Some speaker driver measurements...

By age 50 the average hearing is 40db down by 5khz.

What it shows us is it’s more important to focus on the best results in the range that we hear best. What it doesn’t show us is most instruments as well as the human voice is in the most sensitive area of human hearing as well. So ideally if we can get away with not crossing over in the sensitive range, it’s ideal. And this Bliesma mid allows us to do so without real world compromises.

Yes it’s an amazing driver. And it’s going to be my go to driver in high end immersive sound theatre installs. Hoping it can handle 117db/1m with a 4th order at 600hz. This will allow for the Atmos standard of 105dB at the listening position up to 4m from the front mains.

Only problem with 4” cone drivers is limited SPL capability.
I am waiting on the Purifi 4" M. I like smaller midranges, they are easier to incorporate with with the tweeter, with and without acoustic lens. Due to the smaller size, they usually have better distortion figures and lower stored energy.
This is immensely beneficial to retain clean performance form say 500 Hz and up. Downside is as you say, max SPL. But very few need more than 100dB in their living room, so I think we are good 😉

I make speakers for large rooms. So a speaker that can only do 100dB @ 1m can only do 88dB at 4m. So wouldn’t cut it for my applications. Especially Atmos theatres where 105dB continuous is needed at the listening position.

Yes!
Also something a lot of people seem to completely forget.

It's like amplifiers basically.
Like a 15W amplifier that has an amazing performance.

All great, but that also means there is only a limited dynamic range you can get out of it. Or maximum SPL practically speaking.
(in fact, physical xmax can basically be seen as the voltage rails of an amplifier)

With speakers there is even a double penalty, since a bigger speaker will perform often better because it needs a whole lot less excursion.
And less excursion automatically means less distortion.

So in other words a 4 inch Purifi is nice and all, but only in a few very specific niches. Were anything slightly bigger won't fit anymore.

I loved the idea of the 4” Purifi woofer. But it maxes out at 102dB from 1m away. Great for use in a camper or motor home. I’d use it there.
