About one if five managers I've had were good, and about one in five were absolutely awful. Most managers I've had only had a scant clue about what I did, which I never understood. In fact, the number one reason that people were made managers, in my experience, was because of loyalty; not ability.

One manager in particular was a complete joke and was very bad for morale; he was universally despised. Another manager I had was made manager because she had the other manager's baby (both were married to someone else and they were fooling around in the office), and she was Number One Supreme B**ch of the Universe. Again, this was very bad for morale.

I was senior supervisor at my last job, and I really hated it. I wasn't getting paid properly, no benefits, 80% turnover in the ranks and my boss only hired the stupidest of the stupidest of the stupidest employees. My health rapidly deteriorated (working 18 hours a day and night sometimes ) and when I quit my boss was so supremely pissed. He had to step up (his other senior supervisor quit at the same time) but honestly I think he deserved the grief. I know I'll never get a decent reference from him (12 years of my career essentially wasted) but I don't know if I'll ever work again any way.
