LVL” … unlike plywood which has its layers running 90 degrees to one another, LVL has all its timber grain running the same way. I use many pieces cut 30mm wide and glued together like a chopping block!
It’s the best construction that I’ve found for Folded Voigt Pipe type speakers.. The sides are just dense plywood..

Thank you for letting me know.
I saw thread about Be yamamura but couldn't find information here.

Yes,Japanese house are less insulation and people are sensitive for noise.
But not sure about most of Japanese are more sensitive in treble range.
I really like sound colour and percussion from paper cone sound.
Sonido driver sounding so nice.
I wish if I can make my own field coil speaker with Japanese paper.
Thank you for letting me know.

Please, there are such giants and with SONIDO drivers. But for such boxes there is a very important factor, this is the "wife factor".

Ha ha 😂!
With boxes that big, it might be good to make sure that the Dog 🐕 Kennel is comfortable to sleep in, because that’s where the Lady Wife will send you!! 🤣😂😆
We made Mulberry Washi paper at a Historic Village not far from Takayama! My wife tells me that the leaves 🍃 of the Mulberry tree 🌳 feed the silk worms 🐛 and the fibre from young trees becomes the paper!
Japanese paper is highly regarded….

so, I just narrowed up the port/ mouth 50mm ( 25mm on each side, to equal what I’ve used with the smaller SB driver) and clicked the power supply from 2 to 3 and it just keeps getting better! ( my cabinets are deliberately a bit “ leaky”, so I guessed that they might prefer the number 3 setting!
Totally impressed!!

Hello,of course!!
I’m currently listening to your 250 FC drivers, and they are Amazing!!
Am planning a build using the similar driver , albeit not the FC version. Could you let me know how the top end response is, I have a MAOP based driver and it is very smooth on the top end. Is this similar or has a bit of a shout considering the higher sensitivity .
Ok, so my opinion is, and I can only compare to the SB Acoustics 8 inch driver, which is Excellent bang for $$$.
( Also I have a 250FC, so, not an honest comparison…)( $ comparison).
But, In the best box that I have made, ( the SB Acoustic driver has really benefited from better boxes), The Sonido driver has slightly better bass, but more mid range and top end detail. It’s pretty smooth, much nicer than the SB driver. ( I normally reduce the energy on the SB driver in the 3000htz range, but no need on the Sonido)
Someone said that the top end is more like Lowther… but, the top end is lovely and “ airy”, not harsh..
Not sure what you get from an A magnet 🧲, but I’m guessing similar??.

Great explanation provided, I was also contemplating since Istvan has an option of making the same driver without a whizzer cone, will that be a better option in making the speaker sound more warm/smooth ....
A shrill top end is the basic issue , such being tamed can result in overall smooth performance.
I’ve chimed in several times regarding the sound qualities of my SWR250 FC 16 Ohm.
If I put them in the catagory of “medium” size wideband/fullrange (8-10 inch) certainly nothing surpasses them that I have tried or heard.
That would include Fostex 206e, en, nv (stock and modified), Tang Band w8-1808, Lowther dx3, dx4, Pm6a, LCao Alnico, Supravox bicone and Lii crystal 10.
The Lii crystal was very close in performance…just different.
They provide excellent detail yet maintain smoothness and more balance in frequency response than all the others I’ve tried.
