My friends from North America say it is hard to believe
Maybe your friends in the USA say that. We have pay by phone in Canada. Same principal, slightly different implementation.
We also have photo cheque where you simply take a picture of it, you don't have to deposit it in the bank.
An unlike the US as well, we have card tap. No need to insert or use a PIN for most purchases. Only when above a certain $ amount do you need to use your PIN.

Is that a recommendation based on experience?
You know, I do have a dual output power supply, which could make things a little more interesting.
Then each participant can dial in their appropriate trigger voltage, without going off the rails, of course.

Ken comes in a separate box! (American slang gives a double meaning to “comes.”)

As the famous humor producer asks someone who is annoyingly trying to joke around with him, “Are you Jewish?”

No…never try to outdo a Jewish comedian.

Yes…Just because you are Jewish doesn’t make you a comedian.

As an important note, do not ask this question to an actual Jewish comedian!

Cats... I'm not so sure.....
So far, over the last week our cat has brought in three mice, and a rat, (we live near to a farm) a stoat (I was really Pi**ed at this) and a squirrel, all dead. Luckily the small rabbit, and two robins she also brought in were alive, and all were happily released after recovering in boxes with food and water.
!DAMMIT! as I write this, it's brought in another mouse.....RIP mouse....
Time for another collar and bell.

You mean a RFID based card, when you say card tap?
Here we have those, wave or swipe above the card machine display area.
Sometimes the codes get hijacked (old parking lot capture scam), so some users set the time limit for repeated transactions.
Card tap yes, with ApplePay being even more prevalent here, but not countries support the latter - Bermuda for example, last time we visited. And there does seem to variance among merchants as to an upper limit that will accepted by tap, above which a physical insertion of RFID chip, or swipe of magnetic strip may be required.
The deposit of cheque by phone photo is a helluva great convenience- it’s probably been 5 years since I’ve had to physically visit a bank or ATM to make such a deposit.
I recently had my single CC compromised, and after several extended waits on the phone with bank personnel, had to visit a local branch, show them my government photo ID and the email alert from headquarters fraud department and repeat the whole operation. Only after identifying the specific flagged transaction as definitely suspicious would they initiate the issuance of a new card, which took only two days to arrive by courier, and was validated upon my first purchase tap. While a bit of an annoyance, the whole process was a rather smooth one; the passcode remained the same, and even the ApplePay link was automatically updated, but of course the several pre-authorized auto payment subscriptions needed to be manually edited. We so easily forget how much we rely on this technology, and too easily get frustrated at the folks in the financial institution protecting our interests. Of course, being married to a lifetime career bank employee provided some perspective.

Magnetic stripe cards had SIM type chips embedded, then RFID was also added, there is a sort of signal strength symbol on those cards.

After Covid, people became finicky about others touching their stuff, and also the majority of people do not have cards here.
The government created bank accounts with zero balance to bring people into the system, and smart phones sell for as low as $10 here for three year old used phones in working condition.

So, the trend and growth area here is mobile apps, desk tops and lap tops are out of fashion for the most part, except for students and people who use them for work.
We can even file tax returns and do a lot of things with mobile apps.

Android dominates the market here, as the phones are sold without a plan, not bundled, and Apple is famously expensive, and no free apps...Android has many free apps, and a wider variety is available for similar purposes, like caller ID etc..
