I checked: most of the English-speaking world awake in 1969 should get this reference. Dutch and Germans too?
Apparently this ear-worm song has got real popular for ball-games almost everywhere.
Trivia: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Diamond changed lyrics to "Hands ... washing hands ... don't touch me ... I won't touch you."

In the Netherlands one of the public radio stations broadcasts the "TOP 2000 of all time". Listeners can vote for their favorite 5 (?) songs during November month, and then the station plays the top 2000 songs back to back in the period from X-Mas day to New Years Eve. The resulting list could serve up some interesting combinations like a traditional Dutch bar song followed by The Cure followed by Boney M followed by Metallica (especially in the 1000 - 2000 range).
Concerning Neil Diamond, he has six entries in the 2021 Top 2000, Sweet Caroline being his highest entry.
WHAT-DID-YOU-DO-HERE?
You just triggered an earworm in my mind, now I can NOT stop playing Sweet Caroline in my head.
Most irritating is that it´s not even the full song, just a few seconds of it, over and over.
Will try to listen to some Metallica or Björk to push it aside 🙁
Here: so you also get infected ... you deserve it 😉

A dog comes out of nowhere and barks frantically at my car, so I pull away, and he tires off.
My father says 'You know him, don't you?'
I say no.
He says 'that dog thinks it was his car in his previous life as a man, so he wants it back, that is why he is barking at you'...

What about this life?

A Reddit post claims: "Dutch here. We don't approve this list, but hey what can you do about it. It's mostly 50 y/o men jerking off to their nostalgic youth songs. At my school, no one really bats an eye." I'm over 50, and mostly approve the list, and some show remarkable memory IMHO.

Hi PRR,
That seems to be the direction the "TOP 2000" is heading. Originally, the organizing radio station was basically a golden oldies station, but then they wanted to attract a younger demographic to increase their listenership.
The result was that they transformed from a clearly recognizable formula with a solid fanbase to a wandering concept chasing the teens and alienating their long time listeners.
A lot could be sad about the demise of the "Top 2000" and the desperate desire of some "brands" to "stay young" even if it destroys their identity and legacy. But this thread is about lightening the mood, so I will not get into that matter any deeper.
Most of the permanent (non-mobile) homes in those areas are up on stilts for a reason. 10-15 feet of water happen frequently enough where you couldn’t buy flood insurance at any price. Take the truck and the boat, drive to higher ground. Come back home by boat till the waters recede.

Can I book one of those home on Airbnb?
No problem. You just gotta find the right neighborhood. Can I book one of those home on Airbnb?

I´d say Redneck Engineers are very good 🙂
Stone or concrete pillars may be more durable...
And it might topple in strong winds, looks top heavy.

Theres really no choice in the matter, code dictates that (within the coastal zone, 5,000’ from mean high tide line) if you want to put up any inhabitable structure the first floor level must be so many feet above the FEMA base flood elevation maps (at least in FL but pretty sure its a federal thing) how much is based on your zone (VE,AE,X) .
When building our house the BFE is AE-8.6‘ plus 2’ for code……so first floor is 10’6” up. This has to be certified by a licensed surveyor before you get your certificate of occupancy.
It may look top heavy/delicate but a few yrs ago our house went through a direct hit from a cat 5 hurricane (Michael) with just the gutters tore off, no other damage at all.
In accord with thread title, our mood was definitely lightened by the fact it weathered the storm…….but I way overbuilt minimum code so it really was no surprise. 😎
