Never started smoking because Mom used to choke us out of the car with her cigarettes. She finally quit in her 40’s after repeated bouts with pneumonia. But it wrecked her lungs permanently by then, and she continued to live a very poor quality of life for the next 25 years. No cancer, ever, but no O2, either.
I doubt I would have survived if I ever started. My lungs have always been the weak point, even when I was in the best shape of my life 10 years ago. I never could oxygenate well enough to tolerate very high peak power (sustained at just under 300W was fine) so I was never going to win any bike races and cat up. No amount of training in the world would fix it - just a fundamental limitation. The buddies I used to train with could never figure it out either. I’m just going to fall off on climbs or be at the back in a sprint, but a 4:15 Hotter ‘N Hell was par for the course. Breathing like a steam locomotive the whole time - one of my nicknames out there was “Locomotive Breath”. If I‘d been smoking I probably would have collapsed on the road somewhere, and anything over 100 watts probably wouldn’t have even been do-able.

Excuse me while I place some carcinogenic materials in my paper thin lungs for my personal fulfillment!
Snuff is also dangerous, read about what it does to the sinuses if used in excess.
The problem with this type of threads is that the reports get so depressing that smokers reading them feel like there's no tomorrow anyway 🙂
This happens when there's some aerosol in the environment. See all that what happened in the last 3 years. The problem with this type of threads is that the reports get so depressing that smokers reading them feel like there's no tomorrow anyway 🙂
But also other threads regarding people and aerosol:
Don't use MDF: it makes fine powder
I want to build my spekers with PVC....NO! PVC is toxic...
Wanna put foil leads inside/outside ? DON'T! Dangerous carcinogenic!
Grinder? Niet!!
Soldering iron ? Beware of the aerosol from the thinner inside!!
Ehm...cigarette?
R U crazy ??!
I can't imagine how foolish I was, buying those cigarette.
And then smoking them with deep breathes.
I say - Never again!!! 😎

I believe that smoking is mostly a socially driven habit. When I was a boy, many decades ago, everyone smoked everywhere. So I had to be different and I never ever smoked, not even a try. That's funny because now I'm in the majority. How times change.
I refer you to post #32. 🙂It says a lot about the power of addictions that people continue to smoke through the hole in their throat where their larynx used to be.
Tom
Welcome to the club. 🙂 It's pretty common in older men. My Urologist is a busy guy.I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. It is probably not related to any particular lifestyle of mine. Just happens I guess.
I had mine sugically removed a few years ago, because it was basically a tumor.

Yea, in 1965 when I was just 7 years old the social trend among my peers was to go to Loblaws, walk through the check out where at that time the cigarettes were openly displayed where now they have the candy and magazines, steal a pack and meet up at the designated hang out to smoke them.I believe that smoking is mostly a socially driven habit. Those were different times
btw, unlike Bill, I really did not inhale at that age. 🙂

I'm 66 never smoked. Social life was hell. The dates I never tried to get because the girl smoked...
It was pervasive and there was the presumption someone could light up in your home and not ask. Same in non smoking compartments in trains. A night out meant a change of clothes. Always showered before bed to get the stink off.
"A non smoking section in restaurant is like a no urinating section in a swimming pool."
I feel like this isn't discussed enough among people. I'm sure we've all seen materials intended to make people aware that smoke detectors are needed in the home, but I'm not sure I've seen anything similar about getting radon levels checked. Around here, it's only ever discussed when trying to sell a house. You may already be aware of this but I'll mention it. Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer. It's everywhere in more or less concentrations in the ground caused by the decomposition of uranium. It emanates up through the ground right through your concrete floor. The danger is when it concentrates in your basement. Your next door neighbour may have zero while yours could be dangerous. The Gov. hands out test kits free of charge. It's a charcoal cannister you just put on your basement floor for a few months and then send it back for testing.
Or in your car even. Hey, they had the ashtray and cigarette lighter as standard. Here the turning point has been about 20 years ago. Due to strange events, the most recognized and respected cancer doctor of the country became health minister. It leveraged its mass-media notoriety to push the message that smoking in public places is uncool. After a few years, a total smoking ban on all public places became law. That was basically unenforceable, but surprisingly people immediately embraced it. That day it was almost like the stink switch was turned off. I could finally go to a restaurant and smell the food, or keep the window closed at the office. It was pervasive and there was the presumption someone could light up in your home and not ask
Oh how the world used to stink! Smokers didn’t care and the rest of us just had to get used to it. 😡 Cigarette butts everywhere.
Paris in the winter was hell for non-smokers. All doors and windows closed and 95% of the population puffing away like mad in cafes, restaurants and clubs. Every concert was a cacophony of coughs from all the people with smokers lung. The smell would penetrate thru layers of clothing and underwear all the way to the skin.

I loved smoking back in the day; cigarettes (rollem's and tailor made), cigars, pipes... But I always knew it was an unhealthy and expensive waste. Prices (taxes) kept going up, quality kept going down, until it got easy to quit.
I met a man who grew up in tobacco country in the south-east US, who claimed (falsely) that "When I was a kid everyone smoked, and nobody got cancer." He believed that the problem is the chemicals sprayed on the plants. When he was young, school children got time off to go pick worms off tobacco leaves. Now they are sprayed with pesticides. He may have a point.

Indeed most smokers smokers got to a point where they'd express pure hate against those who'd tell they need fresh or at least breathable air indoors.I was 6 years old when I told my parents to stop smoking inside closed doors. Then they moved to the kitchen, but the smoke was so thick it eventually got everywhere in the house...I remember having kind of an asthma triggering event every time in the morning when after the doors got open after a full hour of my parents smoking and I woke up with a sudden pain in my chest.I didn't feel like suffocating, but very close...Every single morning with my parents for 2 decades was like that...same waking up with a pain in my chest made me go straight to the windows to open them and get some damn air.It could be -30degrees celsius outside I wouldn't care I needed air to breathe.I barely know any smoker who come to my house and doesn't express the need to smoke inside my house.I never refuse them for 1 or 2 cigarettes, but show them the door for a third.
In the UK when you sell a house you have to make a declaration about radon. IIRC it's more of a problem in areas where there's granite, but very variable.I feel like this isn't discussed enough among people. I'm sure we've all seen materials intended to make people aware that smoke detectors are needed in the home, but I'm not sure I've seen anything similar about getting radon levels checked. If you're spending a lot of time in a basement/cellar you'd be wise to get it tested. In the UK you can order detection kits for around £60 and get an analysis.
If you have problems with radon imagine all the eastern europeans living in huge blocks of concrete all of their lives...As long as you open the windows regularly there's no real problem Radon is a gas.It dilutes and gets out when changing the air inside.People got into their 90's and even hit 100 years old in those blocks if they had a balanced life style.
Analysis of the tar says otherwise. It's a carcinogen soup.He believed that the problem is the chemicals sprayed on the plants
The link was being discussed long before pesticides were pervasive.
Also, people had harder, shorter lives and more opportunities to die of other stuff that we currently cure with antibiotics before cancer could be an issue...
I hated cigarettes when I was a kid. My dad smoked in the car with us kids in the back seat. He smoked in the house. My mother didn't smoke. People smoked everywhere. People chain smoked at work.
The prohibition on indoor smoking was long overdue. I always thought smoking belonged outside.

- Smoking. Do you smoke? Why and what do you smoke? Why not?
