No K71,FT-3, use C0G or 5mm MKP. Its for decoupling the incoming wires esl. Those are the best.
Hello Salas
I need an advice from you. At first I like to buy the 2SK170 for matching. Should I buy the BL or V version ? I'm using the EMT TSD15 with the specification which I found:
the load should be 150 - 200 Ohm and output is 0,15mV. So I think I need about 60dB.
Thanks Kurt
PS: I did not found the answers in your excellent thread.

Hello
Maybe 0.21mV? EMT TSD 15
Interesting thread about loading it http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/analogue-source/63086-tsd-15-optimum-loading.html
There is only one Simplistic made with V grade 15mA IDSS, actually by a fellow countryman and hobbyist of yours. Franz, maybe you know him?
You can try make that circuit I suppose. http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/analogue-source/129126-simplistic-njfet-riaa-384.html
Maybe Franz can tell you more about practical stuff like how he laid it out since he has very sensitive speakers and got no hum as he reported.

Salas,
They were 200B K72.
For the record a 100nF decoupling cap is a requirement in this confuguration. I wish I did a distortion plot vs. frequency before to compare. I will do it at some point.
The speakers have completely dissappeared and the soundstage blew open to put it mildly. High frequency high energy like cymbals have taken on a very real presentation.

What did you use? 5mm PP? Quite long common cables till the regs now, should have been blending with enough inductance, even bringing RF inside. How long, 1m+? I use 0.1uF there too but with just up to 10cm twisted pair from the filter caps, nothing really changed.

I only had 100nF MKT's. So I used an Axial PP from Cornell Dubier. I am using a 1M XLR for power feed. 20 awg wire.
Small size mainly matters. Also 10n from RCA input ground rings locally to chassis clean up some muck if riding on the TT cable shield before it enters the circuit's input ground point. Audibly so in some cases. Adding more depth.

Kurt could test my preamp in his home.
Thats why he wants to build one 🙂

Nice, he has sure chance of debugging success since he knows you then.

Hmm...
He will not need it, as he was working a long time for the swiss distributor of Quad. I think, he repaired a lot of the Quad devices.
Franz
You Studer, him Quad, you are an all star team then, no worries. His cart is near an Ortofon SPU tone? Also did he have enough preamp gain in his house if he copies your's with his EMT?
Salas
Thanks for your information.
1. I get my EMT TSD15 specification from this (bad) copy of "EMT Technische Information" Pegel bei 1kHz (Spitzenschnelle = 1cm/s) = 0,15mV +/- 2dB : http://www.stefanopasini.it/EMT_TSD_15_Brochure-0.htm
2. So, then I will buy the V version
3. Yes I know Franz
Regards
Kurt

Hello Kurt
Since you have tested Franz's in your set up and its OK for gain and SQ, I would recommend you make exactly the same. I.e. with 15mA V, only difference is with 220R input load. Seems people who know recommend that load for your EMT.

Thanks for your information, but it will take some time, because I'm a very slow DIY.
Now I have to wait at first to get the 2SK170V.

Thanks for the words S Gregory.
Well, the Hamond is the first choque in a triple PI configuration for the WE417 B+ voltage, the others are 6! Lundahl choques that are positioned on the top of the chassis for extra filtering both 300B voltage and WE417.
The rest of the iron is Hashimoto interstages and outputs, in conjuction with Emission Labs valves, it sounds wonderfull on OB speakers using Lowther PM2 and Tone Tuby Bass.
Good luck with your projects.
cheers.

GR's or BL's ?
Hello Salas,
I have mixed news but I still want to jump in with both feet. Today I received 250 2SK170GR’s from Bangkok Thailand. I thought that they were going to be BL’s. They are not.
This journey is about learning to use JFET’s and measurement software. I hope the GR’s will work. I thought I would ask before I start to sort by current.
My cart is a Ortofon OMB 10. My present RIAA preamplifier has about 40db of gain it feeds into a buffer line stage followed by a stepped attenuator and followed by 6BQ6GTB tubes with 5000 : 300 output transformers. This plays into Sennheiser HD600’s headphones. There is about 20db of headroom on the attenuator at a comfort listening level.
Should I keep shopping for BL’s? Or look for highish pairs from the GR’s?
Thanks
DT
All just for fun!
Hi DT, what's up? That PDF you got its good but a bit long in the tooth for some better tunings. When you will have some enough Jfets and having noted down your pairs, you will tell me about those, and about the cart to use, plus system gain and I will give you best values circuits. Its not easy to make a low noise high gain circuit perfect on first shot, but all made it in the end. Its SE no loop feedback and has its precision care demands also.

Dual Tiode try www dot bdent dot com. I think the have some BL's. Mouser should be instock soon as well.

If they are genuine items we can design for GR when not looking for top gain and MM lends for that. Try your hand on this one. Use an LM317 reg firstly just to see if the FETs behave as expected for gain & low noise. The 100k input load trimmer connected as a rheostat will let you calibrate tone, since the omnipresent 47k load for MM is a myth.
