Finally kicked myself last night and took these downstairs to finish. I picked out my color: Stealth Jet in Eggshell and will go pick up the paint tomorrow morning. Hopefully I can get them done this weekend but don't want to rush so it may not be till early next week. I'll post pics during the progress but here they are taken apart and showing the "extra bracing" I did.

If you haven't painted them yet, and are going the latex route, consider using a product called Floetrol to "thin" the paint (doesn't actually thin the paint, but I don't know of a good word for what it does). I've painted a bunch of MDF with latex+Floetrol last year, and it provided a superior finish when rolling, and even more so when brushing. Brush strokes are easier to hide with it, and rolling tends to be more even. It also keeps increases the open time of the paint, so you can take a bit longer painting.
Oh interesting I'll look it up. I'm actually taking a vacation day today and painting so this is perfect timing if I can find it local. I decided on Behr Dark Granite. I got a sample can and the finish is flat (I'm going to do egg shell) but it looks pretty good so far. Almost time to go get the big can and go to town!

I seem to remember seeing it at Home Depot, although I picked it up at a local paint store instead. Not overly expensive, but I found it helped.
edit: sure enough HD carries it - http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc...P_PARENT_ID&storeId=10051&Ntpr=1&ddkey=Search

While I've used Floetrol in the past (which is available at both Home Depot and Lowe's) I've found that I actually prefer the product from Wagner instead. It seems to live up a bit better to its promises. The Wagner product is in a white container with a blue and yellow label. It is designed for the same purposes as Floetrol. The Wagner product is carried by Lowe's as well as Walmart. HD doens't carry the Wagner product, as far as I know. The price is about $8.00 per quart.
I used to do a lot of painting when I had to feed my family - that's how I figured out how to get my hands on the right products. There's also another product buy Duron / Sherwin Williams that's designed to cut down on brush marks and maintain a "wet edge" when painting longer. This chemical is purple-ish in color. I didn't have good luck with it at all. In fact, I returned it to Duron for a refund because the Wagner was much better.
Well I picked up the stuff at HD and did the first coat on the backs and it worked great. Gonna go grab some pizza for dinner then go back downstairs and coat the whole cabinet. Gettin excited to finally have these things done!
Thanks 🙂 Pics were taken with my iPhone so not all that great with the less than optimal light. Once they're done I'll take some more with my Canon. We're getting close!!
Glad to hear that Floetrol worked out for you. I've never heard of the Wagner product, but I'll try it next time I need to paint.
The floetrol definitely worked. I did one cabinet with and one without and the one I did with it went on much better and smoother. Thank you for the tip!
Going to do one last sanding and coat today and finish the grills. I started them last night then ran out of hot glue so I need to go run to the store and get more. Wil post pics soon!
They're done now ... almost! Had to lay them on their backs and paint the bottoms (had forgotten about those parts. oops!) and just got that done. I'm gonna let that dry overnight then apply another coat and let them sit for about a week. I can't bring them inside and its fairly cold in the garage so I want to give them plenty of time for the paint to cure. Even after a week it may not be enough time but we'll see. I'm doing the finishing touches on the grills tonight with the wife (its a bonding time for us 😀) then as soon as they're all dry I'll finally be done! I really like the color and once I get them all set up I'll get out my good DSLR and take some decent pics (no more iPhone pics!). This has definitely been a bit of a journey and I'm excited for it to be done so I can move onto the next project (Woden Double Mouth BLH maybe for the 12's??).

The dilemma now of course will be total curing of the paint in cold garage - make try to get a small heater / fan on them for a few hours at a time over the next couple of days - say during the (with any luck, multiple) bonding time(s) - . The last thing you want to do is ruin the paint job by moving them a day too early - BTDT.
.
I completely agree Chris. I need to go pick up a heater to help the process. My wife wanted to make sure I didn't move them too early too as I tend to get excited and want to set my stuff up and don't give it proper time 🙂 We're leaving for 4 days at Christmas so I'm planning on being them inside then but keeping them on their stands so they're not in contact with the carpet. I think by Monday or Tuesday of next week they should be good.

If you're wiFe reads this "My wide wanted to make sure" - in the words of Ricky Ricardo - you got some splaining to do.

Did I write that? It shows "wife" in my post 😕 If I did write that and she read it she'd probably laugh at my bad typing skills 😀
Now I'm confused because I used copy and paste for the quote. Someone may be looking out for you. Sounds like your wife is a keeper.
One of the janitor jobs of the mods. Fixing an agregious typo (usually amounts to fixing broken quotes and bad URLs) is within the pervue...
I thot sketter's wife would appreciate the typo fix... now its a whole subthread on its own😀

Oh that's too funny! Well thank you Dave for fixing my mistype. I'm sure I can somehow blame my iPhone for the mistake 🙂 lol! If my wife read the forum she would appreciate it so thank you!
