Slewmaster - CFA vs. VFA "Rumble"

I have sent a email to the seller asking for a full refund. I will reserve sending a feedback until I hear from them. Ebay advertizes money back so hopefully between the two I will get satisfaction. I just wanted to warn folks that these will not handle the power they advertize. May be OK for lower voltage needs. No good for my needs.

Thought I would share my experience this morning. I ordered a couple PSU units from ebay so I could make two identical power supplies for the A/B Slewmaster setup I trying to put together.
4 10000uF 100V High End Power Amplifier Board | eBay
Received them yesterday so I hooked them up one at a time to test them. I hooked them using my light bulb tester just in case. On one of the units the light continued to burn dimly so I felt the caps and one of them was warm. I figured it may need to be reformed so I hooked up a separate bridge and used a 27K resistor and let it charge over night. This morning, I checked it again and the resistor was still discharging about 6V. I tried hooking up the PSU normally and the cap still got warm so I shut it down and discharged it. Then I hooked up the second unit and turned it on. I kept feeling the caps and they were all cool so I decided to let it run for a while and see how it did. Well after about 5 or 10 minutes one of the caps exploded. Fortunately I was a few feet away. I hate to think what might have happened if I was standing right there staring at it. I am attaching some pics for your enjoyment.

Those look to be EXACTLY the same size as my 4 REAL (nippon/united chemcon)
4700uf @ 80 V capacitors. I've used these for 5 years @ 60-70V.

I saw those (your caps) all over alibaba/ebay.
From reliable sources 10k@ 100v is much bigger. With thinner aluminum
and paste layer , smaller caps can't handle 100v !

When I buy a cheap kit from ebay , I stuff it with mouser parts after
reviewing the circuit/layout (use just the PCB) 😡 ....

Glad you didn't get hurt 😱 /

United chemicom 105C 100v/10kuf caps are really mostly 40-50mm diameter
(would not even fit that PCB).
The one that IS 35mm is 5.25" -130mm tall ! (only an 85C).

FAKE !!!

look up product line on digikey ...

Here is a close up of the caps. These are 1-3/8 X 2-1/2"

I have bought parts from ebay before, caps included and they've always turned out fine. This was some time ago mind you and things have definitely changed since the 'good old days' of when ebay wasn't what it is now.

I think in general, if you're getting something that isn't from China, you tend to be okay, at least that's my experience, but that isn't a complete guarantee.

What amazes me though is that those dodgy caps could have cost you an eye or something. How whoever can actually think it's a good idea to sell that stuff I don't know. Then again China is selling LED bulbs without isolation that give you a mains electricity shock if you touch them in the wrong place...

I'm just glad you're alright Terry, I know how dangerous and frightening an exploding cap can sometimes be.

The "KMH" (105C) product line just goes to 35mm X 58mm (2.25") for
100v/4700uF. Then goes to 40mm for >5600uf....

They actually do make a "smh" 100v@ 10kuf that is 35 X 65mm.
Your vendor most likely took some 80-100v "rejects" and re-wrapped them ,
But even a non-reject SMH rated at 100v would not explode !!

They just don't make a (present stock or catalog) "KMH" with that value/voltage/size. 😕
PS - you even have a second one that is "warping" .... not just a random defect !!

United chemi-con / panasonic electro's ARE made in China.

But..... the parent companies outsource to them. If the components are
not made to spec , they will "fire" that chinese supplier.

I fear the "rejects" from these suppliers are finding their way into
the ebay kits . (preying on hobbyists) 😡
Hopefully they will all use the "crock pot " blast shield method. 😀

Personally I do my best to avoid such issues by purchasing from main stream suppliers like Digi-Key or Mouser. Do I pay more for the privilege? Almost certainly. Do I have many issues with suspect parts? Nope. That said, some things from discount suppliers have been fine, such as enclosures and other hardware, but I am very leery of electronic components.

Well it's night time in China so I probably won't hear back from them until tomorrow. I knew at the price point that I was taking a chance. Just glad I had walked away before it popped and I wasn't still standing there with my hand on the caps. They probably get by selling these because most folks aren't running 80V rails. These probably work fine and 50V.

According to their add I will have to return them to them for a refund so I'll have to fork out money for shipping. Lesson learned. I mainly posted here about this so other could benefit from my experience.

I have another one maybe that one also a fake.
I measured them like the pict 🙂

Me too, and you can be sure if it came out of a name brand amplifier it won't be a fake. So long as the capacitance, leakage and ESR are within spec (after reforming if needed) you are good to go with used parts, especially if you are just trying something before splashing out cash on new parts for a long term build.

It been a long time since I disassembled any amps that had big filter caps. I probably would have been leery of those anyway. I knew I was taking a chance on these. For the price I didn't expect them to be top notch caps but I did expect them to manage the voltage they were rated at. Sorry I derailed the thread. I just wanted to warn folks about these caps. I'm a little bummed about it to be honest. I liked the whole idea of these little units. I thought they would make nice little supplies for my dual amp setup.

John Bali,

The cap popped at 88Vdc. The first unit had a cap heat up at 77Vdc with a light bulb in the circuit. I can't say what voltage would be safe. Three of the caps on each unit seemed OK but I can't say if they would have lasted either. The one that exploded didn't show any signs of trouble until I walked away from it.

Blessings, Terry

EDIT; I just received this from the ebay seller.
