But interested in what?
What are you contributing if you are not directly involved?
The onlookers appear to be wanting to dictate what they want and when they want to read it while we are doing all the work.
That is hardly the reality and I find these behaviours stiffling of any enjoyment when we are just trying to sort of the finer points of this new design per the designers original intent.
There appear no such issues in the Passlabs Forums because there aren't the same politics at work.
Unfortunately these pages are an inappropriate medium for the sort of exchange we need at this stage.
I mean I would prefer to talk about it on the phone with the others and that is precisely what I intend to do if they are interested.(email if you are)
I don't propose to discuss the SKA any further publicly. There just isn't the necessity as this whole thing pretty cut and dried all said and done.
My next project is the Zen 9 which is more in the spirit of real diy audio!

Macka, when a design claims as much as this, it seems quite reasonable to me to ask why. Lots of people like this amp, and personally, I'm interested in correlating listening impressions with what we can measure. If you want to stop contributing, then that's fine, I can't make you, but if the amp is as good as you say, then this evasiveness doesn't give a very good impression. As for the difference in this thread to the Pass Labs ones, I don't think that Nelson has ever made claims like Greg has about any of his projects, he just posts designs and lets others make up their own minds.
bat and ball!
Macka,
You are oversensitive! There are no politics at work here!
I make no demands!!
My approach is different to yours. My experience with caps tells me they can take WAY long to sound right.
I doubt you know the sound of the basic amp before rushing to "improve" it!!
BTW YOU are NOT the only person doing work.
Cheers,

Experienced people improve sound by changing of connection, less experienced try it with changing of caps etc.... 😉

Let me just set the story straight Pink,
Your post is irrelvent and belongs on the analysis thread. Aside from that you have twisted what I was saying and your post flirts the desire for controversy.
The problem is your are ineffective, your not in control and you don't contribute.
Who's being evasive? The facts are I've built it , I have posted here and elsewhere my impressions and I have popularised the amp by all accounts and I have voiced the amp to my liking.
If others want to share they can email me for a one on one chat as I have done already with a number of members.
I have other challenging projects to look at and its time to move on.
Pick over the bones if you must.....that seems to be driving the sales more than anything else!

Its not about being evasive, if it looks like that then fine the amp is a peice of junk but I'm just getting sick and tired of narrow minded halfwits like Upopa, Eva and the rest taking cheap shots from the sidelines. They contribute little, demand much and insult the spirit of DIY. They claim that the topics they are discussing are useful but just who are they useful to? I haven't learned anything from these folks or their discussions apart from that they only come here to help themselves and feel good about it at the same time. You can blanket it up anyway you like but that's the way its looked for me during my few posts in Solidstate.
I for one am sick and tired of this and all I want to do is just share experiences and practical knowledge of the amp, its sound and improvements. I'm going to be moving to one of the other forums to discuss the SKA. DIYA or should I say a few of its members are lame.
Macka, I'll email you.
Macka, I'll put aside your other comments, as believe it or not, the last thing I want to do is get into an argument with you, (or Tony for that matter).
If you have improvements, why not post them here, it's for the good of everyone. A year or so down the line, you may be no longer available for email for any number of reasons. If your findings are posted here, then it gives the chance for late comers to implement them if they wish. Does that make sense?

To be fair to Al, he does do his job well virtually all the time. Sometimes too well actually 😉
He's a decent bloke who's helped me out with many suggestions in the past and I've got respect for him. I don't however skirt around an issue that I feel strongly about either out of this respect and I'd fully expect Al to do the same.
Sometimes I have to Tony! 🙂 Being a mod is actually very restrictive.
But anyway, if I had the money spare, I would quite possibly buy one of Greg's kits, as I am very impressed by the listening opinions I have read here. However, I suspect I might just have to wait until Tony has got his system fully up and running, then take some beers round and listen to his! 😉

Macka,
I dont see my comment as unreasonable.
I'm happy to hear about mods.
But so far on a Listening Impressions thread we have over 460 posts and only about half a dozen of these are Listening Impressions.
This is about 1.3%!!!! Does this not justify some query?
There is also a Construction thread which you also contribute to. Why not post your mods there?
In fact I'm quite happy for mods posts to stay here. I just encourage others to post listening impressions as soon as they are ready.
BTW: A spectrum analysis of the Aleph X similar to that of the GB may be very revealing! Since you like this amp and want to "voice" the GB, I doubt you will emulate the transfer function with cap changes but may, I suspect, by raising H2!
cheers,

Al, I won't have my system up and running for a good couple of months and I simply have no use for all but two of the GB150's.
I can box the other 2 x GB300 and 2 x GB150 up and a couple of traffo's then you can have a play if you'd like. I'll pay postage to you and you just pay postage back to me in couple of months time or when your done. You could then offer an opinion that carries more weight - be it good or bad.
I'll email you and discuss it.
What good is posting mods to anyone if we have no basis of understanding?
We need a diverse body of opinion of the basic amp sound and then a re- comparison after each mod. Hopefully more than ONE opinion of any mod as everyone's baby is beautiful and change often mistaken for improvement!
I mean things like quoting singers and instuments on specific tracks.
"after the BG's ran in I noticed Ella's voice on .. sounded more breathy and closer to the mic. Height seemed to increase also" or somesuch.
" after I DC coupled the feedback, with Miles on ... Tony William's kick drum had more punch and laid a better foundation '" etc
I see this a preferable to , Hi-Fi comments, like "bass was more detailed, tighter and more extended" .
It is the difference between benefits and features. Features talk about improvements in sound and it is more difficult to relate if they are what you are looking for.
Benefits talk about improvements in the reproductiion of music and quote specific examples as evidence that can be repeated by others and so can become less subjective!
Am I crazy or is this not what this thread should be about?? How much time are GB owners spending listening to their favourite music?? They are sure keeping it to themselves!!
cheers

Hi macka,
I am somewhat puzzled by your response. If anything, I have been supportive to this project and the people involved. I wish I could afford to buy a kit, but I can not.
I would like this to be a source of information to members here. This is what you propose to take away. If you feel that way, by all means, do not post. I think pinkmouse put it in a nutshell quite well.
BTW, lumanauw good work. I am looking forward to hear your impressions.

Al, I've sent you an email regarding this. Let me know if you fancy trying them out.
Got your mail Ant, and I'm certainly interested. I'll drop you a line later to sort out the details, but I'm at work at the moment so can't spend too much time online.
Richie, if Anthony's up for it, maybe if I try them for a month, then send them on to you? 😉

No problems Al, Rich is well known to me and I trust him, so if you want to send them onto him afterwards that's OK by me. Like I said in my email I'm not going to be sending the GB300's out but will send a pair of GB150 in dual mono config. I'll be including 2 x GB150's, 2 x BMM CRC PSU's, 2 x 35v 300VA toroids and all the wiring as well as the instructions for setting up and wiring diagrams. Basically all you need to get them up and running is a couple of 0.6c/w or greater heatsinks.
I think this could be a great idea since it will at least allow for a couple more opinions and maybe Al could run a couple of measurements for those that are interested in that sort of thing.
Rich, if your interested give me an email and we can work something about between the three of us.

ShinOBIWAN,
Exactly, you summed it up or should I say them perfectly.
I irony is Hugh Dean is the only one who to my mind has contributed to the discussion outside those who have built it.
But Hugh's in a different league.
I look forward to chatting with you elsewhere.

Hifryer, you told me that you'd bought a pair of GB300's in email conversations?
What's going on? Surely you'd be more interested in getting them up and running rather than waiting around for more opinions to roll in 🙂
Kinda like having a Aston Martin DB7 on the drive and then hanging out in the car forums waiting for opinions from fellow owners. Bizarre to say the least or am I missing something?
